Amused

Chapter 8: The Betrayal Behind the Help

*Madison, don’t trust the person who told you about the letter.*

I stared at Ethan’s message until the words stopped looking like words.

My husband.

The man who abandoned me that morning.

The man who told me to call an Uber if labor started.

The man who had spent weeks hiding things from me.

Was warning me.

I should have ignored it.

I wanted to ignore it.

But there was one problem.

Ethan knew about the letter.

He knew about things nobody should have known.

I looked up at Robert.

“Ethan says not to trust the person who told me about the letter.””

Robert’s face changed.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

A small flicker.

Recognition.

“You know something.””

“No.””

“You do.””

“Madison—”

“Don’t.””

My voice became quiet.

“That’s exactly what everyone does.””

Robert looked away.

“You hesitate.””

He didn’t answer.

“Then you tell me I’m wrong.””

Still nothing.

“Then you protect someone.””

I held up my phone.

“Who is it?””

Robert’s jaw tightened.

“I don’t know.””

I almost laughed.

“Again.””

“Madison.””

“Again.””

He lowered his eyes.

And that was the moment I knew.

Everyone had secrets.

But not everyone had the same reason for keeping them.

Some were afraid.

Some were guilty.

And some were waiting for the right moment to use what they knew.

“I need to call Ethan.””

Robert looked at me.

“Be careful.””

“Why?””

“Because if Ethan is warning you, there’s a reason.””

I stared at him.

“You mean the man who left me?””

“Yes.””

“The man who lied to me?””

“Yes.””

“The man who planned custody behind my back?””

“Yes.””

“Then why should I listen to him?””

Robert didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

The truth was complicated.

Ethan had hurt me.

But that didn’t mean every warning he gave was a lie.

I pressed call.

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then voicemail.

I hung up.

Immediately, another message arrived.

Not from Ethan.

From Claire.

*Madison, please answer. I need to explain.*

My stomach tightened.

I looked at the message.

Then at Robert.

“Claire.””

His expression changed.

“What about her?””

“She’s the one who told me about the letter.””

Robert went completely still.

“Madison.””

“What?””

“Where is she now?””

“I don’t know.””

“Call her.””

I did.

She answered after one ring.

“Madison.””

Her voice sounded panicked.

“Where are you?””

“At home.””

“Are you alone?””

The question bothered me.

“Why?””

“Because I need to tell you something.””

“Then tell me.””

She was quiet.

“Madison, I shouldn’t have shown you the letter.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What?””

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

“Yes.””

“You told me Ethan was hiding things.””

“He was.””

“You told me about the apartment.””

“It’s true.””

“You told me about the paternity documents.””

“Yes.””

“Then why are you saying you shouldn’t have shown me the letter?””

Claire took a shaky breath.

“Because it wasn’t supposed to be found yet.””

The words made my chest tighten.

“Yet?””

“Madison…”

“No.””

I walked away from Robert.

“Explain.””

“I was trying to protect Ethan.””

I stopped.

There it was.

The sentence everyone used.

Protect.

“I’m tired of hearing that word.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice broke.

“You all keep saying you’re protecting someone while destroying someone else.””

“I know.””

“Did Ethan send you?””

“No.””

“Did Denise?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

Claire went quiet.

Finally:

“Because I was the one who gave Ethan the idea to leave.””

The room went cold.

“What?””

“Madison, listen—”

“No.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You?””

“I thought I was helping him.””

“Helping him abandon his pregnant wife?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Claire’s voice cracked.

“I thought he was going to tell you.””

“When?””

“After he got back.””

“From Scottsdale?””

“Yes.””

“With Olivia?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“Then who?””

Silence.

“Claire.””

“Madison…”

“Who was he going with?””

Another pause.

Then:

“He wasn’t going for Olivia.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then why was she involved?””

“She was helping him.””

“Helping him do what?””

Claire didn’t answer.

And I already knew.

“Find his biological father?””

“Yes.””

The room went quiet.

So much of what I believed was wrong.

The affair.

The trip.

The betrayal.

Maybe the story was different.

But the pain remained.

“He lied to me.””

“Yes.””

“He left me.””

“Yes.””

“He still chose to do it.””

“Yes.””

Claire didn’t defend him.

That mattered.

“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?””

“Because Ethan made me promise.””

“Why would you promise?””

“Because he was scared.””

I looked at the letter.

At the words he had written.

The words I was never supposed to see.

“Scared of what?””

Claire whispered:

“His biological father.””

I closed my eyes.

Again.

Always the same answer.

Fear.

“But Ethan is not the only person hiding something.””

My eyes opened.

“What?””

Claire took a breath.

“Madison, the letter wasn’t written by Ethan.””

I froze.

“What?””

“It was copied.””

My heartbeat increased.

“Copied from what?””

“I don’t know.””

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

“Then how did you know about it?””

Silence.

A terrible silence.

And suddenly I understood.

“You saw it before.””

Claire didn’t answer.

“Claire.””

“I found it.””

“When?””

“Before Ethan did.””

My stomach dropped.

“You found Ethan’s letter before Ethan?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell him?””

“I didn’t know what it meant.””

“But you knew enough to show me.””

“I thought I could fix things.””

“By giving me half the truth?””

“Madison—”

“No.””

I looked at Robert.

He was watching me carefully.

Everyone was connected.

Everyone had touched this secret.

Everyone except me.

“Claire, where are you?””

“At home.””

“Are you alone?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

“Claire.””

“I’m not alone.””

“With who?””

Silence.

Then:

“Ethan.””

My breath stopped.

“What?””

“He came here.””

“When?””

“You said he was missing.””

“I didn’t know where he went after he left.””

“And now?””

“Now he’s here.””

“Why?””

Claire’s voice dropped.

“Because he knows who has the documents.””

I looked at Robert.

“Who?””

Claire whispered:

“He thinks it’s Denise.””

The name hit me.

Ethan’s mother.

The woman who warned me.

The woman who said she hid the letter.

The woman who told me to leave.

“No.””

“Madison—”

“Denise wouldn’t.””

“Wouldn’t what?””

“Hide something from Ethan?””

Claire was quiet.

That answer hurt.

Because deep down, I knew.

Denise had hidden things.

Everyone had.

“Where is Ethan now?””

“He’s leaving.””

“Put him on.””

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because he doesn’t know I called you.””

I stared at the phone.

“You’re still protecting him.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Claire’s voice broke.

“Because despite everything, he’s trying to stop something worse from happening.””

I wanted to be angry.

I was angry.

But beneath that anger was something else.

A question.

What was worse?

“What did Ethan find?””

Claire lowered her voice.

“Madison…”

“What?””

“He found the original documents.””

“What documents?””

“The ones proving who his biological father is.””

“And?””

“And proving who helped hide the truth.””

My fingers went numb.

“Who?””

Claire didn’t answer.

“Claire.””

“I’m sorry.””

“Who?””

The line went silent.

Then she whispered:

“Your father.””

I stopped breathing.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“My father died years ago.””

“I know.””

“Then how?””

Claire’s voice trembled.

“Because Ethan found his name.””

I looked at the photo of my father on the shelf.

A man I trusted.

A man I believed was honest.

A man who had always told me family was everything.

“What name?””

Claire whispered:

“Your father’s name was on a payment record.””

“What payment?””

“The payment made to keep Ethan’s birth secret.””

The room disappeared.

I couldn’t hear anything.

Not Robert.

Not the clock.

Not even my own breathing.

My father.

Ethan’s secret.

The payment.

The lie.

Then Robert suddenly stepped toward the window.

“Madison.””

I looked up.

“What?””

His face had gone pale.

“What?””

He pointed outside.

The black sedan was back.

But this time, it wasn’t parked across the street.

It was stopped directly in front of my house.

And the person getting out wasn’t a stranger.

It was Ethan.

He looked up at the window.

Our eyes met.

Then he mouthed three words.

*Trust no one.*
