Amused

Chapter 9: The Fall of a Family

The name on the document was Richard Whitmore.

Vanessa’s father.

Not Diane.

Not Harold.

Richard.

I read the page again.

My hands felt numb.

“Your father?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He took over after my grandfather died.””

I looked at her.

“And you knew?””

“No.””

She wiped her face.

“I found out recently.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone always finds out after the damage is done.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she said:

“There’s something else.””

I already hated those words.

“What?””

“My father wasn’t just helping Michael.””

She swallowed.

“He was trying to take over Bennett Industrial himself.””

I looked at the documents.

A plan.

Years of planning.

Hidden accounts.

Fake reports.

Manipulated contracts.

The Whitmores weren’t just protecting Michael’s secret.

They were preparing to steal everything after he died.

My father read the documents later that night.

His reaction was not anger.

It was sadness.

“Richard was young when I knew him.””

“You knew him?””

He nodded.

“He was Harold’s son.””

“The same Harold who helped Michael?””

“Yes.””

My father looked at the papers.

“He watched his father gain power by betraying people.””

“And became the same person.””

My father sighed.

“Some people inherit money.””

He looked at me.

“Others inherit greed.””

The next morning, Olivia helped us prepare everything.

Lawyers.

Evidence.

Documents.

For the first time, I saw my father step into the world he had avoided.

The billionaire world.

The world of boardrooms and cameras.

But something surprised me.

He hated it.

During the press conference, reporters shouted questions.

“Mr. Bennett, is it true you were the original founder?””

“Did Michael Bennett steal your company?””

“Were the Whitmore family involved?””

My father walked to the microphone.

The room went quiet.

“I am not here because I want revenge.””

Everyone listened.

“I am here because the truth belongs to everyone affected by the lies.””

The evidence was released.

The investigation began.

And within days, everything changed.

Richard Whitmore resigned from every position.

The Whitmore family name disappeared from business headlines.

Diane stopped answering calls.

The same people who once surrounded them suddenly vanished.

Power has a strange smell.

Everyone notices when it disappears.

One evening, Vanessa came to my father’s workshop.

She stood outside for several minutes before knocking.

My father opened the door.

“Vanessa.””

She looked nervous.

“Can I talk to Daniel?””

I stepped outside.

We stood where my father used to park his old truck.

“I’m leaving.””

I looked at her.

“Where?””

“Somewhere away from all of this.””

She smiled sadly.

“I need to figure out who I am without my family’s name.””

I nodded.

“That’s probably a good thing.””

She looked at me.

“Do you hate me?””

The question surprised me.

I thought about it.

“No.””

Her eyes filled.

“But I can’t trust you.””

She nodded.

“I understand.””

A long silence passed.

Then she said:

“You know what hurts the most?””

“What?””

“I really did love you.””

I looked away.

“Maybe.””

She smiled sadly.

“Maybe?””

“Maybe you loved me.””

I looked at her.

“But you loved what came with me too.””

She accepted that.

Because she knew it was true.

Before she left, she turned.

“Daniel?””

“Yeah?””

“Your father is lucky.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because he spent his whole life building something.””

She smiled faintly.

“And the one thing he built that nobody can steal…”

She looked toward the workshop.

“Was you.””

Months later, my father and I stood inside the Bennett Industrial headquarters.

The same building that had once been taken from him.

The board waited.

The employees waited.

The world waited.

My father looked at me.

“Are you ready?””

I nodded.

But before we entered the room, Olivia ran toward us.

Her face was pale.

“Mr. Bennett.””

My father turned.

“What happened?””

She handed him a document.

“A final update from Michael Bennett’s estate.””

My father opened it.

His expression changed.

“What is it?””

He read silently.

Then handed it to me.

I looked down.

And my heart stopped.

Because Michael had left one final message.

Not for my father.

Not for the company.

For me.

The first line said:

Daniel,

If you are reading this, then you finally know the truth.

But the second line made my blood run cold.

Because it said:

May you like

Your father was never my victim.

He was my protector.
