Chapter 7: The Man Who Helped Them Destroy My Family
I read Daniel's message three times.
I was the one who helped Marcus find her.
For a moment, the room seemed to tilt.
Rachel stood beside me, her face pale. Evelyn had already taken photographs of the guardianship application and was speaking to the police officer who had remained outside.
I couldn't hear what they were saying.
All I could see was Daniel's name.
Daniel Hayes.
The man who had walked into my anniversary dinner carrying evidence against Marcus.
The man who had driven me to the hospital.
The man who had held the door open while I escaped my own house.
The man who had known my sister was alive.
And apparently, the man who had helped make her disappear.
I called him.
He answered immediately.
“Lauren.””
“Tell me it's not true.””
Silence.
“Daniel, tell me you didn't help Marcus find Rachel.””
He exhaled.
“I did.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Why?””
“Because I didn't know what he was planning.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No. I expect you to hear me before you decide.””
I looked at Rachel.
She shook her head.
I turned away.
“Start talking.””
“Eleven years ago, Marcus approached me through a financial services firm. He wanted help tracing certain transfers connected to your father's investments. He said your sister had taken confidential documents and disappeared with company money.””
Rachel laughed bitterly.
“He was lying.””
“I know that now,” Daniel replied.
I closed my eyes.
“Keep going.””
“I was young. I had just started my business. Marcus offered me a contract worth nearly half a million dollars. I agreed to investigate.””
“And you found Rachel.””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“In a clinic outside Richmond.””
Rachel's face hardened.
Daniel continued.
“I sent Marcus the location. I thought he was going to speak to her and recover the documents.””
“What happened?””
“I don't know everything. But two days later, the clinic reported that Rachel had been transferred to another facility. When I went back, her records were gone.””
Rachel stepped toward the phone.
“You gave him my location?””
“Yes.””
“You knew he had threatened me.””
“I knew he wanted the documents. I didn't know he'd arrange for you to be drugged.””
“You didn't ask?””
Daniel didn't answer.
Rachel's eyes filled with tears.
“You helped him take eleven years of my life.””
“I know.””
“No, you don't.””
Her voice cracked.
“You don't know what it's like to wake up in a room and have strangers tell you that your memories are false. You don't know what it's like to beg someone to believe you while they keep telling you that you're sick.””
Daniel's voice became unsteady.
“I am sorry.””
Rachel turned away.
I took the phone again.
“What about the document with your signature?””
“I signed a financial statement. Marcus attached it to the guardianship application without my permission.””
“Why did you sign it?””
“Because he told me it was an authorization to release old financial records.””
“Daniel, you keep saying you didn't know.””
“I know how that sounds.””
“It sounds like you keep finding ways to be innocent after helping him.””
He was silent.
Then he said something that changed the conversation.
“Lauren, I have the original recording from the night Marcus arranged Rachel's transfer.””
Rachel turned sharply.
“What?””
“I kept it because I became suspicious after the clinic changed its records. I recorded a conversation with Marcus and Dr. Bell.””
“Why didn't you give it to the police?””
“Because Marcus had something on me.””
“What?””
Daniel took a breath.
“Four years ago, he discovered that my company had processed some transactions that were later identified as fraudulent. I had signed off on them. He threatened to report me unless I cooperated.””
I stared at the wall.
“So you helped him steal money from me?””
“I helped process transactions I didn't fully understand. When I discovered the truth, I tried to stop him.””
“Not before you made money from it.””
“No.””
His honesty was almost worse than another lie.
“Where is the recording?””
“In a safe deposit box. I can give you the access information.””
“Why should I believe you?””
“You shouldn't. Let Evelyn verify everything.””
I ended the call.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Rachel took my hand.
“Don't let him turn us against each other.””
I looked at her.
“He already has.””
She shook her head.
“Not anymore.””
Evelyn arranged for the police to review Daniel's documents and requested an emergency protective order concerning the financial accounts.
She also contacted a forensic specialist to examine the guardianship application.
The next two hours were spent establishing what we knew and what we could prove.
The original trust documents were secure.
The attempted transfers had been blocked.
The medical evaluation was under formal challenge.
And Marcus had now become the subject of an investigation involving suspected financial fraud and the misuse of medical records.
But we still needed Daniel's recording.
At six that evening, he arrived at the house with a small metal key and a sealed envelope.
Rachel refused to meet him.
I stood on the porch.
He looked exhausted.
“Thank you for agreeing to see me.””
“I haven't agreed to forgive you.””
“I understand.””
He held out the envelope.
“Everything is inside. The recording, the original financial authorization, and a copy of the contract Marcus gave me eleven years ago.””
I didn't take it immediately.
“Why bring this now?””
“Because I heard what happened with Bell. And because Marcus called me this afternoon.””
“What did he want?””
Daniel looked toward the street.
“He wants me to testify that you agreed to enter the clinic voluntarily.””
I felt my stomach turn.
“And what did you tell him?””
“That I wouldn't.””
“Did he threaten you?””
“Yes.””
“What did he say?””
Daniel looked directly at me.
“He said if I didn't cooperate, he'd make sure I went to prison for the financial transactions I helped process.””
I stared at him.
“Are you afraid?””
“Terrified.””
“Good.””
He looked surprised.
I continued.
“Maybe now you understand a little of what Rachel lived through.””
He lowered his eyes.
“I do.””
I finally took the envelope.
Inside was a key and a handwritten note with a bank branch address.
Evelyn examined the documents.
Then she looked at Daniel.
“If this recording is authentic, it could be significant evidence.””
“It's authentic.””
“Then you'll need to give a formal statement.””
“I will.””
Daniel turned toward me.
“Lauren, there's something else.””
I waited.
“Marcus isn't acting alone.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who else?””
He glanced toward the house.
“Your husband's attorney. The same man who prepared the guardianship application. His name is Victor Lang.””
Evelyn frowned.
“Victor Lang?””
“You know him?””
She nodded slowly.
“He represented the original investment company that managed your father's accounts.””
Daniel continued.
“Victor has been involved since the beginning. He helped establish the shell companies and arranged the medical paperwork.””
Evelyn's expression became grim.
“That explains several irregularities.””
Daniel took out his phone.
“There was another message from Marcus. I saved it.””
He showed us the screen.
Marcus: The birthday deadline is approaching. We need Lauren committed before the trust activates.
Victor: The medical report must be filed tomorrow. Once the application is accepted, we can proceed.
Marcus: And Rachel?
Victor: She won't be a problem once the original records are destroyed.
Rachel appeared in the doorway.
“Destroyed?””
Daniel looked at her.
“That's what they discussed.””
Rachel stepped onto the porch.
“What original records?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Your mother kept copies of the original trust documents. Marcus has been looking for them for years.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“My mother?””
Rachel nodded slowly.
“She kept a second set of financial records in her personal belongings.””
“Where?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Dad told me they were hidden somewhere in the house we grew up in.””
The house had been sold after my father's death.
But I remembered something.
My mother's old cedar chest.
It had been stored in the attic of the family home for years. When Dad downsized, he told me he had moved it into a storage unit.
I looked at Rachel.
“Do you know where it is?””
She shook her head.
“No. But Dad told me never to let anyone throw it away.””
Evelyn immediately called the estate administrator.
After several minutes, she returned.
“The storage unit still exists.””
My heart began racing.
“Can we go there?””
“Tomorrow morning. With the estate representative and a witness.””
Rachel looked toward Daniel.
“And what about Marcus?””
Daniel's face darkened.
“He knows about the chest.””
“How?””
“Because Victor was the one who arranged its storage.””
A cold silence settled over the porch.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered cautiously.
A man's voice spoke.
“Mrs. Mitchell?””
“Yes?””
“This is Detective Harris with the county police department. We have located your husband.””
I looked at Evelyn.
“Where?””
“He's at the private medical facility where Dr. Bell practices.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
There was a pause.
“Because he has filed an emergency petition claiming you're a danger to yourself.””
I gripped the phone.
“I'm standing with my attorney.””
“I understand. But there's another issue.””
“What?””
“The facility has submitted a signed consent form bearing your name.””
I closed my eyes.
I had never signed anything.
May you like
Detective Harris continued.
“And according to the document, you're expected to arrive tonight.””
