Chapter 3: The Voice That Shouldn't Have Been There

For several seconds, neither Danielle nor I moved.
The tablet remained between us.
The recording had ended, but the woman's voice seemed to linger in the room.
He's with me now.
You'll ruin everything.
I looked at Danielle.
She was staring at the screen.
“That's not me,” she whispered.
I said nothing.
“Marcus, look at me.””
I raised my eyes.
“That's not my voice.””
I wanted to believe her.
God, I wanted to believe her.
But I had heard the recording.
The voice had the same low, gentle rhythm Danielle used when reading bedtime stories. It had the same slight breathiness at the end of certain words.
I knew that voice better than anyone.
“Maybe it's edited,” I said.
Danielle nodded quickly.
“Exactly. Someone could have copied my voice.””
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
I replayed the recording.
This time, I listened for background sounds.
There was a faint electronic hum.
A door closing.
Then the voice.
It sounded as though the recording had been made inside a house.
Our house.
“Where did you find this?”” I asked.
“Lily's tablet.””
“When?””
“Yesterday afternoon. I was looking for photographs to send the funeral home.””
She wiped her face.
“I didn't know what it was. There were several recordings in a folder. I couldn't bring myself to open them.””
I stared at the tablet.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
Her eyes flashed.
“Because you had just walked into our house with your mistress.””
I looked away.
She was right.
“I'm sorry.””
“Stop saying that.””
She sat on the edge of Lily's bed.
“Do you know what I thought when I heard that recording?””
I didn't answer.
“I thought you had finally become the man I was afraid you were becoming.””
She looked at the stuffed rabbit.
“I thought you had started a new family somewhere else and decided our daughter was inconvenient.””
“Danielle, I never—”
“Don't.””
She raised her hand.
“Not yet.””
I placed the tablet on the dresser.
“I'm calling Officer Brooks.””
Danielle nodded.
“Do it.””
Officer Brooks arrived twenty-five minutes later.
She came with another detective, a tall white man named Detective Harris, who carried a black equipment case.
They listened to the recording twice.
The second time, Detective Harris asked us not to speak.
When it ended, he looked at Danielle.
“Mrs. Reed, do you recognize the voice?””
Danielle folded her arms.
“Someone has made it sound like mine.””
“Can you explain why you believe that?””
“Because I didn't record it.””
Detective Harris nodded.
“That's something we can examine.””
He connected the tablet to a small device.
“We'll preserve the original files and review their metadata. Please don't delete or modify anything.””
Officer Brooks opened her notebook.
“Mr. Reed, I also need to ask about your relationship with Ms. Vanessa Cole.””
Danielle looked at me.
I swallowed.
“Vanessa and I have been seeing each other.””
“For how long?””
“About eleven months.””
“Did Ms. Cole have access to your phone?””
“Sometimes.””
“Did she know your passcode?””
I hesitated.
“Yes.””
Officer Brooks made a note.
“Did she have access to your home?””
“She visited a few times.””
Danielle let out a bitter laugh.
“A few times?””
I looked at her.
“Danielle—”
“Tell them the truth, Marcus.””
I turned back to the officer.
“She came here when Danielle was at work. Maybe five or six times.””
Danielle stared at me.
“Five or six?””
I couldn't meet her eyes.
Detective Harris looked up from the tablet.
“Did Ms. Cole ever spend time alone with Lily?””
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
I stopped.
I remembered something.
A Thursday evening.
Vanessa had stopped by my office to bring me a document. I'd been on a conference call, so I'd asked her to wait in the living room.
Lily had been home with Danielle.
Or so I'd thought.
Another memory surfaced.
Vanessa sending me a photograph of a child's drawing, asking whether Lily had made it.
I had laughed and said yes.
I'd assumed she had seen it on the refrigerator.
“Marcus?”” Officer Brooks prompted.
I rubbed my face.
“She may have been around Lily when I wasn't there.””
Danielle stood up.
“You let her be alone with our daughter?””
“I didn't know she was alone with her.””
“That isn't what I asked.””
I had no answer.
Officer Brooks closed her notebook.
“We need to establish exactly who had access to the devices and the house.””
Detective Harris carefully placed the tablet inside a protective sleeve.
“We'll also examine the audio. A recording like this can be manipulated, but we shouldn't jump to conclusions.””
Danielle nodded.
“There's another message.””
Everyone turned toward her.
She walked to the bedside drawer and removed a folded piece of paper.
“Lily wrote this.””
She handed it to Officer Brooks.
The writing was uneven.
*Mommy, Vanessa said Daddy is going to leave us. She said if I am good, she might let him call me.*
Officer Brooks read it twice.
“When did you find this?””
“Yesterday.””
“Did you tell anyone?””
“No.””
“Why not?””
Danielle looked at me.
“Because I thought my husband had already chosen her.””
I lowered my head.
Officer Brooks placed the note in an evidence envelope.
“Mrs. Reed, we'll need to speak with Ms. Cole.””
I looked up.
“She's not going to admit anything.””
“That's why we're investigating.””
At 11:40 a.m., I called Vanessa.
She answered immediately.
“Marcus?””
“Where are you?””
“At home. Why?””
“I need to see you.””
A pause.
“Is Danielle there?””
“No.””
“Good.””
I closed my eyes.
“Vanessa, what did you do?””
Silence.
Then a sharp breath.
“What are you talking about?””
“Lily's tablet.””
“What about it?””
“There are recordings.””
Her voice changed.
“Marcus, listen to me. You need to be careful.””
“Careful about what?””
“About Danielle.””
I stared at the wall.
“Why?””
“Because she's not telling you everything.””
I felt a cold sensation spread through my chest.
“What does that mean?””
“I think you should come over.””
“Answer my question.””
“Not over the phone.””
I ended the call.
Officer Brooks had been standing near the hallway.
She looked at me.
“Did she say something?””
“She wants me to come over.””
“Don't go alone.””
“I won't.””
Vanessa lived in a modern apartment complex fifteen minutes from our house.
When we arrived, Officer Brooks and Detective Harris waited in an unmarked vehicle nearby.
I went upstairs alone.
Vanessa opened the door before I knocked a second time.
She wore a white blouse and black trousers.
Her hair was tied back.
She looked like the woman who had stood beside me at expensive restaurants and whispered about our future.
But today, I noticed something different.
Her hands were shaking.
“Marcus,” she said, stepping aside.
I entered.
Her apartment smelled of coffee and expensive perfume.
On the dining table sat two phones.
One was hers.
The other was mine.
I stopped.
“Where did you get that?””
Vanessa closed the door.
“Sit down.””
“That's my phone.””
“I know.””
“Why do you have it?””
She glanced toward the device.
“Because you left it at my apartment last Thursday.””
I stared at her.
I remembered leaving my phone on her kitchen counter while we were preparing to go out.
I'd retrieved it the next morning.
Or thought I had.
The phone in front of me looked identical.
Same black case.
Same tiny scratch near the charging port.
But my phone was currently in my pocket.
I pulled it out.
Vanessa looked from one device to the other.
Her face drained of color.
“That's impossible.””
I stepped closer.
“What is it?””
She shook her head.
“I don't know.””
“Vanessa.””
“Marcus, I swear I don't know.””
I picked up the phone on the table.
The screen lit up.
It asked for a passcode.
I entered mine.
The device unlocked.
My photographs appeared.
My emails.
My contacts.
My messages.
Everything looked normal.
Then I opened the text conversation with Danielle.
A message sat at the top.
It had been sent Friday at 2:17 p.m.
DON'T CALL ME AGAIN.
I stared at it.
The phone in my hand had sent the message.
Vanessa moved closer.
“Marcus, I can explain.””
I turned toward her.
“Explain what?””
She looked at the phone.
Then at me.
“I didn't send that message to Lily.””
“Then who did?””
She pressed her lips together.
“Someone had access to the account.””
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
I stepped toward her.
“Vanessa, my daughter is dead.””
Her eyes filled.
“I know.””
“No. You don't.””
“I know, Marcus.””
“You were with me all weekend. You watched me ignore those calls. You knew something was happening.””
She shook her head.
“I didn't know she was dying.””
“But you knew she was sick.””
Vanessa looked away.
That was enough.
I felt my stomach turn.
“How?””
She sank into a chair.
“Danielle sent me a message.””
I stared at her.
“When?””
“Friday afternoon.””
“What did it say?””
“That Lily was in the hospital and you weren't answering.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
Vanessa covered her face.
“I thought you knew.””
“You thought I knew?””
“I thought Danielle was trying to get you to come home.””
I stepped back.
“That's not an answer.””
She lowered her hands.
“Marcus, I didn't want you to leave.””
The room became very quiet.
“What?””
She looked directly at me.
“I knew if you went home, you'd never come back.””
I couldn't speak.
She stood and walked toward the window.
“I thought you were finally choosing me. We had spent months talking about our future. You said you were going to tell Danielle. You said you wanted a new life.””
I stared at her.
“So you let me stay?””
“I didn't know Lily would die!””
“But you knew she needed me.””
Vanessa began crying.
“I thought it was another argument. Danielle had told me before that Lily was having trouble at school. I didn't think—”
“You don't get to decide what matters to my daughter.””
She wiped her cheeks.
“Marcus, I made a mistake.””
I looked at the second phone.
“Did you use my number to send those messages?””
She didn't answer.
“Did you?””
“No.””
“Then unlock it.””
“I can't.””
“Why?””
“Because it's not my phone.””
I looked at the device again.
There was a small notification on the screen.
A message from an unknown contact.
*Did he find the recording?*
Vanessa saw it.
Her face changed.
I picked up my phone and photographed the notification.
“Who sent that?””
She shook her head.
“I don't know.””
I stepped toward the door.
“Marcus, wait.””
I turned.
“There's something you need to know.””
“What?””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“Lily wasn't the only one receiving those messages.””
My heart stopped.
“What are you talking about?””
She reached for the phone on the table and opened a conversation.
The contact name at the top was DANIELLE REED.
Below it were several messages.
The first had been sent Thursday night.
*He's going to leave you.*
The second:
*He doesn't want to be a father anymore.*
The third:
*You should stop pretending your marriage can be saved.*
I stared at the screen.
“Who sent these?””
Vanessa's voice trembled.
“Someone using my number.””
I looked up.
“What?””
She nodded.
“I received messages too. From your number. Someone told me you were going to leave Danielle and take Lily away from her.””
My mind raced.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I thought you were sending them.””
I stared at her.
Then she opened another conversation.
This one was with a contact saved under the name M.
There was only one message.
*Don't let Marcus see the original recording.*
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“Who is M?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Your wife.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Marcus—”
“No. Danielle wouldn't—”
Vanessa reached across the table and turned the screen toward me.
There was a photograph attached to the conversation.
It showed Danielle standing outside Lily's bedroom.
She was holding a phone.
The timestamp was Friday morning.
8:16 a.m.
Two minutes after the voice message had been saved on Lily's tablet.
I stared at the photograph.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from Officer Brooks appeared.
*We examined the duplicate device. There's evidence someone created a second digital identity using your credentials. But we also found a recording on the original phone. You need to hear it immediately.*
Another message followed.
*Mr. Reed, the recording appears to have been made inside your home.*
Then a third.
*And the person speaking in it is not Vanessa.*
I looked at Vanessa.
She was already staring at the screen.
“Marcus,” she whispered, “there's something I haven't told you about Danielle.””
I felt my pulse pounding.
“What?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Your wife knew about us long before you think she did.””
She paused.
“And she didn't discover the affair by accident.””
My phone rang.
Officer Brooks.
I answered.
“Mr. Reed,” she said urgently, “where are you?””
“With Vanessa.””
“Stay there. Don't touch anything else.””
“Why?””
Her voice dropped.
“Because we just recovered a deleted message from Lily's original phone.””
I gripped the edge of the table.
“What message?””
There was a brief silence.
Then Officer Brooks said:
“Your daughter sent it to someone four minutes before she collapsed.””
I closed my eyes.
“Who did she send it to?””
Officer Brooks took a breath.
“Her mother.””
May you like
My blood ran cold.
“And the message said, 'Mommy, she's here again. Please come get me.''”
