Amused

Chapter 6: The Person Behind the Door

The door handle moved.

I froze.

For one impossible second, my mind refused to accept what I was seeing.

The front door.

The same door Ethan had walked out of that morning.

The same door I had locked after watching him leave.

Moving.

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Hello?””

No answer.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

I could hear my own heartbeat.

I could hear the refrigerator humming.

I could hear the faint ticking of the clock above the fireplace.

But nothing else.

My eyes moved toward the hallway.

The nursery was behind me.

The front door was in front of me.

And between them was every reason I had to stay calm.

My baby.

I lowered the phone slowly.

Then I heard it.

A knock.

Three soft taps.

Not aggressive.

Not rushed.

Almost polite.

That somehow scared me more.

“Who is it?””

My voice sounded steadier than I felt.

No answer.

Another knock.

Three taps.

I stepped backward.

My first instinct was to call Ethan.

I hated that.

Even after everything.

Even after he abandoned me.

Some part of me still wanted him to protect me.

But that was the old version of me.

The woman who believed her husband would always come back.

I looked at my phone.

Denise’s call was still disconnected.

I opened my emergency contacts.

My thumb hovered over Claire’s name.

Then the door moved again.

This time, I heard the lock.

Someone wasn’t knocking.

Someone was trying to get in.

I stepped away.

“Stop.””

My voice shook.

“If you don’t leave, I’m calling the police.””

A voice answered from the other side.

“Madison?””

My entire body went cold.

Because I knew that voice.

Not Ethan.

Not Denise.

Someone else.

Someone I had never expected.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“My name is Robert Walker.””

I stared at the door.

Ethan’s father.

The man sitting outside that morning while his son walked away.

The man who watched.

The man who said nothing.

“What do you want?””

“Open the door.””

“No.””

“Madison, please.””

Please.

The word sounded strange coming from him.

Robert Walker did not ask.

He commanded.

At least, that was how he always spoke around Ethan.

At family dinners.

At holidays.

During conversations where everyone else listened.

“What do you want?”” I repeated.

“I need to talk to you.””

“About what?””

Silence.

Then:

“About my son.””

I laughed quietly.

A bitter sound.

“Your son left me.””

“I know.””

“You watched him.””

“I know.””

“You let him.””

His voice softened.

“I made mistakes.””

The answer surprised me.

Robert admitting fault was something I had never heard.

Not once.

“Why are you here?””

“Because Denise called you.””

My stomach tightened.

“How do you know that?””

No answer.

“Robert.””

“Because I know what Ethan found.””

The air changed.

“You’re the one who scared Denise?””

“No.””

“Then why is she afraid?””

“Because she knows the truth.””

“What truth?””

A long pause.

Then Robert said:

“The same truth Ethan knows.””

I looked toward the hallway.

The apartment suddenly felt too exposed.

Too open.

“Go away.””

“Madison.””

“No.””

I stepped closer to the door.

“You don’t get to show up now.””

“I’m trying to help you.””

“Help me?””

My voice rose.

“Where was your help this morning?””

Silence.

“Where was your help when your son walked past the hospital bag?””

Nothing.

“Where was your help when he told his pregnant wife to call an Uber?””

Still nothing.

The silence was answer enough.

“You’re right,” Robert finally said.

That made me stop.

“I should have stopped him.””

“Yes.””

“I should have told him the truth sooner.””

My hand tightened around my phone.

“What truth?””

Robert didn’t answer.

And suddenly I understood.

Everyone kept doing the same thing.

Giving me warnings.

Giving me pieces.

But never the whole story.

“No.””

“What?””

“I’m done with this.””

“Madison—”

“No more secrets.””

My voice became sharper.

“You all keep saying you’re protecting me. But all you’re doing is protecting yourselves.””

Robert didn’t respond.

Because he knew.

“I deserve the truth.””

“You’re right.””

“Then tell me.””

A long silence.

Then:

“Open the door.””

“No.””

“Madison, please.””

“Tell me through the door.””

Another pause.

Then Robert said:

“Ethan is not the only one who found out the truth.””

I waited.

“I did too.””

My breath caught.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Twenty-eight years.””

The number hit me.

Twenty-eight years.

Ethan’s entire life.

“Robert…”

“I raised him.””

“But he’s not your son.””

The words hung between us.

Robert’s voice cracked.

“No.””

I didn’t expect that.

Not from him.

Not from the man who built his whole identity around the Walker name.

“I raised him,” he repeated.

“And that matters more than blood.””

I leaned against the wall.

“Then why lie?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Everyone is afraid.””

“Yes.””

“Everyone keeps using fear as an excuse.””

Robert didn’t argue.

“Maybe we deserve your anger.””

I closed my eyes.

The honesty was almost harder to handle than a lie.

“What did Ethan find?””

Robert sighed.

“His biological father’s identity.””

“And?””

“He found out why Denise gave him away.””

“Why?””

Silence.

Then:

“Because his father was dangerous.””

I looked toward the door.

“Dangerous how?””

“I can’t explain everything.””

“Of course you can’t.””

“Madison.””

“No.””

My voice broke.

“You don’t get to come here after decades of secrets and tell me you can’t explain.””

Robert was quiet.

Then he said:

“Ethan’s biological father was involved in things he shouldn’t have been.””

“What things?””

“Business.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

His voice became heavier.

“It’s not.””

“Was he criminal?””

Another pause.

“I don’t know.””

That answer bothered me.

Not because it sounded uncertain.

Because it sounded afraid.

“You don’t know?””

“I know what I saw.””

“What did you see?””

Robert didn’t answer.

Then:

“Documents.””

“What documents?””

“Financial records.””

My heart sank.

“Like what?””

“Transfers.””

“From where?””

“Different companies.””

“To who?””

“People who shouldn’t have been involved.””

The pieces moved in my head.

Ethan finding records.

Ethan contacting his biological father.

Ethan receiving a message.

Someone knowing his secret.

But none of it explained one thing.

“Why did Ethan leave me?””

Robert was silent.

Finally:

“Because he believed he was putting you in danger.””

I shook my head.

“He could have told me.””

“I know.””

“He could have trusted me.””

“I know.””

“He could have stayed.””

Robert’s voice became quiet.

“Yes.””

That one word hurt.

Because it was the first time someone from Ethan’s family admitted it.

“Yes.””

“He made the wrong choice.””

I stared at the door.

The man behind it was Ethan’s father in every way that mattered.

And maybe that was why his words hurt.

Because he understood what Ethan had lost.

“Where is Ethan?””

“I don’t know.””

“You’re his father.””

“He won’t answer.””

“Why?””

“Because he found something.””

“What?””

Robert hesitated.

Then:

“Something about Olivia.””

My heart sank.

Of course.

There was still Olivia.

The woman who appeared in every unanswered question.

“What about her?””

“Olivia isn’t who Ethan thinks she is.””

“What does that mean?””

“I don’t know.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“I’m telling you the truth.””

“No.””

I looked down.

“I think everyone has been telling me pieces of the truth.””

Robert was quiet.

Then he said:

“Madison, you need to leave.””

My body stiffened.

“Why?””

“Because if someone is looking for Ethan…”

He stopped.

“What?””

“You might be the easiest way to find him.””

A chill moved through me.

The baby kicked.

I placed my hand over my stomach.

“You think someone would hurt me?””

“I think someone already tried to scare Denise.””

“And now they know about me?””

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know anything.””

“No.””

His voice was low.

“But I know this.””

“What?””

“Ethan left because he thought distance would protect you.””

I looked around my home.

At the baby clothes.

The hospital bag.

The life we built.

“And now?””

“Now I think he realized too late that leaving you alone made you more vulnerable.””

I didn’t answer.

Because part of me hated that Robert’s words made sense.

Not enough to forgive Ethan.

Never that.

But enough to understand there was something bigger happening.

A sudden sound interrupted us.

A car door closing outside.

Robert stopped speaking.

“What was that?””

I moved toward the window.

Slowly.

Carefully.

I looked through the blinds.

A black sedan was parked across the street.

Someone sat inside.

Watching.

My breath caught.

“Robert.””

“What?””

“There’s a car outside.””

Silence.

Then:

“Madison, listen to me.””

“Who is it?””

“I don’t know.””

The driver’s door opened.

A man stepped out.

He looked toward my house.

Toward my window.

Toward me.

Then my phone buzzed.

A new message.

Unknown number.

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

There was only one sentence.

*You should have stayed out of Ethan Walker’s family.*

I looked at the door.

Then at the stranger outside.

Then at Robert’s voice coming through the phone.

“Madison.””

“What?””

His voice was barely a whisper.

“Do not let that person know you have the letter.””

My heart stopped.

Because I hadn’t told Robert about the letter.

I hadn’t told anyone.

Except Denise.

And Claire.

And now I realized something.

Someone had been listening.

Someone already knew.

The message on my phone changed.

A second text appeared.

*We know what Ethan hid.*

May you like

Then a third.

*And we know what you’re carrying.*
