Amused

Chapter 5: The Person Behind the Lie

The photograph haunted me.

Not because it showed Nia.

Because it showed someone watching her.

Someone who had been close enough to take the picture without her knowing.

I called the number immediately.

No answer.

I called again.

Nothing.

Then a message appeared.

“You should ask your daughter what she’s hiding.””

My first instinct was anger.

My second was fear.

Because the message was designed to make me doubt.

And after everything Vanessa had done, I refused to let anyone manipulate me again.

When Nia came home from school, I sat with her at the kitchen table.

Not the dining table.

Not the place where she had been rejected.

A simple kitchen table.

A safe place.

“Can I ask you something?””

She nodded.

“Is there anything you haven’t told me?””

Her face changed.

Immediately.

That scared me.

“What?””

She looked down.

“I didn’t want to make things worse.””

“Nia.””

She took a deep breath.

“There was one night you weren’t supposed to know about.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What happened?””

She looked at Ava.

Ava nodded gently.

“You can tell him.””

Nia reached into her backpack.

And pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this in Vanessa’s room.””

My hands went still.

“What is it?””

“I don’t know.””

I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Not regular documents.

Legal documents.

I read the first page.

My blood turned cold.

It was a draft agreement.

A plan.

A plan that involved my house.

My finances.

And guardianship.

But something else was there.

A name.

A name I didn’t expect.

My mother.

I looked up.

“Nia, where did you find this?””

She hesitated.

“In Vanessa’s closet.””

“When?””

“Two weeks ago.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because Vanessa saw me holding it.””

I froze.

“What did she say?””

Nia whispered:

“She told me if I told you, she would make sure you never believed me again.””

The room became silent.

Then Ava spoke.

“Dad, there’s more.””

She grabbed her phone.

“I found this after the dinner video.””

She opened another recording.

The video showed Vanessa talking to someone.

Not her father.

Not my mother.

Someone else.

A lawyer.

Vanessa was sitting at a restaurant.

“I just need him to believe she’s unstable,” Vanessa said.

The lawyer looked uncomfortable.

“That’s a serious accusation.””

“She’s emotional. She cries constantly.””

The lawyer shook his head.

“And the evidence?””

Vanessa leaned closer.

“People believe what they see.””

The video ended.

I sat there in silence.

Because suddenly I understood.

The cold dinners.

The isolation.

The fear.

It wasn’t just cruelty.

It was preparation.

Vanessa had been creating a story.

A story where my daughter was the problem.

And she was the victim.

That night, I made one final decision.

I was going to confront Vanessa.

Not with anger.

Not with shouting.

With the truth.

When I arrived at the house, she was waiting.

She looked confident.

“You came alone.””

“Yes.””

She smiled.

“I knew you would.””

I placed the documents on the table.

Her confidence disappeared.

Slowly.

“You went through my things?””

“You planned to take my daughter away.””

“That’s ridiculous.””

“Then explain the documents.””

She said nothing.

I played the video.

Her own voice filled the room.

When it ended, Vanessa looked different.

Not scared.

Not ashamed.

Angry.

“You think you’ve won?””

I stared at her.

“This isn’t a game.””

She laughed.

“You really think Nia is innocent?””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You never asked why she was always so quiet.””

“What are you talking about?””

She smiled.

A cold, familiar smile.

“The truth about your daughter is something you don’t know.””

I didn’t move.

“What truth?””

Vanessa reached into a drawer.

Pulled out a folder.

And placed it on the table.

“This is why I did everything.””

I opened it.

The first page had Nia’s name.

The second page had a date.

And the third page contained a secret that made me question everything I thought I knew about my own family.
