Chapter 9: The Truth Beneath Saint Mary's
The drive to Saint Mary's felt endless.
Every red light.
Every turn.
Every second.
It all felt like something standing between me and my daughter.
My daughter.
That word still felt strange.
Not because I didn't believe it.
Because I couldn't understand how someone could exist for six years and leave no space in my life.
Olivia had a favorite color.
A favorite food.
A favorite song.
She had fears.
Dreams.
Questions.
And I knew none of them.
I looked at the passenger seat.
The hospital bracelet from the old Carter house sat there.
*Amelia Carter.*
The name haunted me.
A child they erased.
A child everyone had been hiding.
But now there was something else.
My mother.
Diane.
The woman who had raised me.
The woman who had held my hand when I was sick.
The woman who had made me believe she was protecting my family.
She had taken Olivia.
And I still didn't know why.
Beside me, Clara sat silently.
After several minutes, I spoke.
"Tell me the truth.""
She looked at me.
"About what?""
"Everything.""
Her expression tightened.
"I thought you wanted to wait.""
"I waited my entire life.""
She looked away.
"You deserve the truth.""
I gripped the steering wheel.
"Then start with Amelia.""
Clara took a breath.
"Amelia was born the same night as Olivia and Sophie.""
"How?""
"Her mother was another patient.""
"Who?""
Clara hesitated.
"Someone connected to your family.""
My jaw tightened.
"Everyone is connected.""
She looked at me.
"Her name was Sarah.""
The name meant nothing.
"Who was Sarah?""
Clara stared out the window.
"Your father's first wife.""
My foot almost lifted off the gas.
"What?""
"Before your mother.""
The words landed slowly.
"My father was married before Diane?""
"Yes.""
I shook my head.
"That doesn't make sense.""
"Your father never talked about it.""
"No.""
I thought back.
My father never talked about many things.
His past.
His childhood.
His first marriage.
Nothing.
"What happened to Sarah?""
Clara looked down.
"She died during childbirth.""
Silence.
"And Amelia?""
Clara's voice became softer.
"She survived.""
I stared ahead.
"Then why was she erased?""
"Because of a legal battle.""
"Between who?""
"Your father and Diane.""
My chest tightened.
"My mother?""
Clara nodded.
"Diane wanted control of the Carter family fortune.""
I frowned.
"What does that have to do with a baby?""
"Everything.""
The hospital appeared ahead.
Its lights cut through the night.
Clara continued.
"Amelia was your father's only biological child from his first marriage.""
I understood.
And I hated that I understood.
"If Amelia existed...""
"She would inherit.""
I swallowed.
"So Diane hid her.""
Clara nodded.
"She convinced everyone Amelia had died.""
My hands tightened.
"And my father knew?""
"Yes.""
"Then why didn't he tell me?""
Clara looked at me.
"Because he was afraid.""
I laughed quietly.
"Everyone was afraid.""
She didn't disagree.
We arrived at Saint Mary's.
I parked and immediately got out.
Inside, the hospital smelled exactly like every hospital.
Clean floors.
Cold air.
Silent hallways.
But for me, this place felt like the beginning of every lie.
Rachel was waiting near the emergency room entrance.
The second she saw me, she ran forward.
"Ryan.""
"Where is Olivia?""
She pointed down the hallway.
"She's with a doctor.""
"Is she hurt?""
Rachel shook her head.
"Physically, no.""
I stopped.
"But?""
Rachel's eyes filled with tears.
"She is terrified.""
The words hurt.
A child terrified because adults had failed her.
"Where is Diane?""
Rachel looked away.
"Police have her.""
I froze.
"What?""
"She was found with Olivia.""
My heart pounded.
"Take me to her.""
Rachel grabbed my arm.
"Ryan.""
I looked at her.
"Before you see Diane, you need to understand something.""
"What?""
Rachel swallowed.
"Olivia didn't run away because she hated you.""
I felt my throat tighten.
"Then why?""
"Because she thought you hated her.""
I closed my eyes.
That sentence hurt more than anything.
Rachel continued.
"She kept asking if her father would be angry.""
I whispered:
"I'm not angry at her.""
"I know.""
Rachel looked at me.
"But she doesn't.""
I walked toward the room.
Before I entered, I heard a voice.
A small voice.
"Am I in trouble?""
I stopped.
Olivia.
I opened the door slowly.
She was sitting on the hospital bed.
Small.
Fragile.
Holding the same stuffed rabbit from the basement.
The second she saw me, her eyes widened.
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Then she looked down.
"I'm sorry.""
My heart broke.
I walked closer.
"Why are you sorry?""
She shrugged.
"Because I caused problems.""
I sat beside her.
"No.""
She looked at me.
"You didn't.""
"Mommy said I ruined everything.""
I felt tears burn my eyes.
I looked at my daughter.
"Olivia.""
She stared.
"You didn't ruin anything.""
Her lips trembled.
"Are you really my daddy?""
I nodded.
"Yes.""
"Even though you didn't know me?""
The question destroyed me.
I swallowed.
"Especially because I didn't know you.""
She looked confused.
I took her hand.
"I missed six years.""
A tear rolled down my face.
"But that wasn't because I didn't want you.""
She stared at me.
"It wasn't your fault.""
A small sound escaped her.
Like she had been holding that question inside for years.
Then she leaned forward.
And hugged me.
I held my daughter for the first time.
And I promised myself one thing.
Nobody would ever make her feel unwanted again.
After a few minutes, she pulled back.
"Daddy?""
"Yes?""
"Grandma said something before we left.""
My body went still.
"What?""
Olivia looked afraid.
"She said you would find out eventually.""
"Find out what?""
She looked toward the door.
"She said Amelia wasn't the only secret.""
My heart sank.
"Olivia...""
She whispered:
"She said Lily isn't your daughter.""
The room became silent.
I stared.
"No.""
Olivia immediately shook her head.
"I'm sorry.""
"No.""
I stood up.
Not angry at Olivia.
Never at her.
But terrified.
Because another lie was waiting.
Another secret.
I found Clara in the hallway.
She saw my face.
"What happened?""
I looked at her.
"Is Lily my daughter?""
Clara froze.
And that was the answer before she spoke.
"Ryan...""
"No.""
I stepped closer.
"Not another secret.""
She looked down.
"I don't know.""
My chest tightened.
"What do you mean you don't know?""
Clara whispered:
"Because the original records from that night...""
She stopped.
"What?""
"They showed something different.""
The hallway seemed to spin.
"Different how?""
Clara looked at me.
"The DNA tests were never completed.""
I stared.
"But I raised Lily.""
"Yes.""
"She calls me Dad.""
"Yes.""
"Then why?""
Clara took a breath.
"Because someone switched the hospital samples.""
I felt cold.
"Who?""
She didn't answer.
Because she already knew.
And I did too.
The same person.
The person who had been controlling everything.
My mother.
Diane.
A nurse approached us.
"Mr. Carter?""
I turned.
"Yes?""
She handed me an envelope.
"Someone left this for you.""
"Who?""
The nurse looked confused.
"Your mother.""
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was one page.
Only one sentence.
*Ryan, if you want the truth about which children are yours, come to the basement where this all started.*
I stared at the message.
Then at Clara.
Then toward Olivia's room.
Because suddenly I understood.
The basement wasn't where the secrets began.
It was where my mother had hidden the evidence.
I folded the note.
And for the first time, I wasn't chasing answers.
I was going to confront the person who created the questions.
Diane had spent six years hiding the truth.
Now I was going to make her reveal all of it.
But as I turned to leave, Olivia grabbed my hand.
"Daddy.""
I looked back.
Her eyes were full of fear.
"Don't go alone.""
I knelt beside her.
"Why?""
She whispered:
"Because Grandma said...""
A pause.
"Because Grandma said the last person who found the truth disappeared.""
I froze.
And suddenly, I remembered.
My father.
The man who vanished eight years ago.
The man who had been hiding.
The man who had known.
I looked at Clara.
She was already pale.
Because she understood too.
Diane hadn't just hidden secrets.
She had removed anyone who tried to expose them.
May you like
And now...
she was waiting for me.
