Chapter 8: The Doctor Who Changed Everything
Mara stared at the name on the screen.
Dr. Evelyn Whitmore.
Her aunt.
Her mother’s younger sister.
The woman who had held Mara the day she was born.
The woman who had attended every important medical appointment in her life.
The woman who had sat beside Mara after her mother died and promised, “You’ll never be alone.””
Those words suddenly felt like they belonged to someone else.
Someone Mara didn’t recognize.
“No.””
Her voice was barely audible.
Daniel looked at her.
“Mara…”
“No.””
She shook her head.
“She wouldn’t.””
Nobody responded.
Because nobody wanted to be the first person to say the obvious.
That the people who hurt us are rarely strangers.
They are usually the ones who already know where we keep our keys.
Where we hide our fears.
Where our hearts are weakest.
Grant stepped toward the phone.
“Call her.””
Mara looked at him.
The fact that he sounded desperate didn’t comfort her.
It scared her.
“You knew about Evelyn?””
Grant hesitated.
Only for a second.
But Mara saw it.
“You knew.””
“No.””
“You knew her name.””
Grant looked away.
“Mara, listen—”
“Stop.””
Her voice cut through the room.
“Stop telling me to listen.””
She held up the phone.
“Everyone has been telling me what I need to hear for years.””
Her eyes moved across the room.
“Tonight I want answers.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Noah took out his phone.
“I’ll call the clinic.””
Mara looked at him.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
She swallowed.
“I’m going.””
Ethan immediately shook his head.
“Absolutely not.””
“I need to know.””
“You’re pregnant.””
“And I’m also the person this affects most.””
Ethan’s expression softened.
“Mara.””
She looked at him.
“I spent years letting everyone else make decisions because they said they were protecting me.””
A pause.
“I’m done.””
The room went quiet.
Daniel looked down.
Because he knew she wasn’t just talking about Grant.
She was talking about him too.
Mara grabbed her coat.
Grant moved.
“I’m coming with you.””
She stopped.
Then slowly turned.
“No.””
His face changed.
“Mara.””
“You don’t get to stand beside me when the truth is convenient.””
The words hit him harder than she expected.
Good.
For once, she wanted him to feel something.
Not pain.
Not revenge.
Just reality.
Ethan stepped beside her.
“I’ll go.””
Noah nodded.
“So will I.””
Daniel hesitated.
Then stepped forward.
“I should come.””
Mara looked at him.
For a moment, she saw the father she remembered.
The man who carried her on his shoulders.
The man who taught her how to ride a bike.
The man she had mourned.
Then she remembered the empty grave.
The years without answers.
“You can come.””
Daniel looked relieved.
“But you’re going to tell me everything.””
He nodded.
“I will.””
“And no more protecting me.””
His eyes filled.
“No more.””
Grant watched them leave.
And Mara noticed something strange.
He didn’t try to stop her.
That scared her more than if he had.
Because Grant Whitmore always fought when he was losing control.
Unless he knew something worse was coming.
The clinic was only fifteen minutes away.
But the drive felt endless.
Rain blurred the windows.
The city moved around them like nothing had happened.
Like Mara’s entire life hadn’t cracked open in one night.
Ethan drove.
Noah sat beside him.
Daniel sat in the back with Mara.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
Then Daniel broke the silence.
“I’m sorry.””
Mara stared out the window.
“I know.””
“I mean it.””
She looked at him.
“That’s the problem.””
Daniel swallowed.
“I don’t expect forgiveness.””
“Good.””
The honesty surprised even her.
But she continued.
“I don’t know if I can forgive you.””
Daniel nodded.
“I understand.””
She looked away.
“But I also don’t know if I can hate you.””
A tear moved down his face.
“Mara…”
“I loved you.””
The words hurt.
“Every day for eight years, I missed you.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I missed you too.””
“Then why?””
His voice broke.
“Because Grant found out something about the company.””
“The same thing?””
Daniel nodded.
“He found a way to destroy me.””
“How?””
Daniel looked at her.
“He threatened you.””
Mara frowned.
“What?””
“He knew you were planning to leave me.””
Her heart stopped.
“I was?””
Daniel nodded.
“Not because you told me.””
A pause.
“Because your mother’s journal mentioned it.””
Mara froze.
“My mother’s journal?””
Daniel looked down.
“Before she died, she wrote letters.””
“To who?””
“To you.””
Mara felt a chill.
“Where are they?””
Daniel’s silence answered.
She stared.
“Grant has them.””
Everyone in the car went quiet.
Ethan tightened his grip on the steering wheel.
“He has your mother’s journals?””
Daniel nodded.
“I think so.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at Mara.
“Because your mother knew the truth about him.””
The car became silent.
Mara whispered:
“My mother knew?””
“Yes.””
“What truth?””
Daniel looked away.
“I don’t know all of it.””
“You’re telling me my mother, my father, and my aunt all knew something about Grant?””
Daniel nodded.
“And nobody told me?””
“I was trying to stop it.””
“No.””
Her voice hardened.
“You were trying to control it.””
Daniel accepted the words.
Because he knew they were true.
When they arrived at the clinic, the lights were still on.
Dr. Evelyn Whitmore was waiting.
That alone told Mara everything.
A person who had nothing to hide didn’t wait.
They arrived because they were afraid.
Evelyn stood in the hallway.
She looked older than Mara remembered.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like carrying a secret had aged her.
“Mara.””
Mara stopped.
The woman who had once felt like family now felt like a stranger.
“Why?””
Evelyn’s eyes filled.
“I’m sorry.””
Mara almost laughed.
Again.
That word.
“I don’t want an apology.””
Evelyn nodded.
“I know.””
“Then tell me.””
The doctor looked at Ethan, Noah, and Daniel.
Then back at Mara.
“You need to see something.””
She handed her a file.
Mara opened it.
Inside were medical records.
Her medical records.
But something was different.
The dates.
The notes.
The results.
She looked up.
“This isn’t my file.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“It is.””
“No.””
Mara pointed.
“My blood type.””
Evelyn nodded.
“Correct.””
“My original test results?””
“Yes.””
Mara flipped the page.
Then froze.
Because the result was not what she expected.
The DNA section was there.
A section she had never seen before.
A section Grant claimed existed.
But the result was different.
Mara looked at Evelyn.
“Why was this changed?””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
The guilt on her face was enough.
“You changed it.””
A tear fell from Evelyn’s eyes.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
Ethan stepped forward.
“Why?””
Evelyn looked at Mara.
“Because Grant threatened me.””
Mara felt numb.
“Everyone was threatened.””
Evelyn nodded.
“I know.””
“No.””
Mara shook her head.
“You don’t know.””
Her voice cracked.
“You all made choices.””
Evelyn looked devastated.
“Yes.””
She whispered.
“We did.””
Mara looked at the papers again.
“What did the original test say?””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Then answered:
“That the baby is yours and Grant’s.””
Everyone froze.
Mara looked up.
“What?””
Evelyn continued.
“The DNA test was altered.””
Grant’s accusation.
The report.
The doubt.
All of it.
A lie.
Mara felt sick.
“Why would Grant believe it?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“Because someone wanted him to.””
Noah frowned.
“Who?””
Evelyn looked toward Daniel.
Then at Mara.
“I don’t know.””
A pause.
“But I know why.””
Mara stared.
“Why?””
Evelyn’s voice became quieter.
“Because if Grant believed the baby wasn’t his…”
She looked toward the door.
“…he would have a reason to destroy the marriage.””
Mara felt cold.
The baby wasn’t the weakness.
The baby was the target.
“Who changed the test?””
Evelyn looked down.
“I don’t know.””
Then her phone rang.
Everyone looked.
She answered.
Her face changed instantly.
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“No.””
Mara watched her.
“What happened?””
Evelyn slowly lowered the phone.
Her hands were shaking.
“It’s Grant.””
Everyone froze.
“What about him?””
Evelyn looked at Mara.
“He found out we were here.””
Mara felt a chill.
“How?””
Evelyn whispered:
“Because someone sent him the clinic records.””
Noah’s expression changed.
“Someone inside the clinic?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.””
She looked terrified.
“Someone who has access to everything.””
Mara stared.
“Who?””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
She just looked at Daniel.
And said:
“The same person who changed your father’s death records.””
Nobody moved.
Because that meant one thing.
The person behind everything wasn’t just protecting Grant.
They had been controlling the truth for years.
Then Mara’s phone buzzed.
A new message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
*You’re looking in the wrong place, Mara. Grant is not the person you should fear.*
She stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
*Ask your father why he really came back.*
Mara slowly looked at Daniel.
Her father’s face went pale.
May you like
Because whatever answer was coming next…
was the one secret he had never intended to tell her.
