Chapter 6: The Daughter I Never Knew
The name stayed on the page.
*Olivia Ryan Carter.*
My name.
My daughter.
A child I had never held.
Never kissed.
Never watched take her first steps.
Never heard call me Daddy.
My eyes moved from the photograph to Emma.
She looked like she had stopped breathing.
"Ryan...""
I couldn't answer.
My throat felt tight.
My hands felt useless.
Six years.
Six years of birthdays.
Six years of wondering why one child was enough.
Six years of believing my family was complete.
And somewhere in the world, there was a little girl carrying my name.
A little girl everyone knew about except me.
I looked at Clara.
"The nurse.""
She nodded.
"My name is Clara Bennett.""
"Why are you here?""
She looked at Emma.
"Because she was never going to tell you.""
Emma immediately stepped forward.
"That's not true.""
Clara looked at her.
"Emma, you had six years.""
The room became silent.
Emma's face tightened.
"You don't know what I went through.""
Clara held the folder closer.
"I was there.""
Those three words changed everything.
I looked between them.
"What happened at Saint Mary's Hospital?""
Clara sat the folder on the table.
"Six years ago, Emma gave birth to twin girls.""
She opened the file.
"The delivery was difficult. Both babies were premature.""
She pulled out two photographs.
Two tiny newborns.
Two lives.
Two children who had started together.
"But one baby was stronger.""
She touched the first picture.
"Olivia.""
Then the second.
"Sophie.""
Sophie stepped closer.
She looked at the pictures.
"That's me?""
Clara nodded gently.
"Yes.""
Sophie stared.
Then she whispered:
"Was I small?""
Clara smiled sadly.
"You were the smallest baby I had ever seen survive.""
Sophie touched the picture.
For the first time since I found her, I saw something other than fear on her face.
Wonder.
I looked at Emma.
"Why didn't I know?""
Emma looked away.
Clara answered.
"Because Emma told the hospital staff that you were not the father.""
My heart stopped.
"What?""
Emma closed her eyes.
"Ryan...""
"No.""
I looked at her.
"Did you?""
She didn't answer.
Clara did.
"She said there was uncertainty.""
I looked at Mark.
My brother looked sick.
The pieces began falling into place.
"Because of him.""
Nobody spoke.
But nobody had to.
Mark looked at me.
"I was wrong.""
A laugh escaped me.
Wrong.
That was the word he chose.
"You destroyed my life.""
"I know.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You don't.""
I pointed at Olivia's picture.
"You don't know what it feels like to look at a child you never knew existed.""
Mark looked down.
"I thought she was going to die.""
"What?""
He swallowed.
"The doctors said Olivia's condition was worse.""
Clara shook her head.
"No.""
Everyone looked at her.
Clara's voice became firm.
"That was never true.""
Emma looked at her.
"Clara.""
"No, Emma.""
The nurse's eyes hardened.
"You need to stop rewriting what happened.""
My heart started pounding.
"What do you mean?""
Clara opened another document.
"Olivia was sick.""
She looked at me.
"But she was not dying.""
I stared.
"Then why did everyone say she was?""
No one answered.
Until Clara said:
"Because Emma wanted a reason to separate the children.""
The room went still.
Emma's face changed.
"You don't understand.""
"Then explain.""
She looked at me.
"I was terrified.""
"Of what?""
She looked toward Mark.
Then away.
"Of losing everything.""
I frowned.
"You already had everything.""
Emma shook her head.
"No.""
Her voice cracked.
"I had a secret.""
I waited.
She wiped her tears.
"When Olivia was born, the doctors asked for the father's information.""
My chest tightened.
"And you gave them Mark's name.""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
The confession hurt even though I expected it.
Because hearing it was different.
She had created a world where my daughter existed without me.
"Then what?""
Emma looked at Sophie.
"I thought if Ryan knew about Mark...""
She stopped.
"Say it.""
"I thought you would leave.""
I stared at her.
"So you hid two children.""
"I thought I could fix it.""
"No.""
My voice was quiet.
"You thought you could control it.""
Emma didn't answer.
Because she knew I was right.
Clara continued.
"After Olivia's condition improved, Emma made a request.""
I looked at her.
"What request?""
Clara's face turned serious.
"She asked that the records be changed.""
My stomach dropped.
"Changed how?""
Clara opened the file.
"She wanted Olivia listed as the child of another family member.""
I looked at Emma.
"Why?""
She whispered:
"Because I couldn't explain.""
"You couldn't explain?""
I stepped closer.
"You had six years.""
Emma started crying.
"I was scared.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
The word came out softly.
"But you weren't scared enough to hurt everyone else.""
The house went silent.
Even Diane looked away.
I looked at Sophie.
"Who raised Olivia?""
Nobody answered.
Then Clara said:
"Someone who loved her.""
I turned.
"Who?""
Clara hesitated.
Then she pulled out another document.
"Olivia was adopted.""
My heart sank.
"Adopted?""
Emma nodded weakly.
"I thought it was the safest option.""
I stared.
"You gave away my daughter.""
"No.""
Emma cried.
"I didn't know how to keep her.""
The anger inside me burned.
"She wasn't yours to give away.""
Emma looked like those words physically hurt.
But I didn't take them back.
Because somewhere, a little girl had grown up without knowing who her father was.
And I had spent years living a lie.
A sound came from behind me.
A small voice.
"Daddy?""
I turned.
Lily was standing there.
Her eyes were wet.
"Are you still my daddy?""
The question broke something inside me.
I immediately dropped to my knees.
"Lily.""
She ran into my arms.
"I don't want another girl to take my daddy.""
I hugged her tightly.
"Oh, sweetheart.""
I looked at Sophie.
She was crying too.
Because she heard.
Because children always understood more than adults thought.
I pulled both girls close.
"No one is taking anyone's place.""
I looked at them.
"Love doesn't work like that.""
Emma watched us.
And for the first time, I saw her realize something.
She had spent years thinking love was a limited thing.
A thing where one person had to lose.
But she was wrong.
The children were never the problem.
The lies were.
My phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice came through.
"Is this Ryan Carter?""
"Yes.""
A pause.
Then:
"I was told you might finally be looking for your daughter.""
My grip tightened.
"Who is this?""
"My name is Rachel.""
I looked at Clara.
She immediately looked confused.
"Rachel who?""
The woman continued.
"I am Olivia's adoptive mother.""
My breath caught.
"I need to speak with her.""
Silence.
Then Rachel said something that made my blood run cold.
"You need to come quickly.""
"Why?""
Her voice trembled.
"Because Olivia found out the truth three days ago.""
I stood completely still.
"How?""
"Someone contacted her.""
"Who?""
Another pause.
Then:
"Your brother.""
I looked at Mark.
His face went pale.
"Mark?""
Rachel whispered:
"He told Olivia that her real father abandoned her.""
My eyes locked onto my brother.
"Why would he do that?""
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then Rachel said:
"Because Olivia is missing.""
The phone slipped slightly in my hand.
"What?""
"She ran away after she found out.""
My heart stopped.
"Where is she?""
Rachel's voice broke.
"We don't know.""
A terrible silence followed.
Then she said:
"But before she disappeared, she left one message.""
I swallowed.
"What message?""
Rachel took a breath.
"She said...""
The line crackled.
Then:
"Tell my father I'm sorry I wasn't the daughter he wanted.""
I closed my eyes.
A child I never knew.
A child who thought I rejected her.
Because of a lie.
I looked at Mark.
And for the first time in my life, I didn't see my brother.
I saw the person who had stolen six years from my daughter.
My voice came out low.
"Where is Olivia?""
Nobody answered.
Then Clara picked up the folder.
She pulled out one final page.
"I know where she might have gone.""
I looked at her.
"Where?""
Clara stared at the address.
Then whispered:
"The old Carter family house.""
My blood went cold.
Because that house had been abandoned for years.
And the last person who lived there...
was my father.
The man who disappeared from my life when I was a child.
The man everyone told me was gone forever.
Clara looked at me.
"Ryan...""
Her voice trembled.
"You need to know something.""
"What?""
She held the paper tighter.
"Olivia didn't run away alone.""
May you like
A pause.
"Someone took her.""
