Chapter 3: The Secret Vanessa Hid
The ballroom was no longer a wedding venue.
It was a courtroom.
Everyone was watching.
Everyone was waiting.
And I was standing in the middle of it, realizing the woman I was supposed to marry might have been hiding something much bigger than I ever imagined.
“Olivia,” my father said quietly.
“Tell me.””
She opened the folder again.
“There was an investigation.””
Diane immediately interrupted.
“This is ridiculous.””
Olivia didn’t even look at her.
“Bennett Industrial Group has been reviewing several partnership agreements.””
My father’s eyes narrowed.
“And?””
Olivia took a breath.
“One of the companies connected to the Whitmore family submitted false financial reports.””
The room erupted.
Richard looked shocked.
“Diane?””
She turned on him.
“Don’t.””
My heart raced.
Vanessa looked between her parents.
“What is she talking about?””
Nobody answered.
My father looked at Vanessa.
“Did you know?””
Her face changed.
That was enough.
“Vanessa.””
She looked down.
“Daniel…”
My chest tightened.
“How long?””
She wiped her eyes.
“I didn’t know everything.””
“That wasn’t my question.””
She whispered:
“Six months.””
Six months.
Six months while we planned a wedding.
Six months while I told her about my fears.
My dreams.
My future.
And she had kept this from me.
“What were you going to do?”” I asked.
She cried.
“I thought it would get fixed.””
“Fixed?””
My voice rose.
“You thought your family committing fraud would just disappear?””
Diane stepped forward.
“Watch your tone.””
I turned.
“No.””
The word surprised everyone.
“No, I’m done watching my tone.””
I pointed toward my father.
“That man walked into this room with a gift because he wanted to celebrate me.””
My voice shook.
“And your first instinct was to humiliate him.””
Diane crossed her arms.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
My father looked at her.
“I know more than you think.””
The air changed.
“What does that mean?”” Richard asked.
My father reached into his jacket pocket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
The same kind of envelope he had carried all evening.
He looked at me.
“Your gift.””
I stared.
“You still brought it?””
He nodded.
“I wanted to give it to you privately.””
He handed it to me.
Inside was a letter.
And a key.
I looked confused.
“What is this?””
My father smiled faintly.
“Something your grandfather gave me.””
I opened the letter.
The handwriting was old.
My grandfather’s handwriting.
Daniel,
A person’s value is never measured by what they own. It is measured by what they protect.
My father’s words blurred.
Then I saw the next line.
Your father built something great, but his greatest achievement was becoming a good father.
I looked up.
My father’s eyes were wet.
“I wanted you to have that today.””
I closed the letter.
For a moment, the noise disappeared.
Then Olivia spoke again.
“Mr. Bennett.””
We turned.
“There’s more.””
She looked uncomfortable.
“The investigation also discovered that someone attempted to access confidential company information through your son’s account.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
My father looked at her.
“Who?””
Olivia slowly turned toward Vanessa.
Nobody moved.
Vanessa’s face lost all color.
“Daniel…”
I stepped back.
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You have to believe me.””
“Do I?””
She started crying.
“I never wanted this.””
“Then what did you want?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because the answer was already there.
My father looked at me.
“Son.””
I looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
“For what?””
He glanced toward Vanessa.
“For not warning you sooner.””
Then Olivia’s phone buzzed again.
She checked it.
Her eyes widened.
“Mr. Bennett…”
“What now?””
She looked directly at me.
“The person who accessed your account…”
She paused.
“They didn’t just steal information.””
My hands went cold.
“What did they do?””
Olivia swallowed.
“They transferred ownership of something.””
The ballroom went silent.
“Ownership of what?””
She looked at the papers.
May you like
Then said:
“Your entire inheritance.””
