Amused

Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the Smile

The person everyone loved in public was not the person who lived inside our house.

That was the hardest truth to accept.

Vanessa was charming.

She brought homemade cookies to neighbors.

She volunteered at school events.

She posted pictures online about “family love” and “being grateful for every moment.””

People called her kind.

Generous.

A wonderful mother.

But inside our home, she had created a completely different world.

A world where my daughter learned to stay quiet.

Where she apologized before anyone accused her.

Where she hid her pain because she thought protecting us mattered more than protecting herself.

That afternoon, Marcus confronted Vanessa.

He didn’t do it alone.

He asked me to be there.

And he asked Vanessa to sit at the dining table.

She walked in wearing a calm expression.

Like she was entering a business meeting.

“I assume this is about Nia,” she said.

Marcus placed the folder down.

“It is.””

She glanced at it.

Then smiled.

“You went through my things?””

“You were keeping records about my daughter.””

Vanessa leaned back.

“Because I knew nobody would believe me.””

I almost laughed.

“Believe what?””

“That Nia has been manipulating this family.””

The words were so cruel that for a second, nobody spoke.

Marcus stared.

“She’s twelve.””

“And she knows exactly how to make people feel sorry for her.””

My hands clenched.

“You are talking about a child.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“And you are blinded by being her mother.””

Marcus stood.

“Enough.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You always choose her.””

The sentence revealed more than she intended.

Marcus slowly sat back down.

“Choose her?””

“Yes.””

Her voice cracked.

“You married me, but you never let me become your real family.””

There it was.

The real reason.

Not discipline.

Not chores.

Not responsibility.

Jealousy.

“She was already here when I met you,” Vanessa continued.

“Every decision had to consider Nia.””

Marcus shook his head.

“She is my daughter.””

“I know.””

Vanessa smiled sadly.

“And that’s the problem.””

The room went silent.

That night, Marcus moved Nia into our bedroom temporarily.

He slept on the couch.

He didn’t trust Vanessa around her.

Neither did I.

But we still didn’t know the full story.

The next day, something unexpected happened.

Caleb knocked on my office door.

“Can I talk to you?””

I looked at him.

“Of course.””

He walked inside slowly.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

He looked down.

“For not saying anything before.””

I sat beside him.

“Caleb, you’re a kid. This wasn’t your responsibility.””

“But I knew it was wrong.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“She told me not to tell because Nia would leave and it would be my fault.””

My heart broke.

“She said that?””

He nodded.

“She says things like that when she’s angry.””

“What things?””

Caleb swallowed.

“She said Nia wasn’t really part of our family.””

Before I could answer, Ava appeared at the doorway.

“She said worse.””

I looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

Ava held something in her hand.

A small notebook.

“She wrote this.””

My stomach tightened.

“Where did you get that?””

“Mom’s closet.””

Inside the notebook were dates.

Names.

Plans.

The first pages were about chores.

The next pages were about money.

And then I saw my name.

My hands went cold.

Vanessa had written:

“Marcus needs to believe Nia is becoming a problem.””

Below it:

“Once custody changes, everything becomes easier.””

I looked at Marcus.

He read the page.

His face went completely blank.

“Custody?””

Vanessa’s voice suddenly came from behind us.

Nobody had heard her enter.

“You shouldn’t have been looking through my things.””

Marcus turned.

“How long have you been planning this?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

And that scared me more than if she had denied it.

Marcus held up the notebook.

“Planning what?””

She stared at him.

Then quietly said:

“You don’t know the whole truth about Nia.””

Nia, standing in the hallway, froze.

Marcus noticed.

“What truth?””

Vanessa smiled.

May you like

A cold, confident smile.

“The truth about why she was never supposed to live here permanently.””
