Amused

Chapter 9: The Last Thing My Mother Knew

I couldn't speak.

My mother stood in the doorway, crying quietly.

My father sat behind his desk, staring at the empty safe.

And I stood between them, wondering how many people had decided they knew better than I did when it came to protecting my children.

"Mom," I finally said.

She wiped her cheeks.

"I thought I was helping.""

"Helping whom?""

"Tasha.""

I stared at her.

"Why?""

"She came to me after Danielle died. She was devastated. She said she'd lost her sister, the baby she'd lost, and the chance to have a family.""

"And you believed her?""

"She was crying, Marcus.""

"So was I.""

My mother looked down.

"I know.""

"No, I don't think you do.""

I stepped closer.

"You watched me bury my wife. You watched me raise two little children alone. You watched Tasha move into my house and become part of their lives. And when Danielle left something specifically to protect Imani, you handed it to the woman Danielle was afraid of.""

My mother began sobbing.

"I didn't know what was in the envelope.""

"You didn't think to ask?""

"Tasha said it was a guardianship agreement.""

"And you believed her?""

"She told me Danielle had changed her mind.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Danielle was dead. How exactly was she going to change her mind?""

My mother covered her mouth.

My father stood.

"Marcus, don't speak to your mother that way.""

I turned toward him.

"You're the last person who should tell me how to speak to anyone.""

He stopped.

I looked at my mother again.

"Where did you give Tasha the document?""

"At her apartment.""

"When?""

"Three days ago.""

I felt my heart pound.

"Three days?""

She nodded.

"She said she needed it for a legal appointment.""

"Did she tell you where?""

"She mentioned a lawyer.""

"Which lawyer?""

"I don't know.""

I turned toward the door.

My mother reached for my arm.

"Marcus, please.""

I pulled away.

"What?""

"She said she was going to make things right.""

I looked at her.

"How?""

My mother swallowed.

"She said she was going to bring Imani home.""

I froze.

"What did you say?""

My mother began crying harder.

"She said Imani belonged with her. She said Danielle had wanted it that way.""

I stepped backward.

For a moment, I couldn't hear anything.

Then I grabbed my phone.

I called Patricia.

She answered immediately.

"Marcus?""

"Tasha has the original document.""

There was a pause.

"What document?""

"The one Danielle left with my father. My mother gave it to her three days ago.""

Patricia's voice became sharp.

"Did she say what Tasha intended to do with it?""

"She says Tasha wants to bring Imani home.""

"Mr. Reed, I need you to listen carefully. Keep the children with you.

Do not allow Tasha to remove them from your home or school. I'm contacting the relevant authorities to determine whether there's been any fraudulent filing.""

I looked at my mother.

"Can Tasha file for custody?""

"Anyone can make an application, but she would need to establish a legal basis. The document's authenticity and context will matter.""

"Could she use the altered agreement?""

"She could try. But that doesn't mean it would succeed.""

I exhaled.

"Thank you.""

After the call, I turned to my mother.

"Did Tasha say anything else?""

My mother nodded.

"She said Danielle had promised her something else.""

"What?""

"She said Danielle had promised her that Imani would eventually know the truth about her birth.""

I frowned.

"What truth?""

My mother looked confused.

"She didn't explain.""

I felt another wave of unease.

"Did she say anything about a recording?""

My mother shook her head.

"No.""

I thanked her and left.

When I arrived home, Vanessa was waiting on the porch.

She took one look at my face.

"What happened?""

I told her everything.

She shook her head.

"Your mother gave Tasha the original document?""

"Yes.""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"Marcus, we need to find out what that document actually says.""

"Patricia is working on it.""

"Then let's help.""

We entered the house.

Imani and Caleb were watching television.

I kissed both their heads and told them I needed to make some calls.

Then Vanessa and I began searching the storage boxes Danielle had left behind.

We found old photographs, school reports, birthday cards, insurance documents, and several envelopes.

Most contained ordinary family memories.

But one envelope was different.

It was sealed with red wax.

On the front, Danielle had written:

*For Marcus, only if Tasha refuses to tell the truth.*

I stared at it.

"Open it," Vanessa whispered.

Inside was a letter and a small memory card.

I unfolded the letter.

*Marcus,*

*I hope you never have to read this. But if Tasha has reached the point where she is trying to claim Imani, then I need you to know everything.*

*There is something about her relationship with Daniel that I never told you.*

I looked at Vanessa.

Then I continued.

*Tasha told everyone she lost her baby. That part is true. But she did not lose the baby because of a medical complication alone. She made a decision that she later regretted.*

My stomach tightened.

I continued reading.

*She refused treatment for several weeks because she believed Daniel would come back if she kept the pregnancy. By the time she accepted medical help, the pregnancy could no longer be saved.*

I stopped.

The room was silent.

Vanessa whispered, "Oh my God.""

I continued.

*I never blamed her. I tried to help her understand that Daniel's death was not her fault. But Tasha needed someone to blame, and she chose me.*

*After Imani was born, she began telling people that I had stolen her chance to be a mother. She said I owed her my daughter because I had two children and she had none.*

My hands trembled.

*Marcus, I need you to understand something. Imani was never part of an agreement between us. She was never promised to Tasha. I would never have given away my daughter.*

I lowered the letter.

Vanessa put a hand on my shoulder.

"Keep going.""

The final paragraph was short.

*The memory card contains a recording of the day Tasha came to the hospital. She told me exactly what she intended to do if I ever refused to let her raise Imani.*

I looked at the memory card.

My phone didn't have a slot for it.

Vanessa brought her laptop.

We inserted the card.

There were four files.

One photograph.

Two audio recordings.

And a video.

The video was dated six years earlier.

I pressed play.

Danielle appeared on the screen.

She was sitting in a hospital bed.

She looked tired, but alert.

Tasha stood beside the window.

"You can't keep doing this," Danielle said.

Tasha crossed her arms.

"You promised me.""

"I promised to help you. I never promised you my child.""

"You have two children. I have none.""

"That doesn't make Imani yours.""

Tasha laughed.

"You always get everything.""

Danielle sighed.

"Please stop.""

"You have Marcus. You have Caleb. You have Imani.

You have a home. You have people who love you.""

"I didn't take those things from you.""

"You took Daniel.""

Danielle's face changed.

"Daniel made his own choices.""

Tasha stepped closer.

"Then why did he love you more?""

Danielle looked away.

"Because I was his sister-in-law, Tasha. Not his partner.""

Tasha slapped the bed with her hand.

"You don't know anything!""

"I know you need help.""

Tasha leaned toward her.

"Listen to me. If you die, I will raise Imani.""

Danielle shook her head.

"No.""

"She'll have a mother.""

"She has a mother.""

"She'll forget you.""

Danielle's voice became firm.

"She will never forget me.""

Tasha's expression changed.

Then she said something that made me feel physically sick.

"Maybe she should.""

Danielle stared at her.

"What?""

"Maybe if you weren't here, she'd finally have a chance to be loved properly.""

The video ended.

I sat frozen.

Vanessa closed the laptop.

"Marcus...""

I couldn't answer.

My wife had known.

She had known that Tasha's jealousy had become something dangerous.

And somehow, we'd all ignored the warning signs.

I picked up the second audio recording.

This one was shorter.

It began with Danielle speaking to someone.

"Robert, I need you to listen.""

My father.

Then his voice.

"What happened?""

"Tasha came to the hospital again.""

"Did she threaten you?""

"Not directly.""

A pause.

Then Danielle said:

"She told me that if I couldn't give her Imani willingly, she'd find a way to make it happen.""

My father's voice became angry.

"That's enough. I'll speak to her.""

"No, Robert. Please don't.""

"She needs to understand.""

"She needs help. But I need you to promise me something.""

"What?""

"If I die, don't let her use my death to get close to Imani.""

The recording ended.

I closed the laptop.

For a long time, nobody spoke.

Then my phone rang.

Patricia.

I answered.

"Marcus, I've received an update.""

"What is it?""

"Tasha has filed an emergency custody petition.""

My blood went cold.

"What?""

"She claims Danielle appointed her as Imani's intended guardian and that you've created an unsafe environment by separating them.""

I stood.

"That's absurd.""

"She has submitted the document your mother gave her.""

"Can she do that?""

"She can submit it. The court will need to examine it.""

"When is the hearing?""

"Tomorrow morning.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"Tomorrow?""

"Yes. And Marcus, there's something else.""

"What?""

"Tasha has requested that Imani be interviewed privately by a court-appointed representative.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"She's going to question my daughter?""

"Potentially, yes. But there are procedures to protect children from being pressured.""

I looked toward the living room.

Imani was sitting beside Caleb, drawing on a piece of paper.

She looked peaceful.

She had no idea that another adult was trying to pull her into a legal battle.

I lowered my voice.

"Patricia, what can I do?""

"Gather every original document, every recording, and the food ledger. Preserve the videos. Do not edit anything. And most importantly, don't coach the children about what to say.""

I nodded.

"Understood.""

After the call, I walked into the living room.

"Daddy?"" Imani looked up.

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Can we have pancakes tomorrow?""

I smiled despite everything.

"Of course.""

"With chocolate chips?""

"Absolutely.""

She smiled.

Then Caleb asked:

"Is Tasha coming back?""

I sat beside them.

"I don't know what will happen tomorrow. But I promise nobody will take you anywhere without making sure you're safe.""

Imani looked down at her drawing.

It was a picture of three people holding hands.

A tall man.

A little girl.

And a little boy.

Above them, she had drawn a purple butterfly.

I kissed her forehead.

Then I noticed something written at the bottom of the paper.

*Our real family.*

I had to turn away.

That night, I gathered everything.

The original letters.

The photographs.

The hospital documents.

The food ledger.

The tablet.

The memory card.

I placed them inside a folder and locked it in my office.

At 11:46 p.m., Patricia sent another message.

*The court has requested confirmation of Danielle's original guardianship instructions. Please bring the sealed envelope tomorrow.*

I looked at the envelope.

The one my mother had given Tasha.

Except I still had a copy of the original letter.

I had the recordings.

I had the evidence.

For the first time, I felt prepared.

Then my phone rang.

An unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice spoke.

"Mr. Reed?""

"Yes?""

"My name is Samuel Brooks. I was Danielle's attorney.""

I sat up.

"Patricia mentioned you.""

"I understand there's a custody dispute.""

"Yes.""

He paused.

"Then you need to know something before tomorrow's hearing.""

"What?""

"The document Tasha submitted is not merely altered.""

I gripped the phone.

"What do you mean?""

"Someone used Danielle's signature on a second document after her death.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"Who?""

Samuel took a breath.

"Your mother.""

I couldn't speak.

He continued.

"And there's something else. The original document Danielle signed named someone else as Imani's emergency guardian.""

"Who?""

Samuel answered quietly.

"Her biological father.""

I stared at the wall.

"That's me.""

There was a long silence.

Then Samuel said:

"No, Marcus. That's exactly what I need to explain. Danielle had reason to believe there was a possibility you weren't Imani's biological father.""

The phone nearly slipped from my hand.

"What?""

Samuel continued.

"She left a sealed paternity report with me. It was never meant to be released unless Tasha attempted to claim Imani.""

I looked toward the hallway.

My daughter was asleep upstairs.

And suddenly, I was terrified that the story of her birth was even more complicated than I'd imagined.

"Mr. Brooks," I whispered.

"Who is Imani's biological father?""

May you like

His answer changed everything.

"Your uncle Daniel.""
