Chapter 7: My Father's Signature
I stared at my father across the kitchen.
He stood beside the counter, holding a cup of coffee he hadn't touched.
"Did you sign something giving Tasha the right to raise Imani?""
His face tightened.
"Marcus, let me explain.""
"That's not an answer.""
He placed the cup down.
"Danielle asked me to witness a document.""
"What document?""
"A temporary guardianship arrangement.""
I looked at him in disbelief.
"Patricia called it an adoption consent form.""
"It wasn't an adoption.""
"Then why does it have your signature?""
My father rubbed his forehead.
"Because Danielle wanted Tasha to have a chance to help if you couldn't care for the children.""
I shook my head.
"Why would I be unable to care for my own children?""
"She was worried about your work. You were traveling constantly. You were grieving. She thought you might need help.""
"So she secretly arranged for my wife's sister to take my daughter?""
"That's not what happened.""
I picked up my phone.
"Then tell me exactly what happened.""
My father glanced toward the stairs.
"Not in front of the children.""
"They've heard enough lies to last a lifetime. We're not protecting anyone with silence anymore.""
He sat down.
For a long moment, he stared at his hands.
Then he spoke.
"After Daniel died, Tasha became extremely depressed. Danielle was worried about her. She thought giving Tasha a role in Imani's life might help her recover.""
I laughed bitterly.
"By making her a mother?""
"Not exactly.""
"Then what?""
"Danielle considered allowing Tasha to become Imani's godmother. Someone who could help with school pickups, medical appointments, and occasional childcare.""
"That isn't what the document says.""
My father looked up.
"What does it say?""
"I haven't seen it yet. Patricia is sending it.""
He nodded.
"Then let me see it before you decide what happened.""
I stepped closer.
"You signed something involving my daughter without telling me.""
"Your wife was very ill.""
"And I was her husband!""
"I know.""
"Then why didn't you trust me?""
His eyes filled.
"Because Danielle asked me not to.""
I stared at him.
"You're still using her name to excuse everything.""
He lowered his head.
Before I could respond, my phone vibrated.
An email from Patricia.
The attachment contained three scanned pages.
I opened the first.
*Consent to Temporary Family Guardianship.*
The second page listed Tasha as a proposed caregiver.
The third page contained several signatures.
Danielle's.
My father's.
And a witness signature from someone named Samuel Brooks.
I frowned.
"Who's Samuel Brooks?""
My father looked up.
"An attorney Danielle consulted.""
"Why does his name appear here?""
"He was supposed to oversee the arrangement.""
I scrolled down.
There was a handwritten note beside the final signature.
*This consent is conditional upon the biological father's written approval.*
I read it again.
Then I looked at my father.
"Where is my signature?""
He shook his head.
"You never signed it.""
"Exactly.""
He nodded.
"That's why it never became effective.""
I felt a little of the tension leave my chest.
But only a little.
"Then why did Tasha send it to Patricia?""
"I don't know.""
I called Patricia.
She answered immediately.
"Mr. Reed?""
"I've seen the document. It says my approval was required.""
"Correct.""
"I never approved it.""
"Then the arrangement was never legally completed.""
"Why is Tasha claiming she has rights?""
"That's what I'm trying to establish.""
I looked at my father.
"Was there another version?""
He hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
"Robert.""
He closed his eyes.
"Danielle prepared a second document.""
My stomach dropped.
"What second document?""
"She changed the arrangement after Tasha tried to take Imani from the hospital.""
I stared at him.
"Where is it?""
"I don't know.""
"How can you not know?""
"Danielle gave it to me in a sealed envelope. She asked me to keep it safe.""
"And?""
He looked toward the hallway.
"I gave it to Tasha.""
The room seemed to shrink.
"You did what?""
"She told me Danielle wanted her to have it.""
"Did you read it?""
"No.""
"Why not?""
"Because I trusted her.""
I turned away.
My father continued.
"Marcus, I made a terrible mistake.""
I faced him.
"You didn't make one mistake. You kept making decisions that put my children in danger.""
He didn't argue.
My phone rang again.
This time it was Vanessa.
"Marcus, where are you?""
"At home.""
"I need you to listen carefully. I found something else in Danielle's storage box.""
"What?""
"A letter from Tasha.""
"What's in it?""
"She wrote it before your wedding.""
I closed my eyes.
"Read it.""
Vanessa hesitated.
"Marcus, I think you should see it yourself.""
"Send me a picture.""
A moment later, an image appeared.
The letter was written on plain white paper.
The handwriting was unmistakably Tasha's.
*Danielle,*
*I know you don't want me near Marcus, but I can't keep pretending I don't love him. You have everything I ever wanted. A husband, children, a home, and a future.*
*I thought I could accept that you were happy. But every time I see your daughter, I remember what I lost.*
*If Marcus ever chooses me, I promise I will take care of Imani. I will give her everything I never got to give my own child.*
*Please stop treating me like an outsider.*
At the bottom was a final sentence.
*If you refuse to let me become part of this family, don't blame me for finding another way.*
I stared at the screen.
"Vanessa, when did Danielle receive this?""
"Two months before she died.""
"Did she show it to anyone?""
"She showed it to Dad.""
I looked at my father.
He was already looking at me.
"You knew about this letter?""
He nodded.
"Danielle was devastated.""
"And you still let Tasha marry me?""
My father looked miserable.
"I thought marriage might settle her down. I thought being loved would make her less angry.""
I stared at him.
"She wasn't looking for love. She was looking for a replacement family.""
He covered his face.
I walked toward the staircase.
"Where are you going?"" he asked.
"To check on my children.""
At the top, I found Imani sitting on her bed.
She was holding Danielle's letter.
Caleb was beside her, arranging colored pencils.
"Hey, sweetheart.""
Imani looked up.
"Daddy, can I ask you something?""
"Anything.""
"Did Mommy know Tasha was going to marry you?""
I sat beside her.
"I think she was worried about it.""
"Did she want Tasha to be my mom?""
I took her hand.
"Your mom wanted you to have people who loved you. But nobody can replace her.""
Imani nodded.
Then she asked the question I'd been dreading.
"Did Tasha marry you because of me?""
I looked at her.
"I don't know everything yet.""
She lowered her eyes.
"Maybe if I had been better, she wouldn't have been angry.""
My chest tightened.
I turned toward her.
"Imani, listen to me carefully. Adults are responsible for their own choices. You did not cause Tasha's anger.
You did not cause her sadness. And you did not make her take your food.""
She nodded, but I could see she wasn't convinced.
Caleb put down his pencils.
"Dad?""
"Yes, buddy?""
"Is Tasha coming back?""
I took a breath.
"Not today.""
He looked relieved.
Then he whispered:
"Can I tell you something else?""
"Of course.""
He glanced at his sister.
"Something happened last week.""
Imani immediately looked frightened.
"Caleb, don't.""
I turned toward my son.
"What happened?""
He swallowed.
"Tasha made Imani stand in the laundry room because she ate a granola bar.""
I felt my hands tighten.
"How long?""
"Until you came home.""
I looked at Imani.
"Is that true?""
She nodded.
"She said I had to think about what I'd done.""
I pulled her into my arms.
Then Caleb added something that made my blood run cold.
"She took pictures too.""
"What pictures?""
He reached into his desk drawer and pulled out an old tablet.
"She used this.""
I took it.
There were several photographs.
Imani sitting alone on the laundry room floor.
Imani holding an empty plate.
Imani standing beside the kitchen counter with her head lowered.
The timestamps showed they had all been taken while I was at work.
My stomach turned.
"Why did she take these?""
Caleb looked down.
"She said she needed proof that Imani was difficult.""
I stared at the screen.
Then I noticed a video file.
It was dated the previous Thursday.
I pressed play.
Tasha's voice came through the speaker.
"Tell me what you did.""
Imani's small voice answered.
"I ate the granola bar.""
"And what did I tell you?""
"That I had already eaten.""
"Then why did you take it?""
A pause.
"Because I was hungry.""
"That's not an excuse.""
The video continued.
Then Tasha said something that made me stop breathing.
"Your mother died because she never knew when enough was enough. Don't grow up like her.""
I stopped the video.
I couldn't listen anymore.
Imani covered her ears.
"Please don't watch it.""
I pulled her close.
"I'm sorry, sweetheart.""
Caleb looked at me.
"That's why I wanted to tell you.""
I kissed his forehead.
"You did the right thing.""
My phone vibrated again.
Patricia.
I answered.
"Mr. Reed, we have a serious problem.""
"What now?""
"I've reviewed the document Tasha submitted.""
"And?""
"The signature attributed to Danielle appears to be genuine, but the document itself contains an alteration.""
I stood.
"What alteration?""
"The final paragraph was added after the original document was signed.""
I looked at the tablet.
"Who added it?""
Patricia paused.
Then she said:
"Someone changed the document to make it appear that Danielle had granted Tasha permanent authority over Imani.""
I stared at my daughter's frightened face.
"Can you prove who changed it?""
"Not yet. But I found something else in the original file.""
"What?""
"A handwritten note from Danielle, attached to the back.""
I gripped the phone.
"What does it say?""
Patricia lowered her voice.
"It says, 'If Tasha ever tries to claim my daughter as her own, show Marcus the recording.''"
I looked at the tablet in my hand.
"What recording?""
May you like
Patricia answered:
"That's what I was hoping you could help me find.""
