Amused

Chapter 8: The Letter My Mother Left Behind

The message stayed on my phone.

*“Meet me alone if you want the rest.””*

I read it again.

And again.

Every time, the same fear returned.

Someone knew about my mother.

Someone knew about Daniel.

Someone had been holding onto a piece of the truth for years.

Auntie Renee stood beside me, staring at the screen.

“No.””

Her voice was immediate.

I looked at her.

“No?””

“You are not meeting anyone alone.””

I expected anger.

I expected her to tell me I was being reckless.

Instead, she looked terrified.

Not for herself.

For me.

“I need to know what it says.””

“I know.””

“Then why can’t I go?””

“Because whoever sent this knows exactly what they’re doing.””

She pointed at the phone.

“They waited until now.””

I looked down.

She was right.

The timing wasn’t random.

The moment Daniel’s lies started falling apart, someone appeared with proof.

Someone who knew we were desperate for answers.

Lily sat quietly on the couch.

She had been silent since seeing the document.

Finally, she spoke.

“Your aunt is right.””

I looked at her.

“You don’t think I should go either?””

“No.””

Her answer was immediate.

“Because that’s what my father does.””

Auntie Renee looked at her.

“What?””

“He creates situations where people feel like they have no choice.””

Lily looked at my phone.

“This person might be telling the truth.””

She paused.

“But they might also know you’re vulnerable right now.””

I hated how reasonable that sounded.

Because I was vulnerable.

I wanted answers so badly that I was willing to risk anything to get them.

And Daniel had always known that.

Auntie Renee sat beside me.

“Maya, your mother left that message because she wanted you safe.””

I stared at the document.

“But she also wanted the truth known.””

Auntie Renee didn’t answer.

Because she knew I was right.

For years, we had lived with questions.

Why did my mother seem worried before she died?

Why did she keep certain things hidden?

Why did she trust so few people?

And now, after all this time, we finally had a clue.

I looked at Lily.

“Do you know anything about this?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Did Daniel ever mention my mother?””

Her face changed.

“A few times.””

“What did he say?””

Lily hesitated.

“That she was difficult to manipulate.””

The room went silent.

My chest tightened.

My mother.

The woman I barely remembered.

The woman who left me too soon.

She had seen through him.

“Why didn’t you tell me this before?””

Lily looked ashamed.

“Because I was scared.””

I didn’t blame her.

Not anymore.

Fear had controlled all of us.

Different people.

Different reasons.

Same fear.

Auntie Renee stood up.

“Who sent the message?””

“I don’t know.””

“Can we find out?””

Lily nodded.

“Maybe.””

She took my phone carefully.

“Don’t reply yet.””

She studied the number.

Then her face changed.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“This isn’t a random number.””

My heart tightened.

“What do you mean?””

“It’s connected to my father.””

Auntie Renee stepped closer.

“How?””

Lily looked at the screen.

“Because this number used to belong to someone who worked with him.””

“Who?””

Lily hesitated.

Then whispered:

“His old assistant.””

I frowned.

“Daniel had an assistant?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t I know that?””

Lily looked at me sadly.

“Because he only showed people the parts of his life he wanted them to see.””

That sentence felt like the perfect description of him.

Daniel wasn’t just hiding one thing.

He was hiding entire versions of himself.

Auntie Renee took a deep breath.

“Find out who this person is.””

Lily nodded.

She spent the next several minutes searching through old contacts and messages.

Finally, she stopped.

“I found a name.””

I moved closer.

“Who?””

She turned the phone around.

The name appeared.

*Emily Parker.*

I looked at Auntie Renee.

Nothing.

No recognition.

Lily frowned.

“That’s strange.””

“What?””

“My father never deleted her contact.””

“Why is that strange?””

“Because he deleted everything else.””

I felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

“It means she mattered.””

Auntie Renee looked at me.

“We need to contact her.””

This time, nobody argued.

Not because it was safe.

Because we had run out of places to look.

Lily called.

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then a woman answered.

“Hello?””

Nobody spoke immediately.

Then Lily said:

“Emily?””

Silence.

A long silence.

“How did you get this number?””

Lily looked at me.

“We need your help.””

The woman’s voice changed.

“No.””

My heart sank.

“No?””

“I can’t be involved.””

“Please.””

“No.””

The fear in her voice was obvious.

Auntie Renee leaned toward the phone.

“Emily, my name is Renee.””

Another silence.

Then:

“Renee?””

“Yes.””

The woman inhaled sharply.

“I thought you’d never find out.””

Auntie Renee froze.

“Find out what?””

Emily didn’t answer right away.

Then she whispered:

“The truth about what Daniel did.””

My entire body went still.

“What truth?”” I asked.

The woman paused.

“Who is this?””

“My name is Maya.””

Silence.

Then a quiet gasp.

“Oh.””

The way she said it made my stomach twist.

“You’re her daughter.””

I looked at Auntie Renee.

“How do you know me?””

Emily’s voice became softer.

“Because I met your mother.””

The room stopped.

“You knew my mom?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before she died.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Emily sighed.

“Because Daniel made sure nobody could.””

Auntie Renee closed her eyes.

“Emily, please.””

“I’m sorry.””

Her voice shook.

“I should have said something years ago.””

“Then say it now.””

A long pause.

Then:

“Your mother found out what Daniel was doing.””

My heart pounded.

“What was he doing?””

“He was stealing from people who trusted him.””

I looked confused.

“What?””

Emily continued.

“He created fake documents. He moved money around. He convinced people he was helping them while secretly controlling everything.””

Auntie Renee’s face went pale.

“My mother knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she tell anyone?””

Emily was quiet.

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of Daniel?””

“Yes.””

The word hung in the air.

I looked at the document again.

The warning.

The message.

Everything connected.

“What happened the night my mother died?””

Nobody spoke.

Even Lily looked down.

Emily’s voice became barely a whisper.

“That’s the question I’ve been afraid to answer for years.””

My heart stopped.

“What do you mean?””

“Because I don’t know if your mother’s death was really an accident.””

The room went completely silent.

Auntie Renee covered her mouth.

“No.””

Emily continued quickly.

“I’m not saying I have proof.””

Her voice trembled.

“I’m saying your mother was preparing to expose him.””

My hands went cold.

“And then she died.””

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Then Emily said:

“There is one thing your mother left with me.””

My breath caught.

“What?””

“A recording.””

Auntie Renee looked shocked.

“A recording?””

“Yes.””

“Of what?””

Emily hesitated.

Then:

“Of Daniel admitting what he did.””

My heart started racing.

“Where is it?””

Another silence.

Then Emily answered.

“I kept it hidden because I was afraid he would find me.””

“Where?””

Emily lowered her voice.

“I can give it to you.””

I waited.

“But you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“He knows I have it.””

The room went cold.

“How?””

Emily’s voice cracked.

“Because Daniel is outside my house right now.””

Everyone froze.

Auntie Renee stood immediately.

“Emily, leave.””

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because he’s not alone.””

My blood turned cold.

“Who is with him?””

Emily didn’t answer.

Then the call ended.

At the exact same moment, my phone lit up.

A new message.

From Daniel.

One sentence.

*“You should have listened when I told you to stop digging.””*

I stared at the screen.

And for the first time, I understood something.

May you like

Daniel wasn’t trying to hide the truth anymore.

He was trying to destroy anyone who could reveal it.
