Amused

Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Plan

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because I was angry.

Because I was trying to understand how many people had been lying to me.

My daughter.

My wife.

My mother.

Vanessa.

Everyone seemed to have a secret.

But only one person had used those secrets to hurt a child.

Vanessa.

The next morning, my attorney called.

“We need to meet.””

His voice sounded serious.

I arrived at his office and placed everything on the table.

The recordings.

The DNA report.

Emily’s letter.

He read quietly.

When he finished, he looked at me.

“This changes things.””

“How?””

“The DNA report is meaningless without proper chain of custody.””

“So she used a fake test.””

“Possibly.””

“And the documents?””

He looked at them.

“This suggests financial motivation.””

I nodded.

“She wanted my house.””

“Not just your house.””

He pointed at one line.

“She wanted control over your assets.””

I felt sick.

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

It was Vanessa.

I answered.

“Why are you calling me?””

Her voice was calm.

“We need to talk.””

“I have nothing to say.””

“I think you do.””

“What?””

“About Nia’s real father.””

I went silent.

She continued.

“You deserve to know.””

“No. I deserve the truth.””

“And I’m offering it.””

“Where?””

She gave me an address.

A restaurant.

An hour later, I sat across from her.

She looked tired.

Not guilty.

Just tired.

“I didn’t want things to become this bad.””

I almost smiled.

“You destroyed a child’s confidence.””

“I was trying to protect myself.””

“There it is.””

She looked away.

“My father convinced me.””

“Your father?””

She nodded.

“He told me if Nia wasn’t your biological daughter, she could challenge everything.””

“That’s what this was about?””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“Money.””

At least she admitted it.

“What about the man you were meeting?””

Her face changed.

“You know.””

“I know enough.””

She looked down.

“He contacted me first.””

“Why?””

“Because he wanted to meet Nia.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Who is he?””

Before she could answer, someone pulled out the chair beside her.

I looked up.

And my blood froze.

Because the man sitting down was someone I recognized.

Someone I had seen at every family gathering.

Someone who had hugged Nia when she was a baby.

My cousin, Daniel.

He looked at me.

“I guess we’re finally having this conversation.””

I stood.

“What are you doing here?””

Daniel sighed.

“I’m sorry.””

“Sorry?””

My voice rose.

“You knew?””

He looked down.

“Yes.””

The restaurant suddenly felt too small.

“You knew Nia might be your daughter?””

Daniel nodded.

The pain was immediate.

Not because of biology.

Because of betrayal.

“You let me raise her without saying anything?””

“I didn’t know what to do.””

“You had twelve years.””

“I was scared.””

Everyone was scared.

Everyone except Nia.

She was the one who suffered.

Daniel looked at me.

“I never wanted to hurt her.””

“Then why?””

He swallowed.

“Because Vanessa’s father found out.””

“And?””

“He threatened me.””

“With what?””

Daniel looked away.

“My business.””

The same pattern.

Fear.

Money.

Silence.

I stood there realizing the adults around my daughter had spent years protecting themselves.

While she sat alone in a kitchen.

Then Daniel said something unexpected.

“There’s one more thing.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“Vanessa didn’t start this.””

My expression hardened.

“Don’t defend her.””

“I’m not.””

He looked at me.

“Her father did.””

I went quiet.

Daniel continued.

“He planned everything.””

“What everything?””

“To make you believe Nia was a threat.””

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From my attorney.

Attached was a document.

I opened it.

It was a financial transfer record.

A payment.

From Vanessa’s father.

To someone else.

The recipient name made my blood run cold.

Because it wasn’t Vanessa.

It wasn’t Daniel.

It was someone I thought had been helping me.

Someone who had been beside me from the beginning.

The payment went to my attorney’s assistant.

May you like

And underneath the transfer was a note:

“Keep him distracted until the custody filing is complete.””
