Amused

Chapter 6: The Secret Behind My Daughter’s Name

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Not Cole.

Not my mother.

Not Vanessa.

Not even me.

The entire house seemed to hold its breath.

Then I laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because my mind had reached a place where pain didn’t feel real anymore.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

“I thought you knew.””

“Knew what?””

Cole stepped toward her.

“Vanessa, leave.””

I turned my head slowly.

“Leave?””

My voice was quiet.

“After she walked into my baby shower and told me you’ve been lying about my daughter?””

Cole stopped.

“She’s trying to hurt you.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“No, Cole. I’m trying to stop you from hurting her.””

That was the first time all day someone had spoken like they actually cared about me.

Not about protecting themselves.

Not about controlling the damage.

Me.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Start talking.””

Cole shook his head.

“Emily, don’t listen to her.””

I pointed toward him.

“You have spent months deciding what I should know.””

My hand dropped.

“Now I decide.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa nodded slowly.

Then she sat down.

“I met Cole eighteen months ago.””

My stomach twisted.

Before the pregnancy.

Before the baby shower.

Before I knew anything.

“He told me he was unhappy,” she continued.

Cole looked away.

“He said his marriage was already falling apart.””

I stared at my husband.

“That’s what you told her?””

He didn’t answer.

Vanessa continued.

“He said you two were basically separated emotionally. That you stayed together because of family expectations.””

A bitter smile crossed my face.

“Interesting.””

Because six months before that, Cole had taken me on a surprise weekend trip and told me I was his forever.

“He lied to both of us,” Vanessa said.

I looked at her.

“Why are you here?””

Her fingers tightened around her purse.

“Because I found out he was still sleeping with you.””

The words hit differently.

Not because they shocked me.

Because they reminded me of how ordinary my life had been while all this was happening.

I had cooked dinner.

Folded laundry.

Painted a nursery.

While my husband lived another life.

Vanessa swallowed.

“When I found out you were pregnant, I ended things.””

“Why?””

“Because I thought I was the other woman.””

She looked at Cole.

“I didn’t know he was making me believe he was leaving.””

Cole finally spoke.

“That’s not true.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“You promised me.””

My heart sank.

“What did he promise?””

Cole looked trapped.

Vanessa answered.

“He promised after the baby was born, he would tell you.””

The room went still.

“Tell me what?””

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“That he wanted custody.””

My hand immediately went to my belly.

My baby.

My daughter.

The room suddenly felt too small.

“What?””

Cole stepped forward.

“Emily, listen.””

“No.””

“I never wanted to take her from you.””

“You were planning to leave me.””

“No.””

“You were planning to build a life with another woman.””

His face changed.

“That was before.””

Before.

That word made me furious.

Before what?

Before he realized he could lose everything?

Before he saw me as a person again?

Rachel spoke quietly.

“Cole, is it true?””

He didn’t answer.

My aunt looked horrified.

“You were going to use the baby?””

Cole shook his head.

“I was scared.””

I stared at him.

“Scared?””

He looked at me.

“Yes.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“You were scared?””

My voice rose.

“I was the one carrying your child.””

“I know.””

“I was the one whose body changed.””

“I know.””

“I was the one who had nightmares about being a good mother.””

“I know.””

“And you were scared?””

He looked down.

“I didn’t know what I wanted.””

I nodded.

“That’s the first honest thing you’ve said.””

The baby kicked.

A small movement.

A reminder.

I was not alone.

I placed my hand over my stomach.

Then I looked at Cole.

“You don’t get to decide where she belongs.””

His face fell.

“Emily.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You lost that privilege.””

The next morning, I left.

I didn’t pack everything.

I didn’t scream.

I didn’t destroy his belongings.

I simply walked upstairs, grabbed a suitcase, and put in the things I needed.

My clothes.

My daughter’s ultrasound pictures.

The little stuffed rabbit Cole bought when we found out we were having a girl.

I almost left it behind.

Almost.

Then I remembered something.

The rabbit was not his.

It was my daughter’s.

And she deserved to have things chosen with love, not attached to betrayal.

At my sister’s house, I finally slept.

For the first time in weeks, I slept without pretending.

But at 3:17 in the morning, my phone rang.

I thought it was Cole.

It wasn’t.

It was the hospital.

“Mrs. Carter?””

My heart stopped.

“Yes?””

“There’s something in your medical file that requires immediate attention.””

I sat up.

“What?””

The nurse hesitated.

“Your husband requested a change to your prenatal records.””

I felt cold.

“What kind of change?””

May you like

The nurse lowered her voice.

“He listed himself as the only authorized parent for medical decisions after delivery.””
