Amused

Chapter 9: The Person Who Was Never Supposed to Be Involved

I read the name several times.

Evelyn Reed.

My mother.

The woman who had taught me how to ride a bicycle, attended every school concert, and cried when Lily called her Grandma.

The woman who had spent the previous weekend telling Danielle she was praying for our family.

I looked at Officer Brooks.

“Why would my mother be involved?””

She didn't answer immediately.

Detective Harris checked the information again.

“The number has been active for several years. It was used to communicate with Vanessa Cole on multiple occasions.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Mr. Reed—”

“My mother has nothing to do with this.””

Officer Brooks remained calm.

“Then we'll establish that.””

I pulled out my phone.

I called her.

She answered after two rings.

“Marcus, sweetheart.””

Her voice sounded normal.

Warm.

Familiar.

“Where are you?””

“At home. Why?””

“I need to see you.””

A pause.

“Is everything all right?””

“No.””

Her voice softened.

“What's happened?””

“It's about Lily.””

There was a long silence.

Then she whispered:

“Oh, sweetheart.””

I closed my eyes.

“Mom, did you speak to Vanessa on Friday?””

Another pause.

“Why are you asking?””

“Just answer me.””

“I don't understand.””

“Did you?””

She sighed.

“Marcus, this isn't a conversation to have over the phone.””

My stomach tightened.

“Where are you?””

“At home.””

“Don't go anywhere.””

I ended the call.

Officer Brooks looked at me.

“Do you want us to accompany you?””

“Yes.””

My mother's house looked exactly as it had when I was a child.

White curtains.

A flower bed along the walkway.

A small wooden birdhouse beside the porch.

I remembered Lily running through the garden during summer visits.

Grandma, look!

Grandma, watch me!

Grandma, can I have another cookie?

I couldn't reconcile those memories with the messages on the tablet.

My mother opened the door.

She looked at Officer Brooks first.

Then at me.

Her smile disappeared.

“Marcus.””

I walked inside.

“Mom, we need to talk.””

She closed the door.

“Of course.””

Officer Brooks introduced herself and explained that they were investigating communications involving my daughter.

My mother nodded politely.

“I understand.””

Detective Harris placed a printed message on the dining table.

“Mrs. Reed, do you recognize this number?””

She glanced at it.

Then she looked away.

“No.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Mom.””

She turned toward me.

“Marcus, I don't know what you think is happening.””

“Your number was used to communicate with Vanessa.””

“That's impossible.””

“Then show us your phone.””

Her expression changed.

“Why?””

“Because we need to establish what happened.””

She crossed her arms.

“I don't appreciate being treated like a criminal.””

Officer Brooks spoke calmly.

“Mrs. Reed, we're asking for your cooperation.””

My mother stared at me.

“You're going to let them question me?””

I swallowed.

“Mom, Lily is dead.””

Her eyes filled.

“I know.””

“Then help us understand why someone using your number was involved.””

She sat down.

For a moment, she looked much older than I remembered.

Then she said something I never expected.

“I didn't know Vanessa was going to involve the child.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“What?””

My mother closed her eyes.

“I thought it was between adults.””

Officer Brooks immediately stepped forward.

“Mrs. Reed, what exactly were you involved in?””

My mother began crying.

“I only wanted to protect my son.””

I stared at her.

“From what?””

“From Danielle.””

I shook my head.

“Why?””

“Because I never trusted her.””

I laughed once.

“You've known Danielle for nine years.””

“And I've watched her control you for nine years.””

“Mom, she was my wife.””

“She was taking you away from your family.””

I stared at her.

“Taking me away?””

My mother nodded.

“You stopped visiting. You stopped helping Daniel. You spent every holiday with her family.””

I felt sick.

“So you helped Vanessa destroy my marriage?””

My mother looked down.

“I helped her show you what Danielle was really like.””

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

“By sending messages to my daughter?””

“I never sent anything to Lily.””

“Someone using your number did.””

“Vanessa had access to my phone.””

Officer Brooks leaned forward.

“When did you give Ms. Cole access?””

My mother hesitated.

“Several months ago.””

“Why?””

“She said she needed to contact Marcus about an urgent family matter.””

I stared at her.

“You gave my mistress your phone?””

My mother looked at me.

“She wasn't your mistress when I first met her.””

I felt my stomach turn.

“What does that mean?””

My mother wiped her cheeks.

“Daniel introduced us.””

I closed my eyes.

Another person.

Another secret.

Another betrayal.

Officer Brooks asked, “Did you know about the arrangement between Danielle and Ms. Cole?””

My mother nodded.

“I knew they were talking.””

“What were they discussing?””

“Your marriage.””

I looked at her.

“Did you know they were planning to manipulate my communications?””

“No.””

“Did you know someone was sending messages to Lily?””

“No.””

“Did you know Vanessa had been in our house?””

My mother looked away.

That was enough.

“Mom.””

She began crying.

“I knew she visited once.””

“When?””

“October.””

The same month as the photograph.

I sat down.

“What happened?””

My mother looked at Officer Brooks.

“Can I speak to my son alone?””

“No,” Officer Brooks replied.

“Not during this interview.””

My mother nodded slowly.

Then she reached into a drawer and removed a small envelope.

“I kept this because I thought one day Marcus would need to know.””

She placed it on the table.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

My mother stood beside Vanessa in a restaurant.

Between them was Daniel.

The date was six months earlier.

On the back, in my mother's handwriting, were the words:

*The plan is working. Marcus still believes he's in control.*

I looked at her.

“What plan?””

She lowered her head.

“Your brother wanted you to leave Danielle.””

“Why?””

“Because of the business.””

I frowned.

“What business?””

My mother looked at me.

“Your father left you something when he died.””

I stared at her.

“My father left me his shares in the company.””

“Not only the shares.””

She took a breath.

“He left you a trust.””

I felt my pulse quicken.

“What trust?””

“An inheritance trust. It was supposed to transfer full control to you when Lily turned nine.””

I shook my head.

“That makes no sense.””

“It was in your father's will.””

“Why didn't I know?””

“Because the paperwork was handled by the family attorney.””

I stared at her.

“And?””

My mother looked at Officer Brooks.

“Daniel believed that if Marcus divorced Danielle before Lily's ninth birthday, the trust would be transferred differently.””

I felt sick.

“Why?””

“Because the trust contained a provision for Lily.””

I leaned forward.

“What provision?””

My mother whispered:

“If Marcus died or became legally incapacitated, Lily would inherit the controlling interest.””

I stared at her.

The room seemed to grow colder.

Detective Harris looked up.

“Mrs. Reed, are you suggesting someone had a financial motive involving the child's inheritance?””

My mother nodded.

“Daniel believed he could control the shares through a guardianship arrangement.””

I looked at her.

“Are you telling me my brother wanted control of my daughter's inheritance?””

She started crying.

“Yes.””

I stood.

“And Vanessa?””

“She was supposed to help create the circumstances for your divorce.””

“And Danielle?””

My mother looked away.

“Danielle wanted to secure her own financial future.””

I felt something break inside me.

“So everyone was fighting over money.””

Nobody answered.

Then my mother said something that changed everything again.

“Except Danielle didn't know about the trust.””

I turned.

“What?””

“She knew there was money involved, but she didn't know the full details.””

“Then who told her?””

My mother hesitated.

“Your father.””

I stared at her.

“My father died nine years ago.””

“He told her before the wedding.””

I felt dizzy.

“Why would he do that?””

“Because he wanted her to protect Lily.””

I gripped the back of the chair.

“Protect her from what?””

My mother looked directly at me.

“From Daniel.””

Officer Brooks asked my mother to accompany them to the station.

She agreed.

Before leaving, she turned toward me.

“Marcus, I know you hate me.””

I didn't answer.

“I thought I was helping.””

I looked at her.

“You watched a little girl become frightened of her own family.””

Her face crumpled.

“I didn't know it would go this far.””

“You knew enough.””

She reached for my hand.

I stepped away.

Then she whispered:

“There's one more thing you should know.””

I looked at her.

“Your father didn't leave that trust because he was wealthy.””

I frowned.

“Then why?””

“Because he knew someone in the family would eventually try to take what belonged to Lily.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

My mother looked toward Detective Harris.

Then she said:

“He told me that if anything ever happened to Lily, I should find the original will.””

The original will was stored in a safe deposit box at a bank downtown.

Detective Harris obtained the necessary authorization through the ongoing investigation.

We arrived just before closing.

The bank manager brought out a sealed document packet.

My father's handwriting appeared across the front.

*For Marcus, when the time comes.*

My hands trembled as I opened it.

There were several legal documents.

The trust agreement.

A letter from my father.

And a second envelope addressed to Lily.

I couldn't breathe.

My daughter had been named in a document written before she was born.

I opened the letter to me first.

The first paragraph explained the trust.

The second explained why he had created it.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

*Marcus, if you're reading this because Lily is no longer safe, remember something: money is never the reason a child should lose her family. But greed can make people forget that children are human beings, not assets.*

I pressed my fingers against the paper.

Detective Harris quietly read the next page.

Then his expression changed.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He turned the document toward me.

There was a handwritten amendment.

It had been added three years earlier.

My father's original signature appeared beneath it.

The amendment stated that if anyone attempted to interfere with Lily's safety or inheritance, control of the trust would transfer to an independent trustee.

I looked at the name.

*Evelyn Reed.*

My mother.

I stared at the document.

“Why would my father choose her?””

Detective Harris read the attached note.

Then he looked at me.

“Because your father apparently knew your brother had been trying to gain access to the trust.””

I felt my knees weaken.

Then I noticed a final attachment.

A list of names.

Daniel Reed.

Vanessa Cole.

Evelyn Reed.

And Danielle Reed.

Beside each name was a handwritten note.

My father's final sentence read:

*If these four ever work together, Marcus must be told the truth about Lily's birth.*

I stopped breathing.

Lily's birth?

What could my father possibly have known?

I opened the second envelope.

The one addressed to my daughter.

Inside was a photograph of a newborn baby.

A hospital bracelet.

And a short handwritten note.

*To my granddaughter, Lily. One day, I hope you learn why your father chose you, even before he knew your name.*

I looked at Detective Harris.

“What does this mean?””

He turned the hospital bracelet over.

The name printed on it wasn't Lily Reed.

It was another name.

A name I'd never heard before.

Then my phone rang.

Officer Brooks.

I answered.

“Marcus, we've received the final forensic report from the hospital.””

My heart began pounding.

“What did you find?””

Her voice was strained.

“Your daughter's medical emergency wasn't consistent with the initial explanation provided by her family.””

I looked at the hospital bracelet.

“Meaning?””

“There's evidence of an earlier medical event that may have been deliberately concealed.””

I gripped the table.

“Who concealed it?””

Officer Brooks paused.

Then she said:

“Mr. Reed, the doctor who treated Lily on Friday has just identified the person who interfered with her emergency care.””

I swallowed.

“Who?””

“Your wife.””

I closed my eyes.

Then Officer Brooks added:

“But that's not the worst part.””

I waited.

“The doctor says Danielle wasn't the only person who knew Lily was in danger.””

“Who else?””

Officer Brooks lowered her voice.

“Your daughter had been brought to the hospital twice before. And the second visit was registered under a different child's name.””

I looked down at the bracelet.

The unfamiliar name suddenly made sense.

May you like

Lily had been treated under another identity.

And someone had gone to extraordinary lengths to make sure I never discovered it.
