Chapter 9: The Evidence He Couldn’t Erase
The message from Daniel stayed on my screen.
*“You should have listened when I told you to stop digging.””*
Auntie Renee read it once.
Then again.
Her expression changed with every second.
Not fear.
Not panic.
Something stronger.
Determination.
“He knows.””
I looked at her.
“He knows what?””
“That we found Emily.””
My stomach dropped.
“How?””
Lily stood up.
“He’s been watching.””
The room went silent.
I looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
She looked down.
“I mean my father always knows more than people think.””
Auntie Renee’s eyes narrowed.
“Lily.””
“I’m not defending him.””
Her voice cracked.
“I’m saying he has always been careful.””
She took a breath.
“He keeps records. He remembers conversations. He knows people’s habits.””
My skin crawled.
Because that was exactly what Daniel had done to me.
He had learned my fears.
My weaknesses.
The things that mattered most.
Then he used them.
Auntie Renee grabbed her phone.
“We’re going to Emily.””
I stood.
“Now?””
“Yes.””
“What if Daniel is there?””
She looked at me.
“Then we don’t face him alone.””
Lily nodded.
“She’s right.””
I looked at her.
“You’re coming?””
She hesitated.
Then nodded.
“I need to.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I spent years pretending I didn’t know who my father was.””
She looked toward the door.
“I’m done pretending.””
The drive to Emily’s house felt different from the one before.
Before, we were chasing answers.
Now, we were racing against time.
Auntie Renee drove carefully but quickly.
Lily sat in the back seat, staring out the window.
I watched her reflection.
She looked exhausted.
Like she had been carrying this weight long before I ever knew about it.
“Lily?””
She looked at me.
“Why didn’t you leave him?””
The question came out before I could stop it.
She didn’t get angry.
She just looked sad.
“Because he was still my father.””
I nodded slowly.
“I understand.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You do understand.””
A pause.
“That’s why I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“For what?””
“For knowing something was wrong and not finding you sooner.””
I didn’t know what to say.
Because part of me wanted to be angry.
But another part understood.
Fear could trap people.
Even adults.
Even people who knew better.
When we arrived at Emily’s house, the first thing we noticed was the open front door.
Auntie Renee stopped the car.
Nobody moved.
The silence was terrifying.
“Stay behind me,” she said.
I almost argued.
But then I remembered.
She wasn’t trying to control me.
She was trying to protect me.
We walked toward the house.
“Emily?”” Auntie Renee called.
No answer.
The living room was empty.
A chair was knocked over.
A glass was broken on the floor.
My heart started racing.
“Emily!””
A sound came from upstairs.
A weak voice.
“Renee?””
We ran.
Emily was sitting on the bedroom floor.
She was shaken, but awake.
Auntie Renee immediately helped her up.
“What happened?””
Emily looked terrified.
“He came here.””
My stomach tightened.
“Daniel?””
She nodded.
“He wanted the recording.””
“Where is it?””
Emily looked at me.
“You’re Maya?””
I nodded.
Her eyes filled with sadness.
“Your mother would be proud of you.””
I froze.
Nobody had said anything about my mother being proud of me in years.
“Where is the recording?””
Emily reached into her pocket.
Then she stopped.
Her face changed.
“No.””
Auntie Renee noticed.
“What?””
“He took my bag.””
My heart sank.
“The recording was inside?””
Emily nodded.
“He knew.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Lily whispered:
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“He didn’t take it.””
“What?””
She looked at us.
“My father wouldn’t destroy it.””
Auntie Renee frowned.
“Why?””
“Because he thinks he’s smarter than everyone.””
She swallowed.
“He likes keeping things.””
I didn’t understand.
“Keeping things?””
“Proof.””
Lily looked around the room.
“He keeps things because he believes they give him power.””
Emily slowly nodded.
“She’s right.””
Auntie Renee looked at her.
“You know where he keeps things?””
Lily hesitated.
“Yes.””
My heart jumped.
“Where?””
She looked at me.
“At his office.””
The place where Daniel had worked.
The place where he controlled everything.
Auntie Renee immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Lily looked surprised.
“No?””
“We are not walking into his territory.””
“But if the recording is there—”
“We find another way.””
Emily stepped forward.
“There may not be another way.””
Everyone looked at her.
She took a breath.
“Daniel knows I had the recording. He knows you know about it. He will move it.””
Auntie Renee looked frustrated.
“We need help.””
Emily nodded.
“I agree.””
For the first time, everyone understood.
This wasn’t about proving who was right anymore.
This was about stopping Daniel from rewriting everything.
Later that evening, after contacting the proper authorities and giving statements, we waited.
Waiting was the hardest part.
Because there was nothing left to do except sit with the truth.
I sat beside Auntie Renee.
“I’m sorry.””
She looked at me.
“For what?””
“For everything.””
She shook her head.
“You keep apologizing for things you didn’t do.””
I looked down.
“I hurt you.””
“Yes.””
Her honesty surprised me.
“You did hurt me.””
My eyes filled.
“But not because of what happened.””
She held my hand.
“You hurt me because you thought you had to suffer alone.””
That was the difference.
She wasn’t pretending everything was okay.
She wasn’t pretending the past didn’t happen.
She was saying the truth could hurt and still be survivable.
My phone buzzed.
Everyone looked.
Another message.
From Daniel.
Auntie Renee immediately stood.
“Don’t open it.””
But I already had.
It was a photo.
My heart stopped.
It was the document from my mother.
The one we thought was safe.
Underneath it was a message.
*“You’re looking for the wrong evidence.””*
Then another photo appeared.
A recording device.
An old one.
And a final message.
*“Your mother didn’t trust Emily.””*
I felt cold.
“What is he doing?””
Lily stared at the screen.
“He’s trying to confuse us.””
Another message arrived.
*“Ask Renee what happened the night your mother died.””*
The room went silent.
I looked at Auntie Renee.
Again.
Another secret.
Another piece of my life that everyone seemed to know except me.
“Auntie?””
She didn’t answer.
And that scared me more than anything.
“Maya…”
Her voice was shaking.
“I need to tell you something.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“No.””
She closed her eyes.
“I should have told you years ago.””
“Please.””
But she continued.
“Your mother didn’t die on her way home.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
Auntie Renee looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“She came to my house that night.””
The room went completely still.
“Why?””
Her voice broke.
“Because she was going to tell me about Daniel.””
I stared at her.
“Then what happened?””
Auntie Renee looked down.
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“She left before she could tell me everything.””
“Why?””
Auntie Renee’s eyes filled.
“Because Daniel arrived.””
My entire body froze.
“Daniel was there?””
She nodded.
“And after he left…”
She swallowed.
“Your mother was gone.””
Nobody spoke.
The truth was finally coming together.
But it was darker than any of us imagined.
Then my phone buzzed one last time.
A video file.
Sent from Daniel.
I pressed play.
The screen showed an old recording.
A room.
My mother.
And Daniel.
My mother’s voice came through the speaker.
“Daniel, if you’re hearing this, then you already know I found out.””
Daniel’s face appeared.
Younger.
Calm.
Dangerously calm.
Then my mother said the words that made my entire world stop.
“You can fool Renee.””
A pause.
“But you will never fool me.””
The recording cut off.
Only one sentence remained.
One sentence that told us there was still one final secret hidden.
May you like
My mother’s voice returned.
*“If anything happens to me, look for the person Daniel was trying to protect.””*
