Chapter 1: The Man at the Door
“Who did you invite?””
Marcus's voice was sharp enough to cut through the soft music playing in the dining room.
I looked directly at him.
“Someone who deserves to be here.””
Vanessa Cole slowly lowered her wineglass. Her diamond earrings caught the candlelight as she glanced between us.
“Marcus, who is it?”” she asked.
He pushed his chair backward.
“Lauren, I'm asking you a question.””
“And I answered.””
The doorbell rang again.
For eight years, I had been the woman who rushed to answer that bell whenever Marcus entertained business associates. I had been the woman who remembered birthdays, arranged dinner parties, sent thank-you cards, and made sure nobody ever noticed when her husband forgot to acknowledge her efforts.
Tonight, I decided I was finished making things comfortable for everyone else.
I walked toward the front door.
Behind me, Marcus called my name.
I didn't stop.
When I opened it, Daniel Hayes stood on the porch.
He was in his early forties, with dark hair, a charcoal overcoat, and the exhausted expression of a man who hadn't slept properly in weeks. His eyes moved past me toward the dining room.
Then he saw Vanessa.
His jaw tightened.
“Good evening, Vanessa.””
Vanessa went completely still.
“Daniel?””
Marcus appeared behind me.
“What the hell is this?””
Daniel stepped inside without waiting for an invitation.
“An anniversary dinner, apparently.””
Marcus looked at me, his face turning red.
“You invited her husband?””
“I invited someone who has been trying to tell me the truth.””
Daniel removed a thick brown envelope from beneath his coat.
“Actually, Marcus, I think it's time we stopped pretending.””
Vanessa stood abruptly.
“Daniel, this isn't the place.””
He looked at her bracelet.
“Funny. I was going to say the same thing when I saw the receipt for that little anniversary present.””
Vanessa's hand immediately covered the sapphire.
Marcus moved between them.
“Whatever you think you've discovered, you need to leave.””
Daniel laughed without humor.
“That's exactly what you told me when I found out about the hotel in Boston.””
My stomach tightened.
Boston.
Marcus had supposedly attended a three-day investment conference there in September. He had called me every night, complaining about exhausting meetings and terrible room service.
I remembered sending him photographs of the flowers in our garden.
He had responded with a single heart emoji.
“Daniel,” I said quietly, “what hotel?””
He turned toward me.
“The Whitmore. September fourteenth through the seventeenth. Your husband and my wife shared a suite.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You don't have to do this.””
“Don't I?”” Daniel asked.
“You told me you were visiting your sister.””
Marcus pointed toward the front door.
“Get out.””
Daniel ignored him and placed the envelope on the dining table.
“Lauren, I know this is difficult. But you need to see these.””
I approached the table.
Inside were printed hotel records, photographs, bank transfers, and screenshots of messages.
The first photograph showed Marcus and Vanessa walking into a hotel lobby.
His hand rested against the small of her back.
The second showed them entering an elevator together.
The third was taken outside a restaurant.
Marcus was kissing her.
I felt the room tilt.
Not because I hadn't suspected an affair.
Because the photograph was dated eight months earlier.
Eight months.
I remembered that week.
My father had been in the hospital following a heart procedure. I had spent two nights sleeping in a plastic chair beside his bed, calling Marcus whenever I needed reassurance.
He had told me he couldn't come because an important client was visiting.
I stared at the photograph.
“He told me he was working.””
Daniel's expression softened.
“I know.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You don't know anything about our relationship.””
Daniel turned to her.
“I know you used our joint account to pay for a vacation in California. I know you told me you were helping your mother. I know you transferred money to Marcus's company. And I know you used my credit card to buy jewelry for him.””
Marcus scoffed.
“Are you finished?””
“No,” Daniel replied.
“Not even close.””
He pulled another document from the envelope.
“This is what I really came to show Lauren.””
It was a bank statement.
My name appeared at the top.
So did an account number I didn't recognize.
I looked closer.
“What's this?””
Daniel pointed to a series of transactions.
“Your husband's company has been receiving money from an account opened in your name.””
I frowned.
“That's impossible.””
Marcus immediately reached for the paper.
“Daniel, stop.””
Daniel pulled it away.
“Why? Afraid she'll finally ask where the money went?””
I looked at Marcus.
“Did you open a bank account in my name?””
He straightened his jacket.
“It's a business arrangement. You wouldn't understand the details.””
“Then explain them.””
“Not now.””
“You brought another woman into our house on our anniversary, and you think now isn't a good time?””
Vanessa sighed.
“Oh, Lauren. You're making this so much more dramatic than it needs to be.””
I turned toward her.
“You're wearing my anniversary present.””
She looked down at her wrist.
“Marcus gave it to me.””
“And apparently my money paid for it.””
Marcus slammed his hand against the table.
“Enough!””
The candles trembled.
He pointed at Daniel.
“This man has been harassing us. He's bitter because his marriage is falling apart, and he's trying to drag everyone into his mess.””
Daniel calmly took out his phone.
“Would you like me to play the recording?””
Marcus's expression changed.
“What recording?””
“The one where you explain why Lauren needs to keep taking those pills.””
The room fell silent.
I felt something cold move through my chest.
The pills.
The small white tablets Marcus had been giving me every night for six months.
I turned toward my husband.
“What does he mean?””
Marcus didn't answer.
Daniel looked at me.
“Lauren, how long have you been taking medication prescribed by your doctor?””
“Six months.””
“Do you know the name?””
I shook my head.
“Marcus collects the prescription. He says the pharmacy packages everything.””
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
Then he opened the envelope and handed me a printed photograph.
It showed a small prescription bottle.
The label had my name on it.
But the prescribing physician wasn't my regular doctor.
I read the name twice.
Dr. Richard Bell.
I'd never heard of him.
“Who is this?”” I whispered.
Daniel's voice dropped.
“That's what I've been trying to find out.””
Marcus reached for my arm.
“Lauren, come with me. We need to talk privately.””
I stepped away.
“Don't touch me.””
For the first time that evening, he looked genuinely surprised.
“I'm your husband.””
“Then why does another man's evidence explain my life better than you do?””
Vanessa moved toward the staircase.
“I think I should leave.””
Daniel blocked her path.
“Not yet.””
She glared at him.
“You have no right to keep me here.””
“I'm not keeping you anywhere. But before you go, I'd like you to explain the messages you sent Marcus last Tuesday.””
Marcus's face went pale.
I looked between them.
“What messages?””
Daniel unlocked his phone and turned the screen toward me.
The first message was dated three days earlier.
Vanessa: She still hasn't noticed anything?
Marcus: She's sleeping more. Everything is going according to plan.
Vanessa: And the papers?
Marcus: I'll get her signature after the anniversary.
I read the exchange again.
My fingers went numb.
“What papers?””
Neither of them answered.
Then Daniel scrolled down.
There was another message.
Marcus: Once Lauren signs, we won't have to worry about her interfering again.
I looked up.
Marcus was no longer pretending to be angry.
He was frightened.
And that frightened me more than anything else.
“Marcus,” I whispered, “what exactly have you been planning to make me sign?””
He stared at me.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“Lauren, there's something you should know about your husband.””
She glanced at Marcus before continuing.
“He didn't invite me here just because he wanted company tonight.””
I swallowed.
“What do you mean?””
Vanessa's lips parted.
“Tonight was supposed to be the night he finally—”
Marcus grabbed her wrist.
“Shut up.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Take your hands off her.””
Vanessa pulled free, her eyes filling with tears.
Then she looked directly at me.
May you like
“Your husband was planning to have you declared mentally incompetent.””
And suddenly, every forgotten conversation, every unexplained headache, and every evening I had fallen asleep before finishing dinner took on a terrifying new meaning.
