Chapter 7: The Mother Who Stayed Silent

I drove to my mother’s house without telling anyone.

Not Vanessa.

Not my attorney.

Not even Nia.

Because I was terrified of what I would hear.

The woman who raised me had always been the person I trusted most.

But lately, every road led back to her.

When she opened the door, she immediately knew something was wrong.

“You found out.””

Those three words almost broke me.

I stared at her.

“You knew.””

My mother looked down.

That was enough.

“You knew?””

She stepped aside.

“Come in.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“I need you to answer me.””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The world went quiet.

My own mother had just admitted it.

“Yes, I knew.””

I laughed once.

A painful, empty sound.

“For how long?””

She didn’t answer.

“For how long?””

“Since before Emily passed away.””

I stepped backward.

“No.””

She reached toward me.

I moved away.

“Don’t.””

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“But you didn’t.””

“I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“Losing you.””

I stared at her.

“You let me raise a child believing she was mine because you were afraid?””

She cried quietly.

“I thought love mattered more than blood.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to say that after hiding the truth.””

She sat down.

Her hands trembled.

“Emily knew.””

That stopped me.

“What?””

“She knew there was a possibility.””

I felt sick.

“Explain.””

My mother looked at the floor.

“Before Nia was born, Emily and I had a conversation.””

I listened.

Because even though I was angry, I needed the truth.

“Emily told me she had been afraid to tell you something.””

“What?””

“She had been assaulted before you met her.””

My breathing stopped.

My mother continued carefully.

“She never knew for certain who Nia’s biological father was.””

I closed my eyes.

Pain moved through me.

Not anger.

Pain.

Because suddenly, memories changed.

Emily’s fear.

Her silence.

The way she sometimes cried without explaining why.

I had thought she was hiding something from me.

But maybe she had been carrying something she couldn’t bear.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

My mother wiped her tears.

“She was afraid you would leave.””

I looked away.

“I would never have left her.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

“Because trauma doesn’t always listen to logic.””

The words stayed with me.

For a long time, neither of us spoke.

Finally, I asked:

“Does Vanessa know?””

My mother nodded.

“She found out months ago.””

“How?””

“Her father’s investigator discovered it.””

I clenched my jaw.

“So Vanessa knew my daughter might not be biologically mine.””

“Yes.””

“And instead of protecting her…”

My mother looked away.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice became sharper.

“You don’t know what she did.””

My mother looked at me.

“What happened?””

I showed her the pictures.

The videos.

The documents.

By the time she finished watching, she was crying.

“Oh my God.””

“She was trying to remove Nia from my life.””

My mother shook her head.

“She misunderstood everything.””

“What do you mean?””

She looked at me.

“The DNA test doesn’t prove what she thinks.””

I froze.

“What?””

My mother stood and walked to a cabinet.

She pulled out an old envelope.

“This was Emily’s.””

My hands shook as I took it.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was familiar.

My wife’s handwriting.

The woman I lost twelve years ago.

I opened it.

The first line destroyed me.

If you are reading this, it means I was never brave enough to tell you the whole truth.

I kept reading.

Emily explained everything.

The fear.

The uncertainty.

The night she found out she was pregnant.

And then the sentence that made my heart stop:

But one thing I know with absolute certainty is that you are Nia’s father in every way that matters.

I closed my eyes.

Tears fell before I could stop them.

Then I read the final paragraph.

There is another truth I need you to know. The DNA test you may one day see was not taken from Nia. It was taken from another sample.

I looked up.

“What?””

My mother nodded.

“Emily suspected someone might use the truth against you.””

I read the final sentence.

Please don’t let anyone who only cares about blood take away the person who gave her love.

My hands trembled.

Because suddenly the DNA test Vanessa showed me wasn’t proof.

It was a weapon.

I stood up.

“I need to go.””

My mother grabbed my arm.

“There’s something else.””

I turned.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“Vanessa didn’t just find the DNA information.””

“What else?””

“She found Emily’s original medical records.””

“And?””

My mother swallowed.

“She knows who Nia’s biological father is.””

I froze.

“Who?””

My mother whispered the name.

And the moment she said it, every piece of the puzzle fell into place.

May you like

Because the man Vanessa had been meeting secretly…

Was someone from my own family.
