Chapter 3: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
For five seconds, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Claire.
Not even Mia.
The entire world seemed trapped inside that one sentence.
I need you to get Mia out of that house before Claire finds out I’m still alive.
I pressed the phone tighter against my ear.
My mind refused to understand what I had just heard.
“Emma?””
My voice came out as a whisper.
On the other end, there was a shaky breath.
“Yes.””
I looked at Claire.
Her face had gone completely white.
She didn’t ask who it was.
She already knew.
And that scared me more than anything.
“How are you alive?”” I asked.
There was silence.
Then Emma said quietly:
“Because I had to disappear.””
The words sent a chill through me.
I stepped away from Claire and walked into the hallway.
“Where are you?””
“I can’t tell you.””
“Emma, you called me.””
“Because Mia is running out of time.””
My grip tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Before she could answer, I heard a noise.
A cough.
A weak, painful cough.
My heart dropped.
“Are you sick?””
Emma didn’t respond.
“Emma?””
“I’m still sick, Ryan.””
The anger inside me mixed with something else.
Something I hated admitting.
Fear.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her voice cracked.
“Because I didn’t know if I could trust you.””
The words hurt.
After everything I had just learned, they hurt more than I expected.
“You didn’t trust me?””
“No.””
A pause.
“I trusted the man you were. I didn’t trust the life Claire built around you.””
I looked back toward the bedroom.
Claire was standing near the wall.
Listening.
Watching.
Mia was holding her stuffed rabbit, confused by the tension surrounding her.
“What did Claire do?”” I asked.
Emma became silent.
Then she said:
“Ask her about the letter.””
I looked at Claire.
“What letter?””
Her expression changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
She knew exactly what Emma meant.
“Ryan—”
“No.””
I raised my hand.
“Don’t explain yet.””
I focused on the phone.
“Emma, where are you?””
“I can’t stay on the phone.””
“Wait.””
“Ryan, listen to me.””
Her voice became urgent.
“Mia knows you. She has known your name her whole life. But she has also spent her whole life being told that you abandoned her.””
I closed my eyes.
The sentence cut deeper than I expected.
“She thinks I left her?””
“Yes.””
I looked toward the hidden room.
Mia was watching me.
Like she was trying to understand whether I was really staying.
“Why?””
Emma whispered:
“Because Claire needed her to believe that.””
The call ended.
I stood there holding my phone.
The silence afterward felt heavier than the conversation.
Then I turned around.
“Letter.””
Claire looked away.
“Ryan…”
“Where is it?””
She didn’t answer.
“Where is the letter?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I destroyed it.””
The honesty shocked me.
For a moment, I couldn’t speak.
“You destroyed a letter from Emma?””
“Yes.””
“A letter that could have told me I had a daughter?””
“Yes.””
I stared at my wife.
The woman I had shared my life with.
The woman who knew what I wanted for dinner.
The woman who held my hand when my father died.
The woman who kissed me every morning.
And somehow she had hidden an entire human being from me.
“Why?””
Claire wiped her cheeks.
“Because when Emma came to me, I thought she was trying to ruin my life.””
“She was pregnant.””
“I know.””
“She had my child.””
“I know!””
Her voice broke.
For the first time, she sounded angry.
Not at me.
At herself.
“I know what I did.””
“Do you?””
I stepped closer.
“Do you know what it feels like to realize you missed six years of your child’s life?””
Claire looked down.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice became quieter.
“You got to watch Lily grow up.””
That made her cry harder.
“You saw her first steps.””
Silence.
“You heard her first words.””
Silence.
“You knew every little thing about her.””
I looked toward Mia.
“But another child was sleeping behind a wall in my house.””
Claire covered her mouth.
“I’m sorry.””
The apology felt painfully small.
I turned away.
Then I heard a tiny voice.
“Daddy?””
I looked toward Mia.
She was standing in the doorway.
Her blanket was wrapped around her shoulders.
“What?””
She looked nervous.
“Are you leaving?””
That question stopped me.
Because it wasn’t just a child asking if her father was leaving a room.
It was a child asking if she was about to be abandoned again.
I walked toward her.
“No.””
She studied my face.
“Promise?””
I swallowed.
“I promise I’m not leaving you.””
She nodded slowly.
Then she asked:
“Can Lily stay too?””
I froze.
“Why?””
She looked toward Lily’s room.
“Because she’s the only person who knew I was here.””
The guilt hit me.
My daughter.
Four years old.
She had discovered a hidden child and instead of being afraid, she brought her food.
She kept her company.
She protected her.
I knelt beside Mia.
“Did Lily know everything?””
Mia shook her head.
“No.””
“What did she know?””
“She said I looked hungry.””
My heart broke.
“She found me when the wall was open.””
“The wall was open?””
Mia nodded.
“After the storm.””
I looked at Claire.
She looked confused.
“What storm?””
I turned back.
“When did this happen?””
Mia counted on her fingers.
“Three weeks ago.””
Three weeks.
For three weeks, a child had been living inside my daughter’s room.
And my wife had somehow hidden it.
I looked at Claire.
“You knew.””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“You knew for three weeks.””
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
Her eyes dropped.
“I don’t know.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You don’t know?””
“I was scared.””
“You were scared.””
I repeated the words.
“You always say that.””
Claire flinched.
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You weren’t scared of me.””
She looked up.
“You were scared of losing control.””
The accusation hung between us.
Because she couldn’t deny it.
A loud crash suddenly came from downstairs.
All of us froze.
I looked toward the staircase.
“Did you invite someone here?””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
Another sound.
The front door.
Opening.
My body went tense.
“Who else knows about this?””
Claire’s face changed.
Nobody answered.
Then a man’s voice echoed from downstairs.
“Claire?””
My blood turned cold.
She recognized the voice.
I saw it in her eyes.
“Who is that?””
She didn’t respond.
The man called again.
“Claire, I know you’re home.””
Mia immediately grabbed my hand.
Her fingers trembled.
“Daddy.””
I looked down.
“What?””
She whispered:
“That’s the man Mommy told me to hide from.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
I looked at Claire.
“What man?””
She looked terrified.
Not guilty.
Not caught.
Terrified.
The footsteps moved closer.
Slow.
Confident.
Like whoever was coming upstairs knew exactly where they were going.
Claire whispered:
“Ryan…”
I stared at her.
“Who is coming into my house?””
Her lips trembled.
May you like
And then she said the name that made me realize Claire’s secret had never been only about Mia.
“Your father.””
