Amused

Chapter 4: The Wedding That Never Happened

The next hour changed my entire life.

The wedding decorations remained.

The flowers remained.

The cake remained.

But the wedding was over.

Nobody said it.

Nobody needed to.

Vanessa knew.

I knew.

Everyone knew.

I walked outside the ballroom and stood beneath the cold night air.

For the first time all day, I could breathe.

My father followed.

“You okay?””

I laughed softly.

“What a strange question.””

He smiled sadly.

“I know.””

I looked at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

He leaned against the wall.

“Because money changes people.””

“I’m not people.””

He looked at me.

“You’re my son.””

That answer hurt.

Because it was exactly who he was.

He never wanted me to become someone who measured love by status.

“I thought Vanessa was different,” I said.

My father was quiet.

“So did I.””

A few minutes later, Vanessa came outside.

Alone.

Her makeup was ruined.

Her confidence was gone.

“Daniel.””

I didn’t answer.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“For what?””

“For everything.””

I waited.

She cried.

“My mother pressured me.””

“That’s not an excuse.””

“I know.””

“Then why did you do it?””

She looked down.

“Because I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“Of losing the life I thought I deserved.””

The honesty shocked me.

She continued.

“When I met you, I didn’t know about your father. I loved how simple your life was.””

I stared.

“Past tense?””

She closed her eyes.

“I don’t know anymore.””

That hurt.

More than anger would have.

Because she was finally admitting she didn’t know if she loved me without the fantasy.

“I need the truth,” I said.

She nodded.

“My mother told me to get close to you.””

The world stopped.

“What?””

“She knew your father owned the company.””

My heart sank.

“But I didn’t at first.””

“When did you find out?””

She whispered:

“Two weeks after we started dating.””

Two weeks.

She knew.

She knew before I fell in love.

Before I proposed.

Before I planned this day.

“Why stay?””

Tears rolled down her face.

“Because I did love you.””

I looked away.

“Did?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Behind us, the ballroom doors opened.

Diane walked out.

She looked different.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Afraid.

“Arthur wants to speak with you,” she said.

I turned.

“My father?””

She nodded.

“He has something to show you.””

I followed her inside.

My father stood near the stage.

The same stage where I was supposed to say my vows.

Now he held a document.

“Daniel.””

I walked closer.

“What is it?””

He handed it to me.

I read the first page.

My name.

My signature.

My inheritance agreement.

“What is this?””

My father looked at Vanessa.

Then Diane.

Then me.

“This was supposed to be given to you after your wedding.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because I wanted to make sure you chose your own life.””

I kept reading.

Then I saw it.

A clause.

A condition.

My eyes widened.

“What does this mean?””

My father’s expression was serious.

“It means if you married someone who only wanted my money…”

He paused.

“They would receive nothing.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

Then my father pointed to another page.

“But that’s not the worst part.””

My stomach tightened.

“What else?””

He turned the document around.

There was a signature.

A signature I recognized.

Vanessa’s.

My voice became quiet.

“Why is her name on this?””

Nobody answered.

May you like

Then my father said:

“Because Vanessa tried to change the agreement before today.””
