Amused

Chapter 3: The Family Secret

My mother hadn’t called me in six months.

Not once.

Not after birthdays.

Not after holidays.

Not even when I sent messages asking if she wanted to see Nia.

So when I saw her name on Vanessa’s phone, I knew something was wrong.

Vanessa rejected the call immediately.

I noticed.

She noticed me noticing.

“Who was that?”” I asked.

“Nobody.””

“Nobody has a name saved in your phone?””

She looked away.

“It was my mother.””

I froze.

“Your mother?””

“Yes.””

“Why did she call you?””

“She calls everyone.””

“That’s not true.””

Vanessa grabbed her coffee.

“You’re looking for problems.””

“No. I’m finding them.””

She walked past me.

But I stopped her.

“What did my mother have to do with this?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

And that was the second time in two days her silence gave her away.

Later that afternoon, I called my mother.

She answered after one ring.

“Are you finally ready to talk?””

Her voice was cold.

“Mom, why did you call Vanessa?””

A pause.

A long one.

Then she sighed.

“You found out.””

My stomach tightened.

“Found out what?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

“Your wife has been asking me questions about Nia for months.””

“What kind of questions?””

“Questions about custody. About money. About what would happen if something happened to you.””

I felt like the room tilted.

“What?””

“She said she was worried about the future.””

I gripped the phone.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought you knew.””

I closed my eyes.

All those moments suddenly connected.

Vanessa asking about my savings.

Vanessa asking about my life insurance.

Vanessa asking whether Nia’s inheritance from her mother was protected.

I had ignored every warning.

Because I wanted my second marriage to work.

My mother’s voice softened.

“I should have told you sooner.””

“Yes,” I whispered.

“You should have.””

After hanging up, I drove straight to school to pick up Nia.

When she got into the car, she immediately noticed my expression.

“Is everything okay?””

I looked at my daughter.

And realized something.

Children always know when adults are lying.

They just don’t always know how to prove it.

“No,” I said honestly.

She looked down.

“Is Vanessa leaving?””

The question broke my heart.

Because she wasn’t asking if her stepmother would leave.

She was asking if she would finally be safe.

“I don’t know yet,” I replied.

That evening, I asked Nia something I should have asked months earlier.

“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?””

She stared at her hands.

“Because every time I tried, Vanessa cried.””

“Cried?””

“She said I was trying to ruin her family.””

I felt anger rising.

“What else?””

Nia hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“She told me if you knew the truth, you would choose her because she was your wife.””

I pulled my daughter into a hug.

“No one should ever make you feel like you have to compete for my love.””

That night, Ava came to my room.

She was holding her phone.

“Dad?””

“Yes?””

“I need to show you something else.””

My heart sank.

“How much more is there?””

She looked scared.

“A lot.””

She opened a hidden folder.

Inside were videos.

Not pictures.

Videos.

I watched the first one.

Vanessa’s voice filled the room.

“Nia, you don’t get to sit here.””

My hands tightened.

The next video.

“Nia, stop acting like you belong.””

The next.

“If your father asks, you ate already.””

I couldn’t watch anymore.

I turned off the phone.

Ava started crying.

“I didn’t know what else to do.””

I hugged her.

“You did the right thing.””

But then she said something that made me stop.

“There’s one more video.””

“What happens in it?””

Ava looked at the floor.

“Something I think you need to see.””

She pressed play.

The screen showed Vanessa sitting at the dining table.

But she wasn’t alone.

Someone else was there.

Someone I recognized.

Someone who should never have been part of this.

My father-in-law.

Vanessa’s father.

May you like

And then he said something that made my entire body go cold.

“You’re running out of time. If you want the house, you need to make sure the girl doesn’t become a problem.””
