Chapter 7: The Daughter He Lost

The woman standing outside our front door looked nothing like I expected.

She wasn’t angry.

She wasn’t dramatic.

She didn’t scream.

She simply stood there with tears in her eyes.

“Marcus?””

My husband froze.

The coffee cup in his hand slipped slightly.

“Lily?””

The young woman nodded.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Because sometimes the impossible doesn’t feel real when it finally happens.

Marcus had spent years believing his daughter was gone from his life forever.

And now she was standing in front of him.

Alive.

Older.

Carrying years of pain.

He stepped forward slowly.

“Is it really you?””

Lily smiled through tears.

“Yes, Dad.””

That was all it took.

Marcus broke.

He hugged her like he was afraid she would disappear again.

I watched from the doorway as the man who had held our family together finally allowed himself to fall apart.

Nia came downstairs after hearing voices.

She stopped when she saw Lily.

“Who is she?””

Marcus turned.

His eyes were red.

“Nia…”

Lily looked at her.

“I’m your sister.””

Nia’s expression changed.

“You have a sister?””

Marcus nodded.

“I should have told you.””

The sadness in his voice hurt.

But Lily shook her head.

“Don’t blame yourself.””

She looked around the house.

Especially at the walls.

“I know what happened.””

Marcus frowned.

“How?””

Lily looked away.

“Because Vanessa told me.””

The room went silent.

“When?”” Marcus asked.

“Years ago.””

Lily walked inside.

“She found me after I left home.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Left?””

Lily nodded.

“She convinced me you didn’t want me.””

My chest tightened.

“She said that?””

Lily laughed sadly.

“She said you started a new family because you wanted a fresh start.””

Marcus looked devastated.

“That wasn’t true.””

“I know now.””

Lily sat down.

“But back then, I was sixteen. I believed her.””

Nia sat beside her.

“Why didn’t you tell Dad?””

Lily looked at her.

“Because Vanessa made sure I had no way to.””

She explained that after leaving home, Vanessa had contacted her repeatedly.

She pretended to help.

Pretended to care.

Then slowly isolated her.

“She told me Dad would blame me.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I never would have.””

“I know.””

Lily looked at him.

“Now.””

The word hurt.

Because it meant Vanessa had succeeded for years.

That afternoon, Lily showed us the messages she had saved.

Vanessa had written things like:

“Your father is happier without the past.””

“Don’t destroy his new family.””

“You’re being selfish.””

But one message stood out.

A message sent recently.

After Vanessa started living with us.

“I finally have the house. Now I just need Marcus to stop feeling guilty about the daughter he lost.””

Marcus stared at the screen.

“She wrote that?””

Lily nodded.

“She wanted you to think losing me was your fault.””

He looked toward the stairs.

Toward Nia.

“She did the same thing to Nia.””

“Yes.””

Lily’s voice became quiet.

“She repeats the same pattern.””

That night, we gathered every piece of evidence.

The notebook.

The messages.

The legal documents.

Lily’s records.

But we still had one problem.

Vanessa had already started her legal attack.

And she was very good at making herself look like the victim.

The hearing was scheduled for the following week.

Before leaving, Lily stopped Marcus.

“Dad?””

“Yes?””

“There’s one more thing.””

He looked at her.

“Vanessa didn’t just manipulate me.””

She hesitated.

“She paid someone.””

Marcus frowned.

“Who?””

Lily handed him an envelope.

Inside was a name.

A private investigator.

And a report.

Marcus opened the first page.

Then his face changed.

May you like

Because the report contained information about Vanessa’s real identity.

And the name she had been hiding from everyone was not Vanessa at all.
