Amused

Chapter 7: The Night Everything Changed

The silence after my confession felt heavier than any argument.

Auntie Renee didn’t move.

She just stared at me.

Not with anger.

Not with disappointment.

With shock.

Because she was remembering the same night I had spent months trying to forget.

“The night I asked you to pick up the documents,” she whispered.

I nodded.

My throat felt tight.

“Yes.””

Auntie Renee looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

“What happened that night?””

I closed my eyes.

And suddenly, I was back there.

The old version of me.

The girl who still believed Daniel was someone safe.

The girl who still thought adults always knew what they were doing.

The girl who walked into that house without fear.

“I went there because you called me.””

Auntie Renee frowned.

“I called you?””

“Yes.””

“I never called you.””

My heart dropped.

“What?””

She shook her head slowly.

“Maya, I was at work that night.””

I felt cold.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No, Daniel said you told him to call me.””

Auntie Renee looked at Daniel.

And everything changed.

Because now she understood.

Daniel had created the reason for me to be there.

He had created the moment.

He had created the situation.

Lily covered her mouth.

“I knew it.””

Everyone looked at her.

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Lily.””

She shook her head.

“You told me you never planned anything.””

My stomach twisted.

“Planned?””

Daniel immediately looked at me.

“Maya, don’t listen to her.””

Auntie Renee stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Her voice was calm.

But there was something different in it now.

Something final.

“You have lied enough.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I understand more than I ever wanted to.””

The room felt smaller.

I looked at Lily.

“You knew?””

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“Not everything.””

“Then what did you know?””

She swallowed.

“I knew my father had done something wrong.””

Daniel looked away.

“And I knew he was afraid you would tell someone.””

My hands started shaking.

“He told you?””

“Not directly.””

Lily looked down.

“He never admits anything directly.””

That was exactly how Daniel worked.

Nothing was ever his fault.

Everything was always someone else’s misunderstanding.

Auntie Renee reached for her phone.

“I’m calling for help.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“No.””

It was the first time he sounded afraid.

Auntie Renee looked at him.

“No?””

“You need to think carefully.””

She stared at him.

“I have been thinking carefully for years.””

Daniel took a step forward.

“Maya made choices too.””

The words hit me.

Even now.

He was still doing it.

Trying to split the blame.

Trying to make people question me.

Auntie Renee’s face changed.

And I knew that sentence had destroyed whatever patience she had left.

“Do not.””

Her voice was low.

“Do not stand there and try to make her carry what you did.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Maya, you know the truth.””

I looked at him.

And for the first time, I wasn’t scared.

I was angry.

“No.””

His expression shifted.

“No?””

“No.””

My voice shook, but I continued.

“I know what happened to me.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stared at me.

Like he couldn’t understand how the person he had controlled for months was finally speaking.

“I know how scared I was.””

I took a breath.

“I know how many times I wanted to tell Auntie Renee.””

Another breath.

“And I know how many times you told me not to.””

Daniel’s face became harder.

“You’re twisting things.””

Lily stepped forward.

“Stop.””

He looked at her.

“You don’t get to do this anymore.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“You think you know everything?””

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“I know enough.””

Auntie Renee took my hand.

“Come on.””

This time, I followed.

But before we left, Daniel said something that stopped me.

“You still don’t know the whole truth.””

I turned.

I hated that part of me still listened.

“What?””

He looked at Auntie Renee.

Then at me.

“Ask her why she trusted me so much.””

Auntie Renee froze.

I looked at her.

“What does he mean?””

She didn’t answer.

And that scared me.

“Auntie?””

She looked away.

“Maya…”

My heart sank.

“What?””

She took a breath.

“There is something I never told you.””

The words felt impossible.

Not again.

Not another secret.

Not another thing everyone knew except me.

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Maya—”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“I can’t do this again.””

Auntie Renee looked devastated.

“I know.””

I looked between her and Daniel.

“Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me.””

My voice cracked.

“But nobody told me the truth.””

That was the first time Auntie Renee looked truly broken.

Because she knew I was right.

We left the building without another word.

The ride home was silent.

Lily came with us.

She sat in the back seat, staring out the window.

Three people.

Three people carrying secrets.

When we reached home, Auntie Renee made tea.

A normal thing.

A small thing.

But it felt strange.

Like we were pretending we were still the same family.

We weren’t.

Not anymore.

Finally, I looked at her.

“What didn’t you tell me?””

Auntie Renee sat across from me.

For a long time, she said nothing.

Then:

“Daniel wasn’t just someone I trusted.””

I waited.

“He was someone I knew before your mother died.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She nodded.

“Your mother knew him too.””

The room went silent.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Lily.

Even she looked surprised.

Auntie Renee continued.

“After your mother passed away, Daniel helped me with everything.””

My stomach tightened.

“He helped with paperwork. Repairs. Things I didn’t know how to handle.””

She looked down.

“I thought he was a good person.””

I whispered:

“So did I.””

She nodded sadly.

“I know.””

“But what does my mom have to do with this?””

Auntie Renee hesitated.

That hesitation scared me.

“Your mother didn’t completely trust him.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She warned me.””

“When?””

“Before she died.””

The room became completely silent.

I felt like the floor disappeared.

“What did she say?””

Auntie Renee looked at me.

“She said Daniel was good at making people feel like they needed him.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Because those words described exactly what he had done.

Auntie Renee wiped her eyes.

“I thought she was being cautious.””

“And now?””

“Now I think she saw something I didn’t.””

My phone buzzed.

Everyone looked at it.

A message.

From an unknown number.

Auntie Renee picked it up.

Her face changed.

“What?””

She handed it to me.

The message was short.

But it changed everything.

*“Maya, I found the proof you need.””*

Below it was a photo.

A document.

An old document.

Signed years ago.

With my mother’s name on it.

And one sentence written at the bottom:

*“If anything happens to me, Renee needs to know the truth about Daniel.””*

I stared at the screen.

My mother had known.

She had been afraid.

And she had left behind a warning.

A warning that nobody found until now.

Auntie Renee whispered:

“Where did that come from?””

I looked at the number.

Then another message appeared.

*“Meet me alone if you want the rest.””*

I felt my stomach drop.

Because whoever had sent it knew something we didn’t.

May you like

Something my mother had hidden.

And they wanted only me to hear it.
