Chapter 7: The Agreement That Could Have Killed My Daughter

I read the sentence again.
*Once Lily is gone, Marcus will have no reason to stay married to me.*
The paper trembled between my fingers.
I read it a third time, hoping the words would rearrange themselves into something less horrifying.
They didn't.
My brother stood across the table, staring at the floor.
“Daniel,” I whispered.
“Tell me this isn't real.””
He rubbed both hands over his face.
“Marcus, I didn't write that email.””
“It's from Danielle.””
“I know.””
“And it's addressed to Vanessa.””
“I know.””
“What agreement?””
He didn't answer.
I slammed the paper onto the table.
“What agreement?””
Daniel flinched.
“Keep your voice down.””
“My daughter is dead! You don't get to tell me to keep my voice down!””
He looked toward the front window.
Then he walked to the door and locked it.
That small movement frightened me more than his silence.
“What are you doing?””
“Making sure nobody comes in.””
I stared at him.
“Who are you afraid of?””
He turned around.
“Marcus, listen carefully. There are things about Danielle you never knew.””
“Then start talking.””
He pulled out a chair and sat down.
“Your wife didn't just discover your affair. She knew about it before you ever admitted it. She knew about Vanessa because I told her.””
I felt something twist in my stomach.
“You told Danielle?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“February.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked down at his hands.
“Because Danielle came to me first.””
I stared at him.
“What did she want?””
“She wanted to know whether you were serious about leaving.””
I shook my head.
“You're saying she approached you about my marriage?””
“Yes.””
“Why would she do that?””
“Because she was afraid you'd take Lily and leave her with nothing.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Danielle had a career, a house, and a family. What was she going to lose?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Control.””
The word hung in the air.
He continued.
“She wanted you to stay. But she also wanted to make sure you couldn't walk away without consequences.””
I sat down.
“And Vanessa?””
“She wanted you.””
“That's obvious.””
“No, Marcus. She wanted more than you. She wanted your money, your position, your house. She wanted the life she thought Danielle had.””
I stared at the email.
“So they made an agreement?””
Daniel nodded.
“I don't know every detail. But Vanessa promised to help Danielle keep you emotionally attached to the marriage while making you believe you were about to lose it.””
I struggled to understand.
“Why would Vanessa help my wife?””
“Because Danielle promised her something.””
“What?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Your company.””
My head snapped up.
“What?””
“Danielle believed she could force you into a divorce settlement that would give her control of a substantial part of the business. Vanessa thought she could eventually benefit from it.””
I shook my head.
“That's insane.””
“I know.””
“Then why did you help them?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because Danielle promised to pay off my debts.””
Silence.
My brother had been struggling financially for years.
I'd helped him several times, but I'd never known how bad things had become.
“How much did you owe?””
He looked away.
“Almost three hundred thousand dollars.””
I closed my eyes.
“And you thought helping them was worth destroying my family?””
“I thought nobody would get hurt.””
I stood.
“Where was Lily in this plan?””
Daniel didn't answer.
“Where was my daughter?””
His eyes filled.
“I didn't know they'd involve her.””
“Then why was she in the house?””
He swallowed.
“Because Vanessa wanted access to your old phone.””
I felt sick.
“Why?””
“She needed the original messages. She thought the phone still had the authentication information connected to your accounts.””
“And Lily found it?””
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
“Did she see what was on it?””
“I think so.””
“Did she know what you were doing?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“She asked me why there were messages pretending to be you.””
My hands began shaking.
“What did you tell her?””
“I told her it was a grown-up problem.””
“You told an eight-year-old to keep quiet?””
“I didn't want to frighten her.””
I stepped closer.
“Did you threaten her?””
“No!””
“Did you tell her not to tell Danielle?””
He lowered his head.
“I told her not to touch the phone.””
“That isn't what I asked.””
He began crying.
“I told her that if she told you, everything would fall apart.””
I stared at him.
The same words from the recording.
Everything would fall apart.
“Daniel,” I whispered, “you were the man she trusted to fix her bicycle.””
He covered his face.
“I know.””
“She called you Uncle Danny.””
“I know.””
“She asked you to come to her school play.””
His shoulders shook.
“I know!””
I turned away.
For a moment, I couldn't look at him.
Then my phone rang.
Officer Brooks.
“Mr. Reed, where are you?””
“With my brother.””
“Are you alone?””
“No.””
“Is Daniel Reed with you?””
I looked at him.
“Yes.””
“Don't let him leave. We're on our way.””
Daniel looked up.
“What did she say?””
I put the phone away.
“The police are coming.””
His face went pale.
“Marcus, you don't understand.””
“Then explain.””
He stood abruptly.
“Vanessa wasn't supposed to be there Friday.””
“Why?””
“Because Danielle had told her to stay away from Lily.””
“Then why did she come?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Because she thought Lily had found the original recording.””
“What recording?””
He looked at me.
“The one where Danielle explains the plan.””
I felt my heart stop.
“You mean Danielle recorded herself?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she wanted proof that Vanessa had agreed to the arrangement.””
I stared at him.
“And where is that recording?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't know.””
Before I could ask another question, the doorbell rang.
Officer Brooks entered with Detective Harris.
“Daniel Reed?””
My brother nodded.
“Sir, we need you to accompany us.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Marcus, please.””
I didn't move.
As Detective Harris approached, Daniel suddenly reached into his pocket.
Officer Brooks immediately raised her voice.
“Keep your hands where I can see them!””
Daniel froze.
He slowly withdrew a small flash drive.
“I found this in Lily's room,” he whispered.
I stared at it.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I was scared.””
Detective Harris took the drive.
“What's on it?””
Daniel looked directly at me.
“The recording Vanessa came to collect.””
At the station, Detective Harris played the recording through a secure computer.
The first few seconds contained static.
Then Danielle's voice emerged.
“Vanessa, I need you to understand that this has to happen before the end of the month.””
A second voice answered.
Vanessa.
“I understand. But what if Marcus refuses to cooperate?””
“He won't.””
“And if he does?””
Danielle laughed softly.
“Then he'll have to explain why he abandoned his family for another woman.””
There was a pause.
Vanessa spoke again.
“What about Lily?””
Danielle's voice became colder.
“Lily is the reason he'll stay.””
I gripped the chair.
The recording continued.
“She's attached to him,” Vanessa said.
“If he thinks she's unhappy, he'll come running.””
“Exactly.””
“And the messages?””
“Make him believe he sent them. He'll spend so much time defending himself that he won't notice what we're doing.””
I couldn't breathe.
Then Vanessa asked a question.
“What happens if Lily tells him?””
Danielle answered without hesitation.
“Then we make sure he never believes her.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
I stared at the blank computer screen.
My wife.
The mother of my child.
The woman who had held my hand in the hospital when Lily was born.
The woman who had told our daughter that I was coming home.
I looked at Officer Brooks.
“Is this authentic?””
“Preliminary analysis suggests it is. We'll need forensic confirmation.””
I closed my eyes.
“Where is Danielle?””
Officer Brooks exchanged a glance with Detective Harris.
“She was brought in for questioning.””
I stood.
“I want to see her.””
“Not yet.””
“She's my wife.””
“And this is an active investigation.””
I sank back into the chair.
Then Detective Harris placed another document on the table.
It was a handwritten note recovered from the flash drive's storage folder.
The handwriting was Danielle's.
At the bottom was a date.
Friday.
And a sentence:
*If Vanessa cannot retrieve the recording, Daniel will destroy it.*
I looked at my brother through the observation window.
He was sitting alone.
His head was bowed.
Then I noticed something else.
A second line had been written beneath the first.
*If Marcus discovers the truth, tell him about the hospital.*
I turned toward Officer Brooks.
“What hospital?””
She stared at the note.
May you like
Then she slowly closed the folder.
“Mr. Reed, I think it's time we discuss something that wasn't included in Lily's initial medical report.””
