Chapter 5: The Other Secret
I thought betrayal had a limit.
I thought there was a point where the pain became so big that nothing could surprise you anymore.
I was wrong.
Because standing in my kitchen, surrounded by baby decorations and people who loved me, I learned that the worst part of being betrayed wasn’t losing someone.
It was discovering how long they had been pretending.
“Who is she?””
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
Cole looked at me.
“Emily…”
“Who is she?””
Darla closed her eyes.
“Cole.””
That one word told me she knew.
I turned toward my mother.
“You knew about another woman?””
She started crying again.
“I suspected.””
“Suspected?””
I stepped closer.
“You suspected my husband was cheating with someone else and you still slept with him?””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then Cole finally spoke.
“Her name is Vanessa.””
The name meant nothing.
And somehow that made it worse.
Because there was a whole person outside my life who had been part of my husband’s secrets.
“When?””
He looked down.
“Before Darla.””
I felt dizzy.
“How long?””
“Emily…”
“How long?””
His voice dropped.
“Almost a year.””
Sarah covered her mouth.
Rachel looked away.
I stared at the man I married.
A year.
A year of lies.
A year of excuses.
A year of late meetings.
A year of him telling me he was tired.
I remembered every night.
Every missed dinner.
Every time I apologized for needing him.
Every time I wondered if pregnancy had changed me too much.
It wasn’t me.
It was him.
“I was going to fix it,” Cole whispered.
I looked at him.
“You were going to fix it?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
He said nothing.
“After the baby was born?””
His silence answered.
I nodded slowly.
“You were going to wait until I was recovering from giving birth?””
“No.””
“Until I was exhausted?””
“No.””
“Until I was too busy being a mother to notice?””
“Emily, stop.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
Because he was finally uncomfortable.
Because the truth finally hurt him too.
The front door opened.
A woman’s voice came from the hallway.
“Cole?””
Everyone froze.
I turned.
A woman stood there holding a small purse.
She looked around at the decorations.
At the people.
At me.
Then her face changed.
Because she knew exactly where she was.
“Vanessa,” Cole whispered.
My hands went cold.
The woman looked at me.
“I can explain.””
I almost smiled.
Everyone always said that.
The words people used when there was nothing they could explain.
I looked at my husband.
Then my mother.
Then the stranger who had just walked into my daughter’s baby shower.
And somehow, she looked more afraid than anyone.
“Why are you here?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I came because I thought he told you.””
“Told me what?””
Her eyes moved to Cole.
Then back to me.
“He didn’t tell you?””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What?””
She took a shaky breath.
“Emily…”
Cole stepped forward.
“Vanessa, don’t.””
But she ignored him.
And then she said the sentence that changed everything.
“Your husband didn’t just betray you.””
May you like
She looked at my belly.
“He’s been lying about your baby too.””
