Chapter 4: The Man Who Knew Before Me
My brother stood in the doorway like he belonged there.
Like this was his house.
Like he had every right to walk into the middle of my life and watch it collapse.
Mark.
My older brother.
The person I had defended my entire childhood.
The person I trusted when my father left.
The person who gave me my first job.
The person who stood beside me at my wedding.
And now he was standing there while my wife looked at him with a fear I had never seen before.
Nobody spoke.
Not me.
Not Emma.
Not Diane.
Not even Mark.
Then Lily whispered:
"Daddy… who is that?""
I looked at my daughter.
Then back at my brother.
"I don't know anymore.""
The words came out before I could stop them.
Mark's face changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
Guilt.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Guilt.
"You weren't supposed to be home yet.""
My hands curled into fists.
That sentence.
Everyone kept saying that sentence.
Like my early return was the problem.
Like the truth only existed because I accidentally walked through the door.
"What did you mean?""
Mark stepped inside.
The front door closed behind him.
"I mean you weren't supposed to find out like this.""
My anger exploded.
"Find out what?""
No answer.
I walked toward him.
"That my wife has been hiding a child?""
Mark looked away.
"Ryan.""
"That my mother knew?""
"Ryan—"
"That you knew?""
The silence was deafening.
I laughed softly.
A broken sound.
"Of course you knew.""
Emma looked at me.
"Ryan, listen.""
I turned toward her.
"No.""
My voice was shaking.
"Everybody keeps telling me to listen. I have spent years listening.""
I pointed around the room.
"I listened when you said everything was fine.""
I looked at Diane.
"I listened when you said my mother was just strict.""
Then Mark.
"I listened when you said family always tells each other the truth.""
I stepped back.
"And apparently I was the only person who believed that.""
Mark lowered his eyes.
For once, my brother had nothing clever to say.
No joke.
No explanation.
No way to make the situation smaller.
Because it wasn't small.
It was my entire life.
Sophie appeared at the bottom of the stairs.
She was holding Lily's hand.
The sight almost destroyed me.
Two little girls.
Both innocent.
Both caught in a nightmare created by adults.
Mark saw Sophie.
His face changed.
"She's grown so much.""
My head snapped toward him.
"You've seen her?""
He didn't answer.
"Have you seen her before?""
Mark looked at Emma.
That was enough.
"You have.""
My voice became quiet.
"When?""
Mark took a breath.
"Many times.""
The room spun.
"Many times?""
"I was trying to help.""
I stared at him.
"Help who?""
No answer.
"Sophie?""
His face tightened.
"Ryan—"
"Help Sophie?""
Mark looked toward the little girl.
The guilt returned.
"Yes.""
I nodded slowly.
"Then why was she locked in my basement?""
Nobody spoke.
I turned toward Emma.
"Why was she locked in my basement?""
Emma crossed her arms.
"You don't understand the situation.""
I almost couldn't believe those words.
"Stop saying that.""
"Ryan—"
"No.""
I stepped closer.
"Every person in this house keeps saying I don't understand.""
I pointed toward Sophie.
"But nobody explains why a six-year-old child was sleeping next to boxes in the dark.""
Emma's eyes hardened.
"Because she wasn't safe.""
The words shocked me.
"What?""
"She wasn't safe with you.""
I stared at her.
"With me?""
"Not because of you.""
"Then explain.""
Emma looked at Mark.
And I saw something pass between them.
A silent conversation.
A decision.
A warning.
I turned toward my brother.
"What aren't you telling me?""
Mark rubbed his face.
"Ryan, this is complicated.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"It's simple.""
I pointed toward Sophie.
"Either you protect a child or you don't.""
Mark closed his eyes.
Then he whispered:
"Sophie was born from a mistake.""
Emma looked down.
"A mistake?""
I repeated.
Mark swallowed.
"Six years ago, before you and Emma moved into this house...""
He stopped.
I waited.
My heart already knew the answer.
But my brain refused to accept it.
"Before we moved?""
Mark looked at me.
"Emma and I had a relationship.""
The world went silent.
I didn't hear anything.
Not the clock.
Not the house.
Not even Lily crying softly beside me.
I just stared at my brother.
"What?""
Emma immediately stepped forward.
"Ryan—"
"No.""
I raised my hand.
My eyes never left Mark.
"You and my wife?""
Mark nodded once.
The smallest movement.
The most painful one.
"When?""
"Before your wedding.""
My stomach dropped.
Before my wedding.
Before I promised Emma forever.
Before I stood beside my brother and called him family.
"You were with her while I was planning my wedding?""
Mark looked sick.
"It ended before you married her.""
"Did it?""
Silence.
I looked at Emma.
She couldn't meet my eyes.
That was all I needed.
"Did it end before we got married?""
Emma whispered:
"Ryan...""
"Answer me.""
Her lips trembled.
"No.""
The word barely existed.
But I heard it.
My knees felt weak.
Lily ran toward me.
"Daddy?""
I immediately bent down and hugged her.
Because no matter what happened next, she needed me.
She needed one person in this house who wasn't lying.
I held her tightly.
And then I looked at Sophie.
The little girl who had been calling me Daddy.
"Is she mine?""
Nobody answered.
I looked at Mark.
"Is Sophie my daughter?""
Mark's eyes filled with tears.
"I don't know.""
I froze.
"You don't know?""
"There was a test.""
Emma looked at him sharply.
"Mark.""
I turned.
"What test?""
Nobody spoke.
"WHAT TEST?""
My voice echoed.
Diane grabbed the edge of the table.
"Ryan...""
I looked at my mother.
"You knew too?""
Her silence was devastating.
"You knew?""
Diane started crying.
"I found out later.""
"How much later?""
"After Sophie was born.""
I stared at the three people in front of me.
My wife.
My brother.
My mother.
The three people closest to me.
The three people who built a wall around the truth.
"Why?""
My voice cracked.
"Why did nobody tell me?""
Emma whispered:
"Because we didn't know what you would do.""
I looked at her.
"What I would do?""
She stepped forward.
"You would have taken her away.""
"Yes.""
I didn't hesitate.
"Because she was a child.""
Emma looked toward Sophie.
"You don't understand what happened.""
"Then make me understand.""
She went silent.
I looked at Mark.
"What happened?""
My brother stared at the floor.
Then he said:
"Sophie wasn't the only thing we hid.""
A chill moved through me.
"What does that mean?""
Mark looked at Emma.
Emma shook her head.
"Don't.""
But Mark continued.
"Ryan… the night Sophie was born, there was another baby.""
My heart stopped.
"What?""
Diane covered her mouth.
Lily looked confused.
I couldn't move.
Another baby?
Mark's voice became quieter.
"Emma gave birth to twins.""
The room seemed to disappear.
I looked at Emma.
She was crying now.
Real tears.
Maybe the first real emotion I had seen from her all day.
"Twins?""
I whispered.
Mark nodded.
"Yes.""
"Where is the other baby?""
Nobody answered.
And that silence was worse than any confession.
I looked at Emma.
"Where is the other baby?""
She wiped her face.
Then she said something that made my entire body go cold.
"The other baby died.""
I exhaled slowly.
A wave of sadness hit me.
Then confusion.
Because Sophie was alive.
So why had she been hidden?
Why had my brother known?
Why had my mother been afraid?
And why did Emma look terrified instead of heartbroken?
I took one step closer.
"Emma.""
She looked at me.
"Tell me the truth.""
Her lips parted.
But before she could speak, my phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
There was a picture attached.
A hospital document.
A birth certificate.
My hands began to shake.
Because the name written on it wasn't Sophie.
It wasn't Lily.
It was another child.
May you like
And beneath the baby's name was one word that made me look up at Emma in horror.
*Alive.*
