Amused

Chapter 5: The Baby They Buried

I stared at the document on my phone.

The letters blurred.

I blinked.

Read it again.

Then again.

But the words refused to change.

*Birth Certificate.*

*Twin A.*

*Status: Alive.*

My fingers went numb.

"Ryan?""

Emma's voice sounded distant.

I looked up slowly.

Everyone was watching me.

Everyone except Sophie.

She was staring at the floor.

Like she already knew.

Like she had spent years learning that adults told the truth only when they had no choice.

I turned my phone around.

"Who sent this?""

Nobody answered.

My voice rose.

"Who sent this?""

Mark stepped forward.

"Ryan, let me explain.""

I laughed.

A sharp, empty sound.

"No.""

I held up the phone.

"You have explained nothing.""

I pointed at the document.

"This says another baby was born.""

Silence.

"This says that baby is alive.""

My eyes moved to Emma.

"Where is she?""

Emma's face crumbled.

For the first time since I came home, she looked less like someone hiding a secret and more like someone trapped inside one.

"Ryan...""

"Where is the baby?""

She closed her eyes.

And that tiny movement confirmed what I already knew.

She knew.

She had always known.

My chest tightened.

"You lied to me.""

Emma whispered:

"I was trying to protect you.""

The anger that came out of me surprised even myself.

"Stop saying that.""

The room shook with my voice.

"Stop using those words.""

Emma stepped back.

"You don't understand.""

"No.""

I pointed toward Sophie.

"I understand perfectly.""

The little girl looked up.

"Children were hurt because adults were afraid.""

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Mark.

"You said there was a mistake.""

His face was pale.

"You said Sophie was the result of something that happened before my marriage.""

I held up the phone.

"Then why is there another child?""

Mark swallowed.

"Because Sophie has a sister.""

The words landed harder than I expected.

A sister.

Sophie looked up.

"I have a sister?""

Everyone froze.

Because nobody had considered that she might be listening.

Nobody except me.

I crouched down beside her.

"Sophie.""

She looked at me.

"Do you know about your sister?""

She shook her head slowly.

"No.""

Her voice was barely audible.

"Mommy told me I was the reason everything went wrong.""

My heart broke.

I looked at Emma.

She looked away.

"Did you tell her that?""

Emma whispered:

"No.""

But Sophie immediately spoke.

"Yes.""

The room went silent.

Sophie hugged her rabbit.

"You said if I was never born, Daddy would love you more.""

Emma covered her mouth.

I saw Lily staring at her mother.

Confused.

Afraid.

I pulled both girls closer.

Not because I knew what was happening.

Because I knew what mattered.

They needed safety.

Not secrets.

Not excuses.

Safety.

I stood up.

"Where is her sister?""

Emma wiped her tears.

"I don't know.""

I stared at her.

"What do you mean you don't know?""

"When they were born, everything changed.""

"Who is they?""

Emma looked at Mark.

He looked down.

I felt something inside me snap.

"Answer me.""

Emma took a shaky breath.

"The hospital made a mistake.""

"What kind of mistake?""

Her hands trembled.

"They mixed the paperwork.""

I frowned.

"What?""

Mark finally spoke.

"Two babies were born that night.""

He looked at Sophie.

"And one of them wasn't supposed to be raised by us.""

I stared at him.

"Us?""

Mark closed his eyes.

"I mean Emma.""

"No.""

I stepped toward him.

"Say it correctly.""

He looked at me.

"Emma and I.""

There it was.

The truth.

Still coming out in pieces.

Still dragged into the light.

"Who raised the other baby?""

Nobody answered.

I looked at Diane.

She was crying.

"Mom.""

She wiped her face.

"I didn't know everything.""

"Everyone keeps saying that.""

I walked toward her.

"What did you know?""

She looked ashamed.

"I knew Mark was the father.""

My jaw tightened.

"I knew Emma had a baby.""

She looked toward Sophie.

"I knew she was hiding something.""

"And you did nothing?""

Diane shook her head.

"I thought I was protecting my family.""

I almost couldn't believe it.

"Your family?""

I looked around the room.

"My daughter was scared to tell me someone hurt her.""

"Sophie was locked away.""

"My wife lied to me.""

"My brother betrayed me.""

I swallowed.

"And everyone called it protecting.""

Nobody had an answer.

My phone buzzed again.

Another message.

Same unknown number.

This time there was no picture.

Just words.

*Ask Emma what happened at Saint Mary's Hospital. Ask her why the records disappeared.*

I looked at Emma.

Her face changed when she saw the message.

"You know that number.""

It wasn't a question.

She didn't deny it.

"Who is it?""

Emma whispered:

"I don't know.""

But Mark did something.

Something small.

Something that gave him away.

He looked terrified.

"You know.""

I turned.

"Mark?""

He said nothing.

"Who sent the message?""

His silence was enough.

I stepped closer.

"Who?""

Finally, he whispered:

"Someone who was there that night.""

"At the hospital?""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

"Who?""

Mark looked at Emma.

And Emma looked like she wanted to disappear.

Then Mark said:

"The nurse.""

A cold silence filled the room.

"What nurse?""

"The nurse who delivered the babies.""

I looked at the phone.

"Why would she contact me now?""

Nobody answered.

Then Sophie spoke.

"Because she knows.""

I looked at her.

"Knows what?""

The little girl looked scared.

But she forced herself to speak.

"That Mommy took one baby.""

Emma's face went white.

"What did you say?""

Sophie stepped backward.

"You told Grandma.""

Diane looked confused.

"Sophie...""

"You said you had to hide one because Daddy would leave.""

Emma shook her head.

"No.""

"You said nobody could know.""

"Sophie, stop.""

The girl's voice broke.

"You said my sister was the lucky one.""

Everyone froze.

I stared at Emma.

"What does that mean?""

Emma didn't answer.

I felt sick.

"Emma.""

Her eyes filled.

"Ryan, listen to me.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"Not until you tell me the truth.""

She looked at the two girls.

Then at me.

Then she whispered:

"The other baby...""

Her voice cracked.

"Wasn't supposed to survive.""

My blood ran cold.

"What?""

Emma started crying.

"The doctors said she wouldn't make it.""

"Who?""

"My daughter.""

She looked at Sophie.

"Her sister.""

I waited.

But she didn't continue.

"What happened?""

Emma covered her face.

"She was born with complications.""

"And?""

"And I couldn't lose another child.""

My stomach dropped.

"Another?""

She looked at me.

Then at Mark.

And I saw the fear.

The real fear.

Not of being caught.

Of what she was about to admit.

"I had to choose.""

The words barely left her mouth.

I stared.

"Choose what?""

Emma whispered:

"Which baby got to go home.""

The room went completely silent.

Even the girls stopped moving.

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

"You chose?""

Emma cried.

"I was scared.""

"You chose one child over the other.""

"I thought the other baby was going to die.""

"But she didn't.""

Emma looked down.

"No.""

A horrible realization formed.

The birth certificate.

The alive status.

The missing records.

The hidden child.

I looked at Sophie.

Then back at Emma.

"Where is she?""

Emma didn't answer.

"Where is my daughter?""

She whispered:

"I don't know.""

I stepped back.

"Your daughter?""

Emma nodded through tears.

"Yes.""

The word destroyed me.

Because for years, I believed I had one child.

But somewhere out there was another little girl.

A child connected to all these lies.

A child whose existence had been erased.

Then the front door opened again.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Wearing a nurse's uniform.

Holding a folder.

Her eyes locked on Emma.

Then on me.

"I think it's time he knows what really happened that night.""

Emma whispered:

"No.""

The nurse walked inside.

And placed the folder on the table.

"I kept these records for six years.""

She looked at me.

"Because I knew one day you would come home early.""

I stared at her.

"Who are you?""

She looked at Emma.

Then answered:

"My name is Clara.""

A pause.

"And I was the nurse who delivered your daughters.""

My daughters.

Plural.

The word echoed in my mind.

Clara opened the folder.

And pulled out a photograph.

A newborn baby.

A hospital bracelet.

And a name.

I looked at it.

Then my knees nearly gave out.

Because the baby's name wasn't unknown.

May you like

It was the name Emma had spent six years pretending never existed.
