Amused

Chapter 6: The Name She Tried To Erase

The letter on the kitchen table felt heavier than anything I had ever held.

Not because it was thick.

Not because it contained complicated legal words.

But because it carried a truth that had been hidden from us for years.

Marcus stood silently near the window, staring outside.

The man who usually had an answer for everything looked completely lost.

I looked down at the letter again.

The handwriting belonged to someone named Daniel Whitmore.

At the bottom, one sentence was underlined.

“I know what Vanessa did to your first family. I know why she really wanted to marry you.””

I looked at Marcus.

“Who is Daniel?””

For several seconds, he didn’t answer.

Then he sat down.

“Someone I should have listened to.””

My stomach tightened.

“Marcus.””

He rubbed his hands over his face.

“Before Vanessa, before you and I built this life… there was another chapter.””

I waited.

He looked toward the staircase.

Toward Nia’s room.

“I had a daughter before Nia.””

The words stopped me.

A daughter?

“You never told me.””

“I know.””

His voice broke slightly.

“Because I lost her.””

The room became quiet.

“What happened?””

Marcus looked at the floor.

“Her mother and I divorced when she was young. It was ugly. We both made mistakes. But after the divorce, my ex-wife moved away with her.””

He paused.

“Her name was Lily.””

I had never heard that name.

Not once.

“How old was she?””

“She was sixteen when I last saw her.””

My heart sank.

“And Vanessa knew about her?””

Marcus nodded.

“That’s what I’m afraid of.””

He opened the old documents from the box.

The first page was a printed email.

The sender was Daniel Whitmore.

The date was eleven years earlier.

Marcus read aloud.

“Marcus, I found out Vanessa has been asking questions about Lily. She contacted people from your old life. I don’t know why, but I think you need to be careful.””

I looked at him.

“Why would she search for your daughter?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Because we both already knew.

The question wasn’t why.

The question was what she had done.

That afternoon, Marcus called Daniel.

The phone rang three times.

Then a tired voice answered.

“Marcus?””

My husband closed his eyes.

“Daniel.””

A long silence followed.

“I wondered when you would finally find out.””

Marcus gripped the phone.

“Find out what?””

Daniel sighed.

“That Vanessa didn’t meet you by accident.””

The words landed like a stone.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying she knew exactly who you were.””

Marcus stood.

“How?””

“Because she worked with someone who knew your family.””

My skin went cold.

“Who?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then said:

“Your first wife’s sister.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

“She was feeding Vanessa information.””

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa wanted access to your life. Your money. Your house. Everything.””

I felt sick.

Marcus looked at me.

“Daniel, what about Lily?””

The silence on the other end was painful.

Finally, Daniel spoke.

“That’s the part I think you’re going to hate.””

My fingers tightened around the chair.

“What happened?””

“Lily didn’t leave because she wanted to.””

Marcus stopped breathing.

“What?””

Daniel continued.

“She disappeared after a fight with her mother.””

“And?””

“And Vanessa was the last person who spoke to her.””

The phone almost slipped from Marcus’s hand.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No, Vanessa wasn’t even part of my life then.””

“That’s what you believed.””

The room spun.

Because suddenly every strange moment, every hidden document, every cruel comment made sense.

Vanessa had not entered our family randomly.

She had been studying it.

Planning.

Waiting.

Marcus lowered the phone.

“Where is Lily now?””

Daniel answered.

“She’s alive.””

Marcus looked up.

My heart stopped.

“She’s alive?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Another pause.

Then Daniel said:

“She’s closer than you think.””

That night, Marcus barely slept.

Neither did I.

Because our daughter was not the first person Vanessa had tried to control.

She had done this before.

And the next morning, we discovered the one thing Vanessa never expected.

Lily had been looking for us too.
