Chapter 7: The Truth About the Baby
For a moment, Mara forgot how to breathe.
The words remained suspended in the air.
*Grant isn’t the baby’s father.*
A sentence.
Seven words.
And somehow they carried more weight than every lie she had uncovered that night.
She looked at Grant.
Not because she believed Vanessa.
Not because she trusted anyone anymore.
But because she needed to see his reaction.
A person could control words.
They could create stories.
They could manipulate facts.
But fear was harder to fake.
And Grant looked terrified.
Not confused.
Not offended.
Terrified.
“Say something.””
Mara’s voice was barely above a whisper.
Grant stared at her.
“Mara…”
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Don’t say my name like that.””
His face tightened.
“Please.””
The word almost sounded unfamiliar coming from him.
Grant Whitmore didn’t beg.
He negotiated.
He persuaded.
He convinced.
But he didn’t beg.
Not until now.
Ethan stepped between them.
“You have five seconds to start explaining.””
Grant looked at him.
“This isn’t your conversation.””
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“You lost the right to decide that when you hit her.””
Grant looked away.
Mara watched him.
Every second of silence was another answer.
“You knew,” she whispered.
Grant finally looked back.
“Mara, I need you to understand—”
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“I need you to answer.””
She pointed toward the phone.
“Is she lying?””
Nobody moved.
Grant looked at the screen.
Vanessa was still connected.
Waiting.
Then Grant said the one thing that hurt more than a denial.
“I don’t know what Vanessa thinks she knows.””
Mara closed her eyes.
That was not an answer.
That was a man searching for another way out.
“You’re still doing it.””
Grant frowned.
“Doing what?””
“Talking around the truth.””
Her voice became stronger.
“You’ve spent years making me doubt myself.””
She touched her stomach.
“And now you’re doing it again.””
Daniel looked at Grant with disappointment.
“You knew.””
Grant looked at him.
“You don’t understand.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“I understand perfectly.””
The sadness in his tone was worse than anger.
“You became exactly the kind of man I warned Mara about.””
Grant’s face darkened.
“Don’t pretend you know anything about my choices.””
Daniel looked at him.
“I know enough.””
He glanced toward Mara.
“I know my daughter trusted you.””
Silence.
“And I know you used that trust as a weapon.””
Grant’s jaw tightened.
Then Vanessa’s voice came through the phone.
“Mara.””
Everyone looked at the device.
Mara picked it up.
“What?””
There was a long pause.
Then Vanessa said:
“I’m sorry.””
Mara laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because she had heard those words too many times tonight.
Everyone was sorry.
Everyone had regrets.
But regrets didn’t undo damage.
“Why?””
Vanessa started crying.
“Because I thought I could fix it.””
Mara froze.
“What does that mean?””
“I thought if I helped Grant, I could stop something worse from happening.””
Ethan looked confused.
“Stop what?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then:
“Grant wasn’t trying to leave Mara.””
Everyone went quiet.
Mara felt her stomach tighten.
“What?””
“He was trying to erase her.””
The words landed heavily.
Vanessa continued.
“The divorce papers weren’t about ending the marriage.””
Noah looked at the documents.
“Then what were they?””
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
“They were part of a legal transfer.””
Mara looked at Noah.
He immediately understood.
“A transfer of assets.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.””
Mara stared at Grant.
“You weren’t leaving me.””
Grant didn’t answer.
“You were taking my shares.””
Silence.
“You were taking my company.””
Silence.
“You were taking everything my family built.””
Grant finally spoke.
“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.””
Mara looked at him.
“How was it supposed to happen?””
His eyes dropped.
And that was the moment.
The exact moment.
She realized she had been married to someone who had planned her destruction so carefully that even now, after being exposed, he still thought the problem was the timing.
Not the betrayal.
Not the cruelty.
The timing.
Vanessa spoke again.
“Mara, there’s something else.””
Mara closed her eyes.
Of course there was.
“What?””
Vanessa’s voice shook.
“The baby.””
Everyone became silent.
“What about my baby?””
Grant suddenly stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
Mara turned.
“Why are you telling her not to talk?””
Grant’s expression changed.
For the first time, anger appeared.
Not toward Mara.
Toward Vanessa.
“Because she doesn’t know what she’s saying.””
Vanessa laughed sadly.
“I know exactly what I’m saying.””
Grant’s voice sharpened.
“Vanessa.””
“No.””
The woman on the phone sounded stronger now.
“You promised me you would protect her.””
Mara froze.
“What?””
Grant said nothing.
Vanessa continued.
“You told me you weren’t going to hurt Mara.””
Mara stared at him.
“You talked about me?””
Grant looked away.
“When?””
Vanessa answered.
“Before the divorce papers.””
Mara felt sick.
The betrayal wasn’t just happening around her.
It was happening in conversations she never knew existed.
“She asked you for help.””
Mara looked at Vanessa.
“Why?””
A long pause.
Then Vanessa said:
“Because Grant was planning something bigger.””
Noah stepped closer.
“What bigger?””
Vanessa’s breathing became uneven.
“I don’t know everything.””
“That’s not enough,” Ethan said.
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“But I know this.””
A pause.
“Grant was afraid of one thing.””
Mara looked at him.
“What?””
Vanessa whispered:
“The baby’s DNA test.””
The room froze.
Grant’s face changed instantly.
Mara saw it.
Everyone saw it.
And suddenly, every impossible piece started fitting together.
“The DNA test?””
Mara looked at Grant.
“You ordered one?””
Grant didn’t answer.
Her voice rose.
“You tested my baby?””
“I needed to know.””
The words came out before he could stop them.
Mara stared.
There it was.
The truth.
Not a confession.
But enough.
“You needed to know?””
Her eyes filled.
“You thought I cheated?””
Grant shook his head.
“No.””
“Then why?””
Grant looked broken for the first time.
“Because someone told me the baby wasn’t mine.””
Mara’s mind raced.
“Who?””
Grant looked at the phone.
Everyone followed his gaze.
Vanessa went silent.
Then Daniel spoke.
“Who told you?””
Grant looked around the room.
At Mara.
At her father.
At the brothers.
Then he whispered:
“Your doctor.””
Nobody moved.
Mara felt cold.
“My doctor?””
Grant nodded.
“Three weeks ago.””
“That’s impossible.””
Grant’s voice cracked.
“I received a report.””
Noah immediately stepped forward.
“Where is it?””
Grant looked at him.
“I destroyed it.””
Ethan’s face hardened.
“Why?””
“Because I didn’t believe it.””
Mara stared.
“You destroyed proof?””
Grant shook his head.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Mara almost couldn’t believe it.
“You keep saying that.””
She stepped closer.
“You keep using those words.””
Her hand rested over her stomach.
“But everything you do destroys me.””
Grant looked at her.
“I was trying to find out the truth before hurting you.””
She stared.
“And your solution was to cheat?””
His silence answered.
Mara turned away.
She couldn’t look at him.
Not anymore.
Then Noah’s phone suddenly buzzed.
He looked down.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Ethan asked.
Noah didn’t respond.
He read the message twice.
Then slowly looked at Mara.
“It’s from the hospital.””
Mara’s heart stopped.
“What hospital?””
Noah turned the screen around.
A name appeared.
The maternity clinic where Mara had gone for her checkups.
The message was short.
*We need to speak with you immediately. There has been a mistake in your prenatal records.*
Mara felt the blood leave her face.
A mistake.
The same phrase everyone used when the truth was too dangerous to say.
Then another message appeared.
This one was longer.
And it was addressed to her.
*Mara Whitmore, please come alone. We need to explain what happened to your original test results.*
Her fingers trembled.
Original test results.
Not Grant’s report.
Not Vanessa’s claim.
Not anyone’s story.
The original.
Mara looked at Grant.
He looked just as shocked.
Which meant one thing.
He didn’t know either.
And somewhere out there was someone who had changed the truth before it ever reached her.
Then Noah noticed something else.
At the bottom of the message was a sender name.
A name Mara recognized.
A name that made her heart drop.
Because it belonged to the one person she thought had been protecting her.
*Dr. Evelyn Whitmore.*
Her mother’s sister.
Her family’s trusted doctor.
The woman who had delivered Mara herself.
The woman who had kept every medical secret in the family for thirty years.
Mara whispered:
“No…”
Daniel looked at the screen.
And his face turned pale.
May you like
Because he knew exactly what that meant.
Someone in their family had been controlling the truth from the beginning.
