Amused

Chapter 1: The Pantry Door

The first thing I noticed was not the kiss.

It was the silence.

My baby shower was supposed to be the happiest day of my life. The house was full of pink flowers, tiny dresses, laughing friends, and relatives who kept telling me I was glowing.

But when I pulled open the pantry door looking for more napkins, I found the two people I trusted most standing in the shadows together.

My husband’s hand was on my mother’s waist.

My mother’s fingers were tangled in his shirt.

And their lips were pressed together.

For a moment, my brain refused to understand what my eyes were seeing.

The living room was only twenty feet away. I could hear my friends laughing. I could hear my aunt telling someone about the cake. I could hear the playlist I had spent hours choosing for my daughter’s celebration.

My daughter.

The baby growing inside me.

The baby my husband and my mother had both promised to protect.

“Mom?””

The word left my mouth before I could stop it.

Darla jerked away so quickly she knocked a stack of plastic cups off the counter. One rolled across the kitchen floor and stopped against my bare foot.

Cole froze.

My husband.

The man who had kissed my forehead every morning.

The man who had whispered that he couldn’t wait to meet our daughter.

The man who had held my belly last night and said, “I already know she’s going to be stubborn like you.””

Now he was standing beside my mother like he belonged there.

Darla’s face drained of color.

“Emily…” she whispered.

I looked at her hand.

That was the thing that broke me.

Not the kiss.

Not even Cole standing there.

Her hand.

The same hand that had rested on my stomach ten minutes earlier.

The same hand that had trembled when she felt my baby kick.

She had smiled at me.

“You felt her kick,” I said quietly.

Neither of them answered.

“You felt her kick ten minutes ago.””

My voice cracked.

Darla started crying.

“Emily, please. Let me explain.””

I stared at her.

Explain what?

Explain why my mother was kissing my husband while wearing the necklace I gave her last Christmas?

Explain why the man who was supposed to be my daughter’s father had his hands on another woman?

Explain why that woman was the person who raised me?

Cole stepped forward.

“Emily, listen to me.””

I lifted my hand.

“Don’t.””

“Please.””

“Don’t come closer.””

He stopped for half a second.

Then he took another step.

Something inside me snapped.

I grabbed the nearest thing I could reach.

A stack of paper party cups.

I threw them.

“GET AWAY FROM ME!””

The cups flew across the kitchen.

They bounced off the cabinets and scattered everywhere.

Someone from the living room called my name.

“Emily? Are you okay?””

The cheerful voice made my stomach twist.

They were still celebrating.

They were still smiling.

They were still waiting to open gifts for a baby whose world had just collapsed.

Darla reached toward me.

I immediately wrapped one arm around my belly and stepped away.

“Don’t touch me.””

Her hand fell.

“Emily, I love you.””

I laughed once.

It was an ugly sound.

A broken sound.

“You love me?””

Tears blurred my vision.

“You were touching my baby.””

Cole’s face changed.

For a second, I saw regret.

But regret wasn’t the same as innocence.

I backed toward the kitchen doorway.

I had a choice.

I could scream.

I could drag them both into the living room and let everyone see exactly who they were.

Or I could walk out there and protect my daughter’s celebration from becoming a memory of betrayal.

My hand rested on my stomach.

My baby moved.

A tiny kick.

The same kick my mother had felt.

I closed my eyes.

“I need you both to stay here.””

Cole swallowed.

“Emily—”

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“You don’t get to follow me.””

I walked back into the living room.

Everyone turned.

My best friend Sarah smiled immediately.

“There you are! We were wondering where you disappeared to.””

I forced my lips upward.

A fake smile.

The hardest thing I had ever done.

“Sorry,” I whispered.

Sarah tilted her head.

“Are you okay?””

Before I could answer, I heard footsteps behind me.

Cole.

He had followed me.

And then my phone vibrated.

One message appeared on the screen.

A number I didn’t recognize.

Three words.

*You deserve the truth.*

Underneath was a photo.

A photo that made my blood run cold.

Because it wasn’t from today.

May you like

It was from months ago.

And my husband wasn’t kissing my mother for the first time in that pantry.
