Chapter 5: The Child She Tried to Claim
Vanessa arrived twenty minutes later.
She didn't knock.
She walked straight into the kitchen carrying a thick brown folder and placed it on the table.
"Where's Tasha?"" she asked.
"Upstairs.""
"Good.""
My mother stood beside the refrigerator.
"Vanessa, what is happening?""
My sister opened the folder.
"Something Danielle wanted us to know.""
She pulled out three documents.
The first was a hospital report.
The second was a handwritten letter.
The third was a legal form with several signatures.
I recognized Danielle's handwriting immediately.
"Where did you get these?"" I asked.
"From Dad's storage cabinet. He gave me a box of Danielle's belongings after she died. I found these tucked inside an old insurance folder.""
I looked at my father.
He didn't meet my eyes.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Vanessa answered for him.
"Because he was trying to protect everyone.""
I laughed.
"Apparently, everyone except my children.""
My sister pushed the first document toward me.
"Read the date.""
I did.
Three months before Danielle died.
The report described a dispute involving a child and a request to change emergency guardianship arrangements.
I looked at the signature.
Tasha.
Then I read the handwritten note attached to it.
*I will not allow Danielle to take another child away from me.*
I looked up.
"What child?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"Marcus, there's something else.""
She opened the second document.
It was a letter addressed to Danielle.
The first line made my chest tighten.
*Dear Danielle, I know you think I'm trying to replace you, but I only want the chance to be a mother.*
I continued reading.
The letter described Tasha's pregnancy, her relationship with Daniel, and the miscarriage she'd mentioned.
But there was something I hadn't known.
Tasha hadn't lost the baby immediately.
She had carried the pregnancy for several months.
And during that time, Danielle had supported her.
She had attended appointments, helped pay medical expenses, and even offered to let Tasha stay with her.
Then Daniel died.
After his funeral, Tasha became increasingly unstable.
She began telling Danielle that the child should have belonged to her.
Not because the baby was biologically hers.
But because she believed Danielle had taken the life she deserved.
I stopped reading.
"Why would she say Danielle took her baby?""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"Because Tasha believed Daniel would have married her if he hadn't died.""
My father spoke quietly.
"Daniel had ended the relationship before the accident.""
Vanessa turned toward him.
"Then why did you let her believe otherwise?""
My father looked miserable.
"Because I was trying to keep her calm.""
I stared at him.
"You knew all of this?""
"Not everything.""
"Enough to know she wasn't safe around Danielle?""
He didn't answer.
Vanessa opened the third document.
It was a guardianship form.
Danielle had named my father as the temporary guardian of both children if something happened to her and me.
But there was a handwritten addition.
*Tasha is not to be given unsupervised custody of Imani.*
I read it twice.
Then I looked at my sister.
"Why?""
Vanessa took a breath.
"Because Tasha once tried to take Imani from the hospital.""
The room went silent.
"What?""
"It happened when Imani was a baby. Danielle was recovering from an infection. She was exhausted. Tasha came to visit.""
My father lowered his head.
Vanessa continued.
"She told the nurses she was taking the baby to the nursery. But she went toward the hospital exit.""
My hands tightened around the papers.
"Did she actually leave?""
"No. A nurse stopped her before she reached the doors.""
I stared at my sister.
"Why didn't Danielle tell me?""
"She did try.""
My throat tightened.
"When?""
"She called you that evening. But you were working late. You told her you'd call back.""
I remembered.
I remembered that day.
A delayed construction inspection. A phone call I had ignored because I was standing in a noisy warehouse.
I'd called Danielle back hours later.
She'd said everything was fine.
I'd believed her.
"Why didn't she tell me again?""
"She didn't want you fighting with her sister. She thought she could handle it.""
I put my hand over my face.
The silence was broken by a voice from the doorway.
"That's not what happened.""
Tasha stood there.
Her eyes were red.
She had heard everything.
Vanessa turned.
"Then tell us what happened.""
Tasha walked into the kitchen.
"Danielle was confused. She was sick. She didn't know what she was saying.""
"You tried to take Imani from the hospital," I said.
"I was trying to help.""
"By walking toward the exit with my newborn daughter?""
"She was crying! Danielle couldn't even hold her properly!""
"She was recovering from childbirth!""
Tasha shook her head.
"She was exhausted. I was trying to give her a break.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Then why did the nurse have to stop you?""
Tasha looked at her.
"Because she misunderstood.""
I held up the guardianship form.
"Why did Danielle write that you weren't allowed to be alone with Imani?""
Tasha's expression changed.
"She was angry.""
"About what?""
"She thought I wanted to steal her child.""
"Did you?""
"No!""
Her voice cracked.
I looked at her.
"Then explain why you hid this document for years.""
Tasha stared at the paper.
"Danielle made me feel like I was nothing. She treated me like I was dangerous.""
"You gave her reasons.""
"I loved that baby.""
"She wasn't your baby.""
Tasha's face twisted.
"She could have been!""
The words burst out before she could stop them.
Nobody moved.
Tasha covered her mouth.
I felt something inside me break.
"What did you just say?""
She began crying.
"I didn't mean it that way.""
"How did you mean it?""
"I wanted to be a mother.""
"You wanted to be Imani's mother?""
Tasha shook her head.
"I wanted to belong.""
"Then why did you make her feel like she didn't?""
She looked toward the stairs.
"Because every time I looked at her, I saw Danielle.""
I stood.
"She's a child.""
"I know!""
"Then why did you punish her?""
Tasha wiped her cheeks.
"She was always asking for things. She wanted attention. She wanted food.
She wanted you to sit with her every night. She wanted to talk about her mother.""
"She's allowed to miss her mother!""
"I know!""
"Then why did you tell her Danielle was greedy?""
Tasha looked down.
I stepped closer.
"Why did you tell her wanting things made people leave?""
She didn't answer.
Vanessa picked up the hospital document.
"There's another page.""
She turned it over.
On the back was a note from Danielle.
*If I die, Marcus must know that Tasha's grief is real, but her anger is not Imani's responsibility. Please don't let her turn my daughter into a replacement for the child she lost.*
I closed my eyes.
That was the promise.
That was what Danielle had wanted.
Not that Tasha should become a mother.
Not that she should take her place.
Only that she should never make Imani pay for her pain.
I looked at Tasha.
"Did you ever read this?""
She nodded.
"Then you knew.""
"I tried.""
"No. You knew exactly what Danielle feared, and you did it anyway.""
Tasha sank into a chair.
"I didn't know how to stop feeling jealous.""
"That's something you should have dealt with before becoming responsible for a child.""
She began sobbing.
My father moved toward her.
"Marcus, perhaps we should all calm down.""
I turned sharply.
"Don't.""
He stopped.
"You had these documents. You knew she tried to take Imani from the hospital. You knew Danielle didn't trust her. Yet you watched me marry her.""
"I believed she had changed.""
"You believed what you wanted to believe.""
My father looked devastated.
I wasn't ready to forgive him.
Not today.
Maybe not for a long time.
A small sound came from the hallway.
I turned.
Imani was standing there.
She was holding her stuffed rabbit.
Her eyes were fixed on Tasha.
"Did you really want to take me away from Mommy?""
Tasha stood immediately.
"No, sweetheart.""
Imani took a step backward.
"Then why did Mommy write that?""
Tasha's lips trembled.
"Your mother misunderstood me.""
Imani looked at the floor.
"She didn't misunderstand when she said you were angry.""
Tasha reached toward her.
Imani stepped behind me.
That single movement told me more than every document in the folder.
I put my hand on my daughter's shoulder.
"Go upstairs with Caleb, sweetheart.""
She nodded.
Then she paused.
"Daddy?""
"Yes?""
"Am I allowed to take my crackers?""
I looked toward the pantry.
"Take whatever food you want, princess.""
She ran into the kitchen, collected two granola bars, and tucked them into her pajama pocket.
Tasha watched her.
For once, she didn't say anything.
After the children went upstairs, I turned to my wife.
"You need to leave this house.""
Her head snapped up.
"What?""
"You're not staying here tonight.""
"Marcus, you can't throw me out.""
"I can ask you to leave while we figure out what happens next.""
"This is my home too.""
"It stopped feeling like a safe home for my children a long time ago.""
She looked at my father.
"Robert, say something.""
He remained silent.
She turned toward my mother.
"Evelyn?""
My mother shook her head.
"Not this time, Tasha.""
Tasha stared at me.
"You can't erase three years of marriage because of one mistake.""
I looked at the food ledger.
"Twenty-three entries.""
She said nothing.
"One hidden container. One frightened daughter. One son who thought he had to keep secrets to protect his sister.""
I picked up the photograph.
"And a promise you broke.""
Tasha wiped her face.
"Where am I supposed to go?""
"Your sister had a home once. Maybe you should think about why you lost it.""
She flinched.
Then she walked upstairs.
I heard drawers opening.
A suitcase rolling across the bedroom floor.
An hour later, she stood near the front door with a small bag.
Before leaving, she turned toward me.
"Marcus, I really did love you.""
I looked at her.
"I believe you loved what being part of this family made you feel.""
She swallowed.
"That's not fair.""
"Neither was what you did to Imani.""
She opened the door.
Then she stopped.
"There's something Danielle never told you.""
I looked up.
"What?""
Tasha's eyes filled again.
"She wasn't afraid I'd take Imani because I wanted to replace her.""
I frowned.
"Then why?""
Tasha gripped the handle.
"Because she knew I had been keeping something from you.""
"What?""
She looked toward the staircase.
Then she said:
"Imani's birth certificate isn't the only document Danielle changed before she died.""
And with that, she walked out.
I stood in the doorway long after her car disappeared.
Then my phone rang.
It was a number I didn't recognize.
A woman spoke immediately.
"Mr. Reed? My name is Patricia. I was Danielle's attorney.""
I straightened.
"Yes?""
"Your wife left instructions that I should contact you when Imani turned ten.""
I looked toward the stairs.
"Why?""
There was a pause.
"Because there's a question about Imani's legal guardianship that was never resolved.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"What question?""
May you like
The attorney took a breath.
"Mr. Reed, according to the documents Danielle left with me, Tasha was never supposed to become your daughter's legal guardian.""
