Amused

Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

“He won’t be the only person coming after you.””

Denise Walker’s warning should have terrified me.

Maybe it did.

But something else was stronger.

Anger.

I stared at the letter in my hand.

The letter Ethan had written but never given me.

The letter that proved he had been carrying secrets while I was carrying his child.

“Denise,” I said quietly, “what does that mean?””

On the other end of the phone, she didn’t answer.

I could hear her breathing.

Heavy.

Uneven.

Like someone who had spent years holding something inside and was finally running out of strength.

“Mrs. Walker.””

“Don’t call me that.””

The sharpness in her voice surprised me.

For a moment, she didn’t sound like Ethan’s mother.

She sounded like a frightened woman.

“Madison,” she whispered, “you need to listen carefully.””

I looked around the apartment.

The locked drawer.

The papers.

The letter.

Everything Ethan had hidden.

“I’m listening.””

“You need to leave that apartment.””

“You said that already.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Ethan doesn’t know you found those documents.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“Then why would he come after me?””

“Because someone else might.””

“Who?””

Silence.

“Denise.””

She exhaled.

“I don’t know how much Ethan told you.””

“He told me nothing.””

The bitterness in my voice surprised even me.

“He left.””

Denise went quiet.

Then she said:

“I know.””

“You watched him.””

“I was there.””

“You sat outside in your car while your son left his pregnant wife alone.””

Another silence.

This one felt different.

Guilt.

“I know what it looked like.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You know exactly what it looked like.””

She didn’t argue.

For the first time since I met Denise, she didn’t have a perfect response.

No explanation.

No excuse.

Just silence.

“Madison…”

“What did you know?””

She hesitated.

“About what?””

“About Ethan leaving.””

I heard her take a breath.

“I knew he was angry.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

“Madison—”

“Did you know he was planning to separate from me?””

Silence.

My heart sank.

Because silence was an answer.

“You knew.””

“I knew he was thinking about it.””

“You knew my husband was preparing to leave me, and you still sat outside waiting for him?””

“I thought I could stop him.””

I laughed quietly.

A painful sound.

“By driving him to the airport?””

“I thought I could talk sense into him.””

“Did it work?””

“No.””

“Then why didn’t you come inside?””

Her voice cracked.

“Because I was ashamed.””

That stopped me.

I hadn’t expected that.

Not from Denise.

Not from the woman who always seemed untouchable.

“What?””

“I was ashamed because I knew what Ethan was doing.””

I looked down at the letter.

“You knew about the documents?””

“Yes.””

“You knew about the apartment?””

“Yes.””

“You knew about Olivia?””

A long pause.

“Yes.””

My stomach tightened.

The pain of hearing it from her was different.

Because Denise wasn’t a stranger.

She was the woman who helped plan our wedding.

The woman who held my hand at my baby shower.

The woman who called my unborn son “the next generation of the Walker family.””

“You all knew.””

“No.””

“Don’t.””

“Madison—”

“Don’t tell me I’m wrong.””

My voice shook.

“Your husband knew. You knew. Maybe Robert knew.

Claire knew things. Everyone knew something except me.””

“That’s not fair.””

I froze.

Not because of the words.

Because of the emotion behind them.

Denise sounded angry.

But not at me.

At herself.

“You’re right,” she whispered.

“I’m right?””

“Yes.””

The admission shocked me.

“My entire life,” Denise said, “I protected Ethan.””

“From what?””

“From the truth.””

I looked at the letter again.

The words blurred slightly.

*I am not a Walker.*

“Tell me.””

“Madison…”

“Tell me.””

My voice became firmer.

“I deserve to know.””

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then Denise said:

“Ethan discovered the truth three months ago.””

I sat down slowly.

Three months.

That was before the baby shower.

Before the nursery was finished.

Before he started acting different.

“What truth?””

“He found old medical records.””

“About his birth?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Denise’s breathing changed.

“He found out Robert wasn’t his biological father.””

I closed my eyes.

Even though I already knew, hearing it from her made it real.

“Who was?””

“I can’t tell you.””

My eyes opened.

“What?””

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because Ethan needs to tell you himself.””

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“My husband abandoned me, Denise.””

“I know.””

“He lied to me.””

“I know.””

“He was planning custody against me.””

“I know.””

“And you’re still protecting him?””

“No.””

Her answer came immediately.

“No, Madison.””

The emotion in her voice surprised me.

“I’m protecting you.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Because Ethan’s biological father is dangerous.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

Denise lowered her voice.

“There are things about that family that Ethan only recently discovered.””

“What family?””

“His biological family.””

I looked toward the door.

Suddenly the apartment felt different.

Not like a place where my husband kept secrets.

Like a place where someone had been watching.

“Why didn’t Ethan tell me?””

“Because he was scared.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“He was scared, so he left me?””

“Yes.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does if you understand what he found.””

“What did he find?””

Denise hesitated.

Then:

“He found out his biological father had been looking for him.””

A chill moved through me.

“Looking for him?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“I know enough.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

Her voice became quieter.

“That’s why I’m calling you.””

I stood up.

“Because you’re afraid.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“Of what?””

“That Ethan’s mistake will put you and the baby in the middle of something you don’t understand.””

I looked at my stomach.

Our son.

The baby Ethan left behind.

“What mistake?””

Denise was quiet.

Then she said:

“Ethan contacted him.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

“His biological father.””

“Why?””

“Because he wanted answers.””

“And?””

“And he got them.””

“What answers?””

Denise didn’t respond.

“Denise.””

“I don’t know everything.””

“You know enough.””

She sighed.

“He learned why his mother gave him up.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Gave him up?””

“Not exactly.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means the story Ethan grew up with was false.””

I thought about the note.

*Do not tell him.*

The warning.

The hidden birth certificate.

The secret father.

Everything was becoming bigger.

But one question kept coming back.

“Why did Ethan leave today?””

Denise was silent.

Then:

“Because he was trying to protect you.””

I stared at the phone.

“No.””

“He was.””

“No.””

My voice rose.

“If he wanted to protect me, he would have stayed.””

“I know.””

“If he wanted to protect our son, he would have been here.””

“I know.””

“Then don’t call abandonment protection.””

Denise didn’t respond.

Because she knew I was right.

For the first time, someone in Ethan’s family admitted what he had done.

“I found the letter,” I said.

Denise went silent.

“The one he wrote.””

Her breathing stopped.

“You opened it.””

“Yes.””

“Madison…”

“What else is in it?””

“Nothing you need to worry about.””

I almost laughed.

“Nothing?””

I looked at the documents scattered across the desk.

“Your son planned to leave me. He hid an apartment. He prepared legal papers. He put another woman’s name in his life.””

“Olivia is not what you think.””

“I don’t care about Olivia.””

That surprised her.

“I care that everyone lied.””

Denise was quiet.

Then she whispered:

“You’re stronger than Ethan expected.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He thought you would break.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“He said that?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Last night.””

My stomach dropped.

“Last night?””

“Yes.””

“What did he say?””

Denise hesitated.

Then:

“He said after he left, you would beg him to come home.””

A strange calm came over me.

Not sadness.

Not anger.

Something colder.

Because Ethan had misunderstood me completely.

He thought I was holding onto him because I couldn’t live without him.

He didn’t realize I had been holding onto the idea of him.

And that idea was gone.

“Where is he now?”” I asked.

“I don’t know.””

“You’re his mother.””

“He turned off his phone.””

“Why?””

“Because he received a message.””

“What message?””

Denise became quiet.

“Madison…”

“What message?””

Her answer came softly.

“One that made him leave earlier than planned.””

I looked at my phone.

At the documents.

At the letter.

“What did it say?””

Denise whispered:

“It said, ‘I know who you are.’”

A cold feeling spread through me.

“Who sent it?””

“I don’t know.””

“Denise.””

“I swear.””

Then another sound interrupted her.

A door closing.

My body stiffened.

“Are you alone?””

She didn’t answer.

“Denise?””

Her voice suddenly became frightened.

“Madison, listen to me.””

“What?””

“Someone is at my house.””

My heart began pounding.

“What?””

“I didn’t tell anyone I was calling you.””

“Denise, call the police.””

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

Because her next words made the blood leave my face.

“Because whoever is outside…”

She stopped.

Then whispered:

“They already know Ethan’s secret.””

May you like

The line went dead.

And at that exact moment, my own front door handle moved.
