Chapter 1: The Hands Behind Her Back

“Dad… Nia, show him your hands.””

The words came from my eight-year-old stepbrother, Caleb, but they hit the room like a glass breaking in silence.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

The television continued playing a cartoon. Popcorn kernels rested between Caleb’s fingers. My stepmother Vanessa stood beside the kitchen doorway with a forced smile slowly disappearing from her face.

And my twelve-year-old daughter, Nia, stood frozen near the sink.

Her hands were hidden behind her back.

I still remember the way my husband Marcus looked at her.

Not angry.

Not confused.

Terrified.

Because a parent knows when something is wrong.

He had been away for six days on a business trip, and he had come home two hours earlier than expected. I had been at work, finishing paperwork before heading back to the house. I thought Marcus would surprise us with dinner.

Instead, he walked into a nightmare.

The cold living room floor was wet.

A gray bucket sat near the couch.

A mop leaned against the wall.

And our daughter, our little girl who used to fall asleep holding stuffed animals, was standing there with a soaked oversized white T-shirt stuck to her back.

“Why is Nia doing all the cleaning?”” Marcus asked.

Vanessa reacted quickly.

Too quickly.

“Oh, honey, don’t make it sound worse than it is,” she said, laughing softly.

“She offered to help. You know how responsible she is.””

Marcus looked from Vanessa to Nia.

“Nia,” he said quietly, “did you offer?””

My daughter looked down.

That was when my heart sank.

Nia had always been honest. Even when she broke a lamp at age seven, she had admitted it before anyone asked.

But now she looked scared to speak.

“Sweetheart,” Marcus said, stepping closer, “tell me what happened.””

Nia swallowed.

“She said I couldn’t sit down until everything was clean.””

The room changed.

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

Marcus turned slowly.

“She?””

Nia looked toward Vanessa.

“She said Caleb and Ava shouldn’t have to do chores because they’re tired.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Marcus, you’re misunderstanding. I was teaching her responsibility.””

“Responsibility?”” Marcus repeated.

His voice was calm, but I knew that tone.

It was the tone he used when he was trying not to explode.

Caleb, still sitting on the couch, suddenly lowered his popcorn bowl.

“Dad…”

Vanessa snapped her head toward him.

“Caleb, don’t.””

But the little boy looked confused.

“Why can’t I tell him?””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“Go to your room.””

Caleb shook his head.

“This is what Mom makes her do every time you go away.””

Silence.

Even the cartoon voices suddenly sounded distant.

Marcus stared at his son.

“Every time?””

Caleb nodded slowly.

“She says Nia has to prove she belongs here.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“That is enough.””

But Ava, who had been quiet beside Caleb, looked at Marcus with wide eyes.

“Dad…”

Her small voice trembled.

“Nia’s hands.””

Marcus looked back at our daughter.

“Nia?””

Immediately, Nia moved her hands farther behind her.

“No.””

It was barely a whisper.

Marcus softened.

“Nia, please.””

Vanessa stepped between them.

“Marcus, don’t embarrass her.””

He looked at his wife.

“Move.””

Something about the way he said it made Vanessa stop.

Not because she was afraid.

Because she realized she had lost control.

Marcus held out his hand.

“Nia. I’m not angry with you.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t want you to know.””

Those words hurt more than anything else.

“What happened to your hands?”” Marcus asked.

Slowly, shaking, Nia brought them forward.

The room went completely silent.

Her palms were red and swollen.

Small cuts covered her fingers.

The skin around her nails was cracked from harsh cleaning chemicals.

Marcus stared.

He looked like someone had punched the air out of him.

“Who told you to do this?”” he whispered.

Nia looked at Vanessa.

And for the first time in her life, my daughter looked afraid of another adult.

“Mom said if I complained…”

She stopped.

Marcus crouched down.

“If you complained what?””

Nia wiped her eyes.

“She said I’d ruin the family.””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“That is ridiculous.””

But Marcus wasn’t looking at Vanessa anymore.

He was looking at Nia.

“What else happened while I was gone?””

Nia opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

And finally she said the sentence that made my husband stand up.

“She told me not to show you what was under my shirt.””

Marcus froze.

“Under your shirt?””

Nia nodded.

And Vanessa suddenly moved toward her.

“Marcus, you don’t need to—”

But he stepped back.

“What is under my daughter’s shirt?””

Nobody answered.

Then Nia whispered:

“The marks she told me to hide.””

Marcus turned pale.

May you like

And at that moment, he knew the floor wasn’t the only thing Vanessa had forced our daughter to clean.

Something much darker was waiting to be uncovered.
