Amused

Chapter 2: The Name Behind the Jacket

Nobody spoke.

Not one person.

The woman kneeling in front of my father slowly stood.

Her name was Olivia Hart.

She was the wedding planner Vanessa’s family had hired because she organized celebrity events and billionaire galas.

I had met her only twice.

She had always been calm.

Professional.

Impossible to shake.

But now she looked nervous standing beside my father.

That alone told me something was wrong.

Or maybe something was very, very important.

Diane stared at Olivia.

“What did you just call him?””

Olivia looked confused.

“Mr. Bennett?””

Diane’s face tightened.

“No. Before that.””

Olivia glanced at my father.

“The chairman?””

A wave moved through the room.

Whispers.

Questions.

Confusion.

My father sighed.

“Olivia, this is not the place.””

But Olivia shook her head.

“Sir, I’m sorry. But after what just happened, they need to understand.””

Diane laughed nervously.

“Understand what?””

Olivia opened the folder.

“The reason the board has been waiting is because Mr. Bennett is the controlling shareholder of Bennett Industrial Group.””

Silence.

I heard someone drop a glass.

Bennett Industrial Group.

The name was familiar.

Everyone knew it.

A company worth billions.

A company that built medical equipment used across the country.

A company whose founder appeared on magazine covers.

But that founder’s face had never interested me.

Because my father had never talked about it.

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

He just looked tired.

Like he had carried a secret for too long.

Diane’s expression became pale.

“That’s impossible.””

Olivia looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because Arthur Bennett is a mechanic.””

My father smiled sadly.

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“I was.””

Diane stepped forward.

“You expect us to believe this?””

Olivia handed her the folder.

Inside were documents.

Official documents.

Signatures.

Photographs.

My father’s name.

Richard, Vanessa’s father, moved closer.

“Diane…”

She ignored him.

“This is some kind of mistake.””

My father looked at her.

“No mistake.””

His voice remained calm.

“I started the company thirty years ago.””

The room became louder.

Guests whispered.

Phones appeared.

People searched his name.

I watched strangers who had ignored my father moments earlier suddenly straighten their backs.

Suddenly, the worn jacket looked different.

Suddenly, the old shoes looked different.

But I noticed something.

My father didn’t look proud.

He looked disappointed.

Not because they discovered his wealth.

Because they only respected him after discovering it.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Daniel…”

I looked at her.

She looked terrified.

Not because she had hurt me.

Because she had just realized who she had insulted.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”” she whispered.

I laughed quietly.

The sound surprised even me.

“Tell you what?””

“That your father…”

She stopped.

She couldn’t even say it.

“That my father was successful?””

She looked away.

“No. I mean…”

“You mean you would have treated him differently?””

She didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

My father touched my shoulder.

“Daniel, I never told Vanessa because I wanted to know if she loved you.””

Those words hurt more than anything.

Because I suddenly wondered if he had already suspected something.

Diane stepped forward.

“Arthur, we apologize.””

Everyone looked at her.

She forced a smile.

“There was a misunderstanding.””

My father looked at her.

“No.””

The smile disappeared.

“There wasn’t.””

He looked around the ballroom.

“You saw exactly what you wanted to see.””

Diane swallowed.

“Arthur…”

“You saw an old jacket and decided you knew the person wearing it.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my father turned to me.

“I’m sorry, son.””

“For what?””

“For bringing this into your wedding day.””

I shook my head.

“You didn’t.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Someone else did.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel, please.””

I stepped back.

“I need answers.””

Before she could respond, Olivia’s phone rang.

She answered quickly.

“Yes?””

Her face changed.

She looked at my father.

Then at me.

“Mr. Bennett…”

“What is it?””

She hesitated.

“The board found something.””

My father frowned.

“What?””

Olivia lowered her voice.

“It’s about the Whitmore family.””

Diane’s face went completely still.

My father looked at her.

May you like

And for the first time that night…

He looked angry.
