Amused

Chapter 9: The Daughter Hidden in Plain Sight

I stared at the message until the screen went dark.

Then I turned it back on.

As if the words might change.

They didn’t.

*You have three daughters, Ryan.*

*And one of them has been living in your house this entire time.*

My first thought was Lily.

Then Mia.

Then a horrible third possibility entered my mind.

Someone else.

Another child.

Another secret.

Another part of my life stolen from me.

I looked at Claire.

She immediately knew.

Not because I said anything.

Because fear appeared on her face.

“Who sent that?””

I held up the phone.

Nobody moved.

My mother covered her mouth.

My father looked like he already knew what was coming.

But Claire…

Claire looked devastated.

Not surprised.

Devastated.

That was the answer.

“Claire.””

My voice was quiet.

“Who is the third daughter?””

She looked away.

“Ryan.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“Not this time.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I wanted to tell you.””

I almost laughed.

“How many times have I heard that?””

She lowered her head.

“I know.””

“Who is she?””

Claire didn’t answer.

Daniel did.

“She’s been beside you for years.””

I turned toward him.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at Claire.

“She never told him?””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Tell me.””

Daniel took a breath.

“Your third daughter is someone you already know.””

The room became silent.

I thought about everyone.

Every person in my life.

Every child I had ever met.

Then I looked at Claire.

Her face told me the truth before anyone spoke.

“No.””

She whispered:

“Ryan…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“Don’t.””

But she continued.

“Her name is Lily.””

The world stopped.

I stared.

“What?””

Claire started crying.

“Lily is not your biological daughter.””

The words didn’t make sense.

I looked toward the doorway.

Toward the little girl I had raised.

The child who called me Daddy.

The child whose drawings covered our refrigerator.

The child whose tiny shoes sat by the front door.

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“No.””

Claire reached toward me.

I moved away.

“Explain.””

She wiped her face.

“After Ava died, I found out I couldn’t have another child.””

I said nothing.

“Then the doctors told me about another option.””

My stomach tightened.

“No.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Don’t tell me.””

But she did.

“Lily was created from an embryo.””

I stared.

“Whose?””

Claire looked at me.

“Yours.””

My breath stopped.

“And?””

She closed her eyes.

“Emma’s.””

The room went silent.

I couldn’t speak.

Couldn’t move.

Lily.

My daughter.

The little girl I had loved since the moment I held her.

Was connected to Emma.

To Mia.

To everything.

“She’s my daughter.””

Claire nodded quickly.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Her answer was barely audible.

“Because I was afraid you would leave.””

I looked at her.

“You raised my child and hid the truth.””

“I loved her.””

“So did I.””

The words came out sharper than I expected.

“I loved her without knowing.””

Claire cried harder.

“I know.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t.””

I looked around the room.

“Do you know what it feels like to find out every important relationship in your life came with a secret?””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could.

Then Mia stepped forward.

“Daddy?””

I looked at her.

Her face was full of fear.

“Is Lily still my sister?””

That question broke through everything.

Because despite all the lies, the science, the secrets, the betrayal…

The children were innocent.

I walked toward her.

“Yes.””

She looked relieved.

“Really?””

“Yes.””

I knelt beside her.

“Nothing changes that.””

Then I looked toward the hallway.

“Where is Lily?””

Everyone froze.

I stood.

“Where is my daughter?””

Claire’s face changed.

“She’s safe.””

“Where?””

She hesitated.

That was enough.

“Claire.””

“She’s with someone.””

“Who?””

She looked terrified.

“Your mother.””

My entire body went cold.

“What?””

“She took Lily before we left.””

I turned toward my mother.

“Why?””

My mother looked devastated.

“Because she was the only child left.””

I stared.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

She looked at Mia.

Then at the photograph.

“She wanted to protect Lily.””

“From what?””

My mother whispered:

“From the same people who wanted Ava.””

Silence.

Daniel stepped forward.

“She knows where they’re coming from.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“The organization your grandfather created.””

I closed my eyes.

Every answer created five more questions.

“Where is Lily?””

My mother looked at me.

“I can take you to her.””

I didn’t trust her.

But I didn’t have a choice.

Not when my daughter was involved.

Before we could leave, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

This time, I answered immediately.

“Where is my daughter?””

A voice responded.

A man.

Calm.

Controlled.

“Which one?””

My blood ran cold.

“You took Lily.””

“No.””

The man paused.

“I’m calling because I’m trying to save her.””

“Who are you?””

“You already know me.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“I was the doctor.””

The room went silent.

“What doctor?””

“The doctor who helped Claire create Lily.””

I looked at Claire.

She looked terrified.

The man continued.

“Ryan, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Lily was never the final experiment.””

My grip tightened.

“What are you talking about?””

“The goal was never to create one child.””

Silence.

“It was to create a bloodline.””

I felt sick.

“And Mia?””

“Yes.””

“And Ava?””

“Yes.””

I looked at the photograph.

“Then why did Emma hide them?””

“Because she found out the truth.””

“What truth?””

The man’s voice lowered.

“That one of the children was different.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

The call went silent for a moment.

Then he said:

“It means one of your daughters inherited something your family has been searching for.””

I looked at Mia.

Then at the photograph.

Then toward the empty hallway where Lily should have been.

“Which daughter?””

The man didn’t answer.

Instead, he said:

“You have five minutes to decide who you trust.””

Then the line went dead.

I stood there.

Everyone watched me.

My father.

My mother.

Claire.

Daniel.

All people who had lied to me.

All people who claimed they were protecting someone.

And somewhere, Lily was waiting.

Mia was waiting.

My daughters were waiting.

I looked at Claire.

For the first time, I didn’t see the woman who betrayed me.

I saw the mother who was terrified of losing her child.

Then I looked at my parents.

The people who had shaped my entire life.

And finally, I looked at Daniel.

The man who claimed he was trying to expose everything.

I didn’t know who was telling the truth anymore.

But I knew one thing.

I was done letting other people decide what happened to my family.

I picked up the photograph of the little girl Emma had left behind.

Then I looked at everyone.

“We’re going to find Lily.””

My father nodded.

“And after that?””

I looked at the hidden photograph.

“At the end of this, every secret comes out.””

We left the building together.

But before we reached the car, my phone buzzed one more time.

A final message.

A photo.

I opened it.

And my heart stopped.

It was Lily.

Standing in a room I recognized.

My house.

My daughter was back home.

But she wasn’t alone.

Behind her stood a woman.

A woman I had believed was dead.

May you like

And beneath the photo was one sentence.

*Come home, Ryan. Your real family is waiting.*
