Amused

Chapter 4: The Promise They Broke

The room changed after Rachel spoke.

The air felt heavier.

Sarah looked at me.

“What is she talking about?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because I was still trying to understand how many people had known.

How many people had looked me in the eyes while hiding the truth.

Rachel walked inside slowly.

She looked older than she had that morning.

Like guilt had aged her.

“Emily, I wanted to tell you.””

I stared at her.

“When?””

She didn’t answer.

That was the problem.

Nobody had an answer.

Nobody could explain why protecting me meant lying to me.

My aunt sat down.

“I found out about Cole and Darla after I saw them together.””

“When?””

“Five months ago.””

Five months.

I closed my eyes.

Five months of pretending.

Five months of my husband coming home and kissing me goodnight.

Five months of my mother asking about my pregnancy.

Five months of everyone knowing except me.

“You all let me live inside a lie.””

Darla whispered, “I was afraid.””

I looked at her.

“Of what?””

“Of losing you.””

I shook my head.

“You lost me when you chose him.””

Cole stepped forward.

“Emily, please.””

I looked at him.

“Why her?””

He looked confused.

“What?””

“Why my mother?””

His face fell.

And that hurt more than anger would have.

Because I saw hesitation.

Like he had an answer.

Like he had thought about it.

“I don’t know.””

I laughed.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“You destroyed our marriage and you don’t know why?””

He rubbed his face.

“I was angry. I was lost. Things between us were difficult.””

I stared at him.

“Things were difficult?””

My voice rose.

“I was pregnant with your child.””

“I know.””

“I was scared.””

“I know.””

“I needed my husband.””

His eyes filled.

“I know.””

“And you went to my mother.””

Silence.

Rachel looked away.

Sarah walked over and took my hand.

I almost pulled away.

Not because of her.

Because I didn’t know who was safe anymore.

“I’m sorry,” Sarah whispered.

I looked at her.

“Did you know?””

Her eyes widened.

“No.””

I believed her.

Because she looked as shocked as I felt.

The baby kicked.

I froze.

Everyone noticed.

Darla looked at my stomach.

A habit.

A memory.

A betrayal.

She reached out slightly.

Then stopped herself.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

And for the first time, I saw my mother not as my mother.

But as a woman who had made a choice.

A terrible one.

A selfish one.

A choice that changed my life.

I turned to Cole.

“You need to leave.””

His face tightened.

“Emily.””

“Leave.””

“Where am I supposed to go?””

I stared at him.

“That’s not my problem anymore.””

He looked like he wanted to argue.

But then his phone buzzed again.

He looked down.

His expression changed.

“What?””

I noticed.

“What is it?””

He didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Who is texting you?””

Slowly, he turned the phone around.

A message appeared.

One sentence.

*She knows about the second woman.*

My blood went cold.

Second woman?

I looked at Cole.

Then at Darla.

“What second woman?””

Nobody spoke.

May you like

And then my mother whispered something that made my entire body freeze.

“It wasn’t only me.””
