Amused

Chapter 6: The Sister Who Came Back From the Dead

Evelyn didn't sit down.

She paced beside the café window, speaking rapidly into her phone while Claire gathered the documents.

I remained frozen in my chair.

“Marcus accessed the trust?”” I asked.

Evelyn ended the call.

“Someone using credentials associated with his former attorney's office accessed the digital archive last night.””

“But the trust was frozen.””

“The financial transfers were frozen. The document archive is a separate matter.””

“What did he take?””

Evelyn looked at Claire.

“An original beneficiary schedule, the trust's amendment history, and a sealed attachment.””

Claire went pale.

“Which attachment?””

“The one containing the identity of the person your father appointed as successor protector.””

Claire sat down slowly.

“Oh, no.””

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn opened her laptop.

“Your father appointed someone to oversee the trust if you were ever unable to manage it. That person has authority to challenge suspicious transactions and prevent unauthorized changes.””

“Who?””

She turned the screen toward me.

A name appeared.

Rachel Bennett.

I stared.

“Bennett?””

Claire nodded.

“It's the identity she has been using.””

My heart began racing.

“Rachel is protecting my inheritance?””

“Your father arranged it,” Evelyn said.

“He wanted someone he trusted to stand between you and Marcus if necessary.””

I looked at Claire.

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

“Because the identity was protected. Your father made it clear that nobody should reveal Rachel's location until the trust was threatened.””

I swallowed.

“And now?””

“Now Marcus knows she is connected to the trust.””

Evelyn closed the laptop.

“We need to move quickly.””

She called the trust administrator and requested an emergency security review. Claire contacted someone in North Carolina.

I sat silently while they worked.

I was beginning to understand how carefully my father had planned for this moment.

He had known Marcus was dangerous.

He had known Rachel was alive.

And he had built a structure designed to protect me if Marcus ever tried to take control.

But he had also known something else.

That I might never discover the truth until it was almost too late.

We left Savannah before noon.

Evelyn drove while Claire sat in the back, making calls.

I kept looking at the photograph of Rachel.

I wanted to remember her voice.

I remembered her laughing in the kitchen, stealing fries from my plate, and singing loudly in the car whenever our mother played old songs.

But the memories were becoming blurred.

Eleven years was a long time.

And now I was afraid that when I finally saw her again, she wouldn't recognize the person I had become.

My phone rang.

Marcus.

I declined.

A message appeared.

*Lauren, you're making a terrible mistake.*

Another followed.

*Rachel is not who you think she is.*

I stared at it.

Then a third message arrived.

*Ask her what happened to your mother.*

My blood turned cold.

I looked toward Evelyn.

“Marcus just sent me something.””

She glanced at the screen.

Her hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“Don't answer.””

“Why would he mention my mother?””

Claire leaned forward.

“Show me.””

I handed her the phone.

She read the message.

Then she looked away.

“What?”” I demanded.

“Claire?””

She hesitated.

“Your mother died from complications following surgery.””

“I know.””

“Your father never believed the hospital had told him everything.””

I stared at her.

“What are you saying?””

Claire took a slow breath.

“Your mother was treated at the same private clinic where Rachel was admitted years later.””

I felt sick.

“Why?””

“Because Dr. Bell worked there.””

The road seemed to disappear beneath us.

My mother had died fourteen years earlier.

I had been twenty.

Rachel had disappeared three years after that.

And Marcus had entered my life shortly before my mother's death.

“Did Marcus know my mother?””

Claire nodded.

“He visited her at the hospital.””

I shook my head.

“No. That's impossible. I never saw him there.””

“He told your father he was helping with some paperwork.””

I closed my eyes.

A terrible possibility formed in my mind.

“Did my mother know something about him?””

Claire looked at me.

“I think she did.””

We arrived in North Carolina shortly after four.

Claire directed Evelyn to a quiet residential neighborhood outside Asheville.

The houses were separated by tall trees and long driveways. It was the kind of place where nobody looked twice at a passing car.

We stopped outside a small white house with blue shutters.

Claire got out first.

“Wait here.””

She walked up the front path and knocked three times.

Nothing happened.

She knocked again.

A curtain moved.

Then the front door opened.

A woman stood in the doorway.

I forgot how to breathe.

Rachel.

She looked at Claire, then glanced toward the car.

Her eyes found mine.

For several seconds, she didn't move.

Then she whispered something.

“Lauren?””

I stepped out of the car.

My legs felt weak.

“Rachel.””

She covered her mouth.

Then she walked down the steps.

I had imagined this moment hundreds of times when I was younger.

I had imagined running into her arms, crying, demanding explanations, and asking why she had left.

But when she stood in front of me, all I could do was stare.

She reached out and touched my cheek.

“You're real.””

I laughed through my tears.

“So are you.””

Then she pulled me into her arms.

I held her tightly.

She smelled like lavender soap and cold air.

For the first time in eleven years, I was hugging my sister.

And she was hugging me back.

Inside, Rachel made tea.

She moved carefully, almost cautiously, as if she had forgotten how to share a room with another person.

We sat across from each other at a small kitchen table.

I noticed the scar above her eyebrow.

The same scar.

“You look older,” she said.

I laughed weakly.

“So do you.””

She smiled.

Then her expression changed.

“Dad?””

I looked down.

“He died two years ago.””

Rachel closed her eyes.

Her fingers tightened around the teacup.

“No.””

“I'm sorry.””

She shook her head.

“No, no. I should have known.””

“He left you something.””

I took out the letter and placed it on the table.

Rachel recognized his handwriting immediately.

She pressed the paper against her chest.

For several minutes, she couldn't speak.

When she finally opened it, tears ran down her face.

“He promised he'd wait.””

I reached across the table.

“He never stopped looking for you.””

Rachel shook her head.

“I know. That's why I stayed away.””

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“Because Marcus threatened him.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“What exactly happened eleven years ago?””

Rachel took a long breath.

“I found evidence that Marcus was moving money from Dad's investment accounts. At first, I thought he was making mistakes. Then I found transfers that had been approved using Dad's signature.””

“Was Dad aware?””

“Not at first. When I told him, he hired Claire to investigate.””

Rachel glanced toward the living room.

“Marcus found out.””

“What did he do?””

“He confronted me in the parking garage outside my office. He told me to stop investigating or he'd make sure you lost everything.””

I swallowed.

“He threatened me?””

“He said he'd use you to get to Dad. He knew you trusted him.””

I looked down.

Rachel continued.

“I tried to leave town. But on the night I disappeared, someone followed me. My car was forced off the road. I woke up in a private clinic three days later.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“Dr. Bell told me I'd suffered a mental breakdown. He said I had made false accusations against Marcus and that my family believed I was unstable.””

My hands began shaking.

“Did you believe him?””

“For a while. They gave me medication that made it difficult to think clearly. I couldn't remember entire conversations. I couldn't even remember how I'd ended up there.””

I felt cold all over.

Rachel looked directly at me.

“When I finally escaped, Claire helped me disappear.””

“Why didn't you go to the police?””

“I tried. But Marcus had already created a medical record that made me look unreliable. And I had no proof that he was behind the accident.””

She leaned forward.

“Lauren, that's why I was so frightened when I learned you had married him.””

I looked away.

“Dad knew?””

“Yes. He begged me to come home. But I told him I wouldn't return until I had enough evidence to stop Marcus.””

I thought about the email.

Lauren — Phase Two.

“Rachel, Marcus has been giving me medication.””

Her face changed instantly.

“What medication?””

“I don't know. The hospital is testing it.””

“Since when?””

“Six months.””

She stood so quickly that her chair scraped across the floor.

“Six months?””

I nodded.

Rachel walked toward the kitchen counter, gripping its edge.

“Lauren, he did the same thing to me.””

I swallowed.

“Dr. Bell?””

“Yes.””

She turned toward me.

“Marcus didn't just want control of your money. He wanted to make sure nobody would believe you if you tried to expose him.””

I felt tears gathering again.

Rachel came back and held my hands.

“We're going to stop him.””

For the first time since the anniversary dinner, I believed that might be possible.

Then Claire entered the kitchen.

She had been speaking to Evelyn outside.

“There's a problem,” she said.

Rachel immediately stood.

“What happened?””

“Marcus knows where you are.””

Rachel's face went white.

“How?””

“Someone accessed the trust archive and downloaded the old beneficiary records. Your identity was included.””

I looked toward the windows.

The curtains were open.

A car passed slowly along the road.

Then another.

Rachel moved toward the front door.

“Did you tell anyone I was here?””

“No,” Claire replied.

Rachel shook her head.

“Someone must have followed you.””

Evelyn entered behind Claire, holding her phone.

“Lauren, we need to leave.””

“Why?””

She turned the screen toward me.

A photograph showed the front of Rachel's house.

It had been taken from across the street.

The timestamp was less than ten minutes old.

Beneath it was a message from an unknown number.

*Tell Rachel her time is up. Marcus wants what belongs to him.*

Rachel stared at the photograph.

Then she whispered:

“He found me.””

A sudden crash came from upstairs.

We all turned.

Rachel's face drained of color.

“That wasn't Marcus,” she said.

“What do you mean?”” I asked.

May you like

She grabbed my hand.

“There's someone else in this house.””
