Chapter 6: The Secret Inside the Message
Mara read the message again.
Then again.
The words didn’t change.
They stayed there on the screen, glowing against the darkness of the dining room.
*You finally know the truth about Grant. Now find out what he did to your baby’s father.*
Her fingers went numb.
Her first thought was confusion.
Her second was fear.
Her third was something much worse.
A possibility she didn’t want to consider.
Because there was only one reason someone would send a message like that.
They weren’t guessing.
They were revealing.
“Mara?””
Ethan’s voice pulled her back.
She looked up slowly.
Everyone was watching her.
The room that had already held too many secrets suddenly felt smaller.
“What does it say?”” Noah asked.
Mara didn’t answer.
She couldn’t.
Because saying the words out loud would make them real.
Grant took one step forward.
“What did they send you?””
Mara looked at him.
And she saw it again.
That fear.
Not fake.
Not an act.
Real fear.
“You know something.””
Grant shook his head.
“No.””
“Then why do you look terrified?””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Mara.””
She handed him the phone.
Her father read the message.
And the color drained from his face.
Ethan noticed.
“Dad?””
Daniel didn’t respond.
“Dad.””
This time, louder.
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
“I don’t understand.””
Mara stared at him.
“That makes two of us.””
Noah looked between them.
“Why would someone say ‘your baby’s father’?””
Nobody spoke.
The silence was an answer.
Mara felt her heartbeat pounding.
“Grant?””
He looked at her.
She hated that she still hoped.
Even after everything.
Some small part of her still wanted him to say something that made sense.
Something that proved the world hadn’t completely fallen apart.
“Tell me.””
Grant looked away.
That was the moment she knew.
Not because he confessed.
Because he couldn’t look at her.
“You knew.””
His voice was quiet.
“I didn’t.””
“You did.””
“Mara—”
“You knew something about my pregnancy.””
Grant ran a hand through his hair.
“This isn’t what you think.””
She almost smiled.
The sentence.
The same sentence.
Always the same sentence.
“This isn’t what you think.””
She stepped closer.
“Then tell me what it is.””
Grant remained silent.
Ethan’s voice turned cold.
“Answer her.””
Grant looked at him.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
Ethan pointed toward Mara.
“You’re right.””
His voice hardened.
“We don’t understand how someone can hurt the person they claim to love.””
Grant’s face changed.
For a second, anger returned.
“I never stopped loving her.””
Mara stared at him.
The words hurt.
Not because she believed them.
Because she realized he might believe them himself.
Some people convinced themselves they loved others while destroying them.
“Mara,” Grant said.
She raised her hand.
“Don’t.””
The room became quiet.
“I don’t want your excuses.””
She looked at him.
“I want the truth.””
Grant looked at the floor.
Then Daniel spoke.
“There was another person.””
Everyone turned.
Mara looked at her father.
“What?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Before I disappeared… I found out Grant wasn’t working alone.””
Grant’s expression changed.
“Don’t.””
Daniel ignored him.
“There was someone else helping him.””
Noah opened the folder quickly.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at Grant.
“I never found out the name.””
Mara stared.
“Then why are you saying this now?””
Daniel looked at the phone.
“Because whoever sent that message knows.””
A cold silence followed.
Mara looked at Grant.
“Who knew about the baby?””
Grant didn’t answer.
Her voice became sharper.
“Who knew?””
Finally, he whispered:
“Vanessa.””
Mara froze.
Her cousin.
Again.
“Vanessa knew?””
Grant nodded slightly.
“How?””
Grant looked away.
“She overheard.””
“When?””
“A few weeks ago.””
Mara’s eyes narrowed.
“A few weeks ago?””
The timing.
Everything connected.
The affair.
The documents.
The anniversary dinner.
The confrontation.
Vanessa had known.
She had known before tonight.
And she had done nothing.
“She knew I was pregnant?””
Grant said nothing.
Mara’s chest tightened.
“You let her know?””
“No.””
“Then how?””
Grant hesitated.
And that hesitation told her everything.
“You told her.””
“No.””
“Grant.””
His shoulders dropped slightly.
“I told her because I needed her help.””
Ethan’s expression turned dangerous.
“Help with what?””
Grant didn’t answer.
Noah stepped forward.
“Help with the divorce?””
Silence.
“Help with the company?””
Silence.
“Help with making sure Mara signed away everything?””
Grant looked up.
“You don’t know the whole story.””
Mara laughed softly.
A painful laugh.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
She looked at the destroyed anniversary table.
“My entire life is apparently a story everyone knows except me.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
Everyone turned.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“It’s the warehouse.””
Ethan looked at him.
“Who is calling?””
Daniel answered.
“Hello?””
The room listened.
Daniel’s face grew more serious with every second.
Then he said:
“Put her on.””
Mara’s stomach tightened.
A woman’s voice came through the speaker.
Weak.
Shaking.
Alive.
“Daniel?””
Mara’s eyes widened.
Vanessa.
Daniel immediately switched to speaker.
“Vanessa, where are you?””
A breath.
A shaky breath.
“I’m sorry.””
Mara closed her eyes.
Even now.
Even after everything.
Vanessa’s first words were an apology.
Daniel’s voice softened.
“Tell us what happened.””
“I made a mistake.””
Grant stepped forward.
“Vanessa.””
The line went silent.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Grant is there?””
Mara watched his face.
“Yes,” Daniel answered.
Another pause.
Then Vanessa said something that made everyone freeze.
“Don’t let him leave.””
Grant’s expression changed.
“What?””
Vanessa continued.
“He knows where the real evidence is.””
Noah grabbed the phone.
“What evidence?””
Vanessa coughed.
“The evidence your father hid.””
Daniel looked confused.
“I never hid anything.””
“Yes, you did.””
Her voice became weaker.
“You just didn’t know.””
Everyone went silent.
Mara felt a chill.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa took a breath.
“Mara…”
Hearing her name made Mara step closer.
“Tell me.””
“I’m sorry.””
“Why?””
A pause.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Because the baby isn’t the only thing Grant has been lying about.””
Mara felt her heart stop.
Grant looked away.
“No.””
Everyone turned toward him.
Mara stared.
“What do you mean, no?””
Grant’s face was pale.
“You don’t understand.””
Vanessa’s voice came through the phone.
“He knew.””
Mara gripped the edge of the table.
“Knew what?””
Vanessa started crying.
“He knew before you did.””
The room became silent.
Mara looked at Grant.
“What?””
Grant didn’t speak.
“Grant.””
Still nothing.
Then Vanessa said:
“He knew you were pregnant.””
Mara felt dizzy.
That wasn’t possible.
She had only discovered it recently.
She had planned to tell him that night.
She had hidden the test.
She had waited for the perfect moment.
“How?””
Vanessa’s voice broke.
“Because he found the medical report.””
Mara stared.
“No.””
Grant finally spoke.
“Mara, listen.””
She turned toward him.
“When?””
His silence answered.
“When did you find out?””
Grant looked down.
And quietly said:
“Three weeks ago.””
The room exploded.
Ethan grabbed Grant’s jacket.
“You knew?””
Grant didn’t fight back.
“You knew my sister was carrying your child…”
Ethan’s voice shook with rage.
“And you still brought another woman into this house?””
Grant pushed him away.
“I was going to tell her.””
Mara looked at him.
“When?””
He stopped.
She nodded slowly.
“Exactly.””
Her voice became quiet.
“You weren’t going to tell me.””
Grant looked at her.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Mara stared.
“Protect me from what?””
Grant didn’t answer.
Vanessa’s voice came through the phone again.
“From the truth.””
Everyone froze.
Mara looked at the phone.
“What truth?””
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
Then she whispered:
“The reason Grant wanted you gone…”
A pause.
“The reason he needed the divorce…”
Another pause.
“The reason he erased your name from everything…”
Mara waited.
And then Vanessa said the words that changed everything.
“Because Grant isn’t the baby’s father.””
The phone slipped from Daniel’s hand.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Mara stared at Grant.
The man who had just destroyed her marriage.
The man who had hidden her father.
The man who had planned to take everything.
And for the first time…
she wondered if she had been betrayed long before she ever met him.
Grant looked at her.
And whispered:
“I can explain.””
But Mara already knew.
May you like
Whatever explanation came next…
would change the truth she thought she knew forever.
