Amused

Chapter 2: The Daughter I Never Knew

I wish I could say that time stopped when Claire told me she was my daughter.

But it didn’t.

The rain kept hitting the windows.

The old house kept creaking.

The clock on the hallway wall kept ticking like nothing had happened.

Only my world had changed.

I stood there staring at the little girl behind the hidden door, waiting for someone to tell me this was a misunderstanding.

A cruel mistake.

A nightmare.

Anything except the truth.

“My daughter?”” I repeated.

The words felt impossible in my mouth.

Claire looked down.

“Yes.””

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because my mind couldn’t accept it.

“No.””

Her eyes lifted toward me.

“Ryan…”

“No.””

I pointed toward the little girl.

“You’re telling me there is a child living inside our wall, a child I’ve never seen before, and she’s mine?””

The little girl flinched at my raised voice.

That broke something inside me.

I immediately lowered my tone.

“I’m sorry.””

She stared at the floor.

Like she had learned that adults being angry was something she had to survive.

I looked at Claire.

“What is her name?””

“Mia.””

“How old is she?””

Claire hesitated.

“Six.””

I closed my eyes.

Six.

The number kept repeating in my head.

Six years old.

The same age she would be if she had been born before Lily.

The same age she would be if Claire had hidden an entire child from me.

I looked at the girl again.

“Mia.””

She slowly looked up.

Her eyes were the first thing I noticed.

Because they were mine.

The same dark brown eyes I saw every morning when I looked in the mirror.

My knees almost gave out.

“No,” I whispered.

Mia tilted her head.

“Daddy?””

I turned away.

I couldn’t handle that word.

Not yet.

Not from her.

Not after missing every birthday.

Every first step.

Every nightmare.

Every moment when she needed someone.

I walked out of the room.

Behind me, I heard Claire say my name.

“Ryan.””

I stopped in the hallway.

“Don’t.””

Silence.

“Don’t say my name like you’re the one who’s hurt.””

Her breathing changed.

I knew I had hit the truth.

Because she didn’t argue.

I turned around.

“How?””

Claire wiped her face.

“I can explain.””

“No.””

My voice was cold.

“You can start explaining.””

She looked toward Lily.

Our four-year-old daughter was still standing near the doorway, holding the empty plate she had used to bring food to Mia.

Claire noticed her.

“Lily, sweetheart, can you go downstairs for a minute?””

Lily looked between us.

“But Mia is scared.””

My heart broke.

Even now, after discovering the biggest secret of my life, my little girl was worried about someone else.

I knelt beside her.

“Lily, can you do something for Daddy?””

She nodded.

“Can you sit with your toys downstairs? I’ll come get you soon.””

“Are you mad at Mia?””

The question caught me off guard.

“No.””

I looked toward the hidden room.

“I’m not mad at Mia.””

“Are you mad at Mommy?””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

Lily’s small face fell.

Children always know more than adults think.

I touched her hair.

“Go downstairs, okay?””

She nodded slowly and walked away.

When she disappeared down the stairs, I faced Claire again.

“Now tell me everything.””

Claire sat on the edge of Lily’s bed.

She looked exhausted.

Older.

Like the secret she had carried had finally crushed her.

“It started before we met.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“Mia was born before you and I were together.””

I said nothing.

Waiting.

Claire looked toward the hidden room.

“Mia’s mother was someone you knew.””

The room suddenly felt colder.

“Who?””

Claire’s lips trembled.

“Emma.””

The name hit me immediately.

Emma Carter.

My first serious relationship.

The woman who disappeared from my life six years earlier.

The woman I had not thought about in years.

I took a step back.

“No.””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at Mia.

Then back at Claire.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Claire’s voice cracked.

“Because Emma came to me.””

I stared at her.

“Why would she come to you?””

Claire looked down.

“Because she was dying.””

The words hung between us.

I didn’t know what to say.

Emma had died?

When?

How?

Why had nobody told me?

“She had cancer,” Claire whispered.

My anger didn’t disappear.

But confusion pushed through it.

“She had a daughter.””

“Yes.””

“And she knew I was the father?””

Claire didn’t answer immediately.

That was the answer.

I felt my hands tighten.

“Claire.””

“She wasn’t sure at first.””

“What does that mean?””

“She found out she was pregnant after you two broke up.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

“Ryan, you were gone. You moved across the state. You changed your number.””

“Because Emma ended things.””

Claire looked at me.

“She told you she did.””

The sentence stopped me.

“What are you saying?””

Claire looked terrified.

“I’m saying Emma didn’t leave because she stopped loving you.””

I stared at her.

“Then why?””

Claire took a shaky breath.

“Because someone told her to.””

The room went silent.

“Who?””

Claire looked at the floor.

“I did.””

I felt like I had been punched.

“You?””

She nodded.

“I was jealous.””

For the first time that night, I saw Claire not as my wife.

Not as Lily’s mother.

But as a stranger.

“You broke us apart?””

“I was young.””

“No.””

My voice rose.

“You don’t get to call this young.””

She started crying.

“I loved you.””

“You loved me so much you destroyed another person’s life?””

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

I pointed toward the wall.

“Claire, a mistake is forgetting an anniversary. A mistake is saying something hurtful in an argument.””

My voice cracked.

“This is a child.””

She covered her face.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

I walked closer.

“You hid my daughter from me for six years.””

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She looked up.

“Of losing you.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You kept a child hidden because you thought I would leave?””

She whispered.

“Yes.””

I looked back toward the hidden room.

Mia was still sitting quietly.

Listening.

She had heard everything.

And somehow that hurt more than anything else.

I walked toward her.

“Mia?””

She looked up.

“Yes?””

I crouched down.

I didn’t know what to say.

How do you speak to a child who has spent her entire life waiting for a father who never came?

“I’m sorry.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Mommy said you forgot me.””

My chest tightened.

“I didn’t know.””

She looked confused.

“You didn’t?””

“No.””

She hugged her rabbit.

“Mommy said you had a new family.””

I looked toward Claire.

She looked away.

I felt anger rising again.

But I forced myself to focus on Mia.

“I do have a family.””

Her expression changed.

I quickly added:

“But that doesn’t mean I didn’t want you.””

She stared at me.

“Really?””

I nodded.

“Really.””

A tiny sound came from her.

A sob she was trying to hide.

Then she asked the question I wasn’t ready for.

“Why didn’t you come find me?””

I had no answer.

Because the truth was worse than any explanation.

I didn’t know she existed.

I reached for her hand.

She hesitated.

Then she let me hold it.

Her fingers were cold.

Too cold.

I looked around the hidden room.

The thin blanket.

The small bed.

The drawings.

“How long has she been living here?””

Claire went quiet.

Too quiet.

I stood up.

“Claire.””

She looked afraid again.

“Tell me.””

“She wasn’t always here.””

“Then where was she?””

Claire’s face changed.

And I knew there was another secret.

Another piece she had hidden.

“She lived with Emma.””

“When?””

“Until two months ago.””

I stared.

“Two months?””

Claire nodded.

“Emma got worse.””

“And then?””

Claire looked toward Mia.

“She brought her here.””

My stomach turned.

“Emma brought her here?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Claire whispered:

“Because she said there was nowhere else safe.””

The words bothered me.

Nowhere else safe.

Safe from what?

I looked at Claire.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

She didn’t answer.

Then my phone rang.

The sound cut through the room.

I looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something inside me told me not to.

I answered.

“Hello?””

For a few seconds, there was only silence.

Then a woman’s voice spoke.

A voice I had not heard in six years.

“Ryan?””

My entire body froze.

“Emma?””

Claire gasped.

The phone slipped slightly in my hand.

May you like

Because the dead woman on the other end whispered the words that made me realize the secret behind my wall was only the beginning.

“I need you to get Mia out of that house before Claire finds out I’m still alive.””
