Chapter 6: The Secret Room Beneath the House
Mia’s scream cut through the house like a knife.
I dropped the phone.
For one terrifying second, my mind went completely blank.
Then I ran.
I didn’t think.
I didn’t ask questions.
I just ran toward the stairs.
Behind me, I heard my father shout my name.
“Ryan, wait!””
I ignored him.
The only thing I could hear was Mia crying.
“Daddy!””
I reached the bedroom in seconds.
Claire was standing beside the hidden room, her face frozen in fear.
But Mia wasn’t inside.
The little girl was standing near the opposite wall, pointing at something on the floor.
Something I had never seen before.
A small wooden door.
Hidden beneath the rug.
My heart dropped.
“What happened?””
Mia ran toward me.
“He came.””
I grabbed her shoulders gently.
“Who came?””
She looked toward the floor.
“The man.””
My body went cold.
“What man?””
“The man Mommy told me not to talk about.””
I looked at Claire.
She looked like she wanted to disappear.
“Claire.””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know how.””
I stared at her.
“You don’t know?””
She stepped back.
“I swear.””
My father entered the room behind me.
When he saw the wooden door, his entire expression changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“You knew about this?””
I turned toward him.
His silence answered.
My anger returned instantly.
“You knew.””
He looked away.
“Ryan…”
“No.””
I pointed toward the floor.
“Another hidden door?””
He closed his eyes.
“I hoped we would never find it.””
The words made my blood run cold.
“What is underneath my house?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Claire.
Then my father.
Then Mia.
Finally, I grabbed the handle.
My father stepped forward.
“Don’t open it.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because once you see what’s down there, there’s no going back.””
I laughed quietly.
“There hasn’t been a way back since I found a child living behind my daughter’s wall.””
I opened the door.
A narrow staircase disappeared into darkness.
Cold air rose from below.
The smell was different from the hidden room.
Not dust.
Not old wood.
Something else.
Something metallic.
I turned on my phone flashlight.
“I’m going down.””
My father grabbed my arm.
“I’m coming with you.””
I pulled away.
“You lost the right to tell me what to do.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
Then he followed anyway.
I hated that I was relieved.
The staircase was older than the house itself.
The walls were made of rough stone.
Each step creaked under our weight.
Behind us, Claire stayed upstairs with Mia.
Good.
At least one person in this family was protecting my daughter.
After twenty steps, we reached a small underground room.
And I stopped.
Because this wasn’t a basement.
It was an archive.
Shelves covered every wall.
Boxes filled every corner.
Documents.
Photographs.
Old files.
My father walked past me slowly.
“I found this three years ago.””
I turned.
“You found it?””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I was trying to protect you.””
I almost shouted.
“Stop saying that.””
He looked at me.
I lowered my voice.
“Everyone who lies to me says they’re protecting me.””
He looked hurt.
But he didn’t argue.
I walked toward the nearest shelf.
A folder sat on top.
My name was written on it.
RYAN HAYES.
My hands went numb.
I opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Me as a child.
My parents.
My school records.
My entire life.
But underneath those were documents I didn’t recognize.
Bank transfers.
Names.
Dates.
And one photograph that made my stomach turn.
It was Emma.
Holding baby Mia.
And standing beside her was Claire.
They were outside a hospital.
The date was six years ago.
Before Lily was born.
I looked at my father.
“She knew.””
He didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“She knew about Mia before she married me.””
“Yes.””
The pain was different now.
Before, I thought Claire had made one terrible choice.
Now I realized she had built our entire marriage on top of a secret.
I opened another document.
A letter.
The handwriting looked familiar.
Emma’s.
I read the first line.
Ryan, if you are reading this, it means I failed to keep Mia safe.
My vision blurred.
I continued.
I wanted to tell you the truth. I wanted you to know your daughter. But every time I tried, someone stopped me.
I looked at my father.
He looked away.
The letter continued.
The person you trust most is the person who knows how to hurt you the most.
I stopped.
My heart pounded.
I turned the page.
The next sentence was underlined.
Ryan, do not believe everything Claire tells you.
I closed the folder.
I couldn’t breathe.
“Dad.””
He didn’t respond.
“Did Emma write this?””
“Yes.””
“And you saw it?””
“Yes.””
“And you still let me marry Claire?””
His silence was devastating.
I pushed the folder against his chest.
“How could you?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was wrong.””
The honesty surprised me.
He sat down on an old wooden chair.
“I spent my whole life believing I could fix problems by controlling them.””
He looked around the room.
“I thought I could protect you from pain.””
He shook his head.
“But I only made sure you discovered all of it at once.””
I looked away.
For the first time that night, I saw my father not as the villain.
But as another person who had made unforgivable choices.
A noise came from above.
A door closing.
I froze.
“Claire?””
No answer.
I ran toward the stairs.
My father followed.
When we reached the bedroom, the room was empty.
My blood turned cold.
“Mia?””
Nothing.
“Claire?””
No response.
The hidden room door was open.
The blanket inside had been moved.
I stepped closer.
Then I saw something on the bed.
A note.
My hands shook as I picked it up.
Only three words were written.
*I found her first.*
I looked around.
The room felt suddenly much smaller.
“Who took them?””
My father picked up the note.
His face changed.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“Ryan…”
“What?””
His voice was barely audible.
“This handwriting.””
I grabbed the paper.
“What about it?””
My father stared at the letters.
Then he whispered:
“It’s your mother’s.””
I froze.
“That’s impossible.””
He looked terrified.
“Your mother died.””
“Yes.””
“Then how did she write this?””
Neither of us had an answer.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
There was a picture attached.
My breath stopped.
It showed Claire.
Standing outside.
Holding Mia’s hand.
And beside them was a woman whose face was hidden in the darkness.
Under the picture was a message.
*You wanted the truth, Ryan. Now come and meet the woman who started all of this.*
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
One sentence.
May you like
One sentence that made my entire body go cold.
*Your mother is waiting for you.*
