Amused

Chapter 5: The Evidence She Took

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The rain tapped against the windows.

The candles on the anniversary table burned lower.

And in the middle of the room, Grant Whitmore stood completely still.

A man who had spent years building an image of control was now staring at his phone like it had delivered a death sentence.

Mara watched him carefully.

Not with love.

Not anymore.

With curiosity.

Because for the first time, Grant was no longer performing.

He wasn’t the successful businessman.

He wasn’t the charming husband.

He wasn’t the man who could twist every conversation until she apologized.

He was just a man afraid of what someone else knew.

“What evidence?”” Ethan asked.

Grant didn’t answer.

Ethan stepped closer.

“I asked you a question.””

Grant looked up.

“This doesn’t involve you.””

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“You keep saying that.””

He pointed toward Mara.

“But somehow every secret you have somehow destroys her life.””

Daniel stood near the doorway, his face filled with exhaustion.

“He’s right.””

Grant looked at him.

“You should have stayed gone.””

The words were quiet.

But everyone heard them.

Mara felt her stomach turn.

Not because Grant admitted it.

Because he said it like Daniel’s suffering was an inconvenience.

Like eight years of grief had simply been a successful part of his plan.

Her father looked at him.

“You really haven’t changed.””

Grant smiled coldly.

“Neither have you.””

Mara looked between them.

“Stop.””

Both men turned.

She stood straighter.

Her cheek still hurt.

Her heart still hurt.

But something inside her had shifted.

For years, she had waited for people to explain things to her.

Now she wanted answers.

“No more secrets.””

Her voice was steady.

“Not tonight.””

Grant looked away.

Mara stepped closer.

“What evidence did Vanessa take?””

Silence.

Then Daniel answered.

“The original files.””

Mara looked at him.

“Files about what?””

Daniel hesitated.

Grant immediately spoke.

“Nothing that concerns you.””

Mara turned toward him.

“That answer alone tells me it concerns me.””

Grant’s jaw tightened.

Daniel continued.

“Eight years ago, I discovered Grant had been moving company money through fake investment accounts.””

Noah nodded slowly.

“The offshore accounts.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes.””

Mara felt dizzy.

“You knew?””

Daniel’s eyes dropped.

“I suspected.””

“You suspected my husband was stealing from my family’s company, and you disappeared?””

The pain in her voice was worse than anger.

Daniel looked destroyed.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Mara laughed quietly.

It was a sad sound.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

She looked around the room.

“Protect me.””

Her eyes landed on Grant.

“Protect me from the truth.””

Then at Daniel.

“Protect me from danger.””

She shook her head.

“But nobody protected me from being lied to.””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could.

Grant walked toward the table.

“This emotional reunion is distracting everyone from the actual problem.””

Mara looked at him.

“You mean the fact that Vanessa has proof?””

Grant ignored her.

“The documents are dangerous.””

Noah raised an eyebrow.

“For you.””

Grant stared at him.

“For everyone.””

Noah laughed.

“Interesting.””

“What?””

“You didn’t say they were fake.””

A pause.

Grant’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Noah noticed.

Ethan noticed.

Mara noticed.

Grant realized too late.

“You’re trying to trap me.””

“No.””

Noah picked up his folder.

“You’re doing that yourself.””

Grant looked at Daniel.

“You brought them here?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I didn’t.””

“Then who did?””

No one answered.

Because everyone knew.

Mara looked toward the photograph of Vanessa.

The woman who had smiled at her.

The woman who had pretended to care.

“Where is she?””

Grant looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

Mara studied him.

For some reason, she believed him.

And that scared her.

Because Grant was a liar.

But his fear about Vanessa disappearing seemed real.

Noah’s phone buzzed again.

Everyone looked.

Noah read the message.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

Ethan asked.

Noah didn’t answer immediately.

He turned the phone around.

There was a location.

And a message.

*I have the originals. If you want them, come alone.*

Mara looked at Grant.

He was already reaching for his jacket.

“No.””

Ethan blocked the doorway.

“You’re not going anywhere.””

Grant glared.

“Move.””

“No.””

“This is my problem.””

Ethan smiled without humor.

“You lost the right to decide that.””

Grant’s eyes moved toward Mara.

“Mara.””

She hated that hearing her name from him still affected her.

Not emotionally.

Not like before.

But because for years, that voice had meant home.

Now it sounded like a warning.

“What?””

“I need to talk to you.””

“No.””

“Mara.””

“No.””

Her answer was immediate.

Grant looked almost offended.

“You don’t even know what I’m going to say.””

“Yes, I do.””

She looked at him.

“You’re going to explain.””

A pause.

“You’re going to tell me there was a reason.””

Another pause.

“You’re going to tell me I misunderstood.””

Grant said nothing.

Mara nodded.

“That’s what I thought.””

Daniel watched her.

And for the first time that night, she saw something like pride in his expression.

Not because she was strong.

Because she was finally choosing herself.

Noah grabbed his coat.

“I’m going.””

Ethan looked at him.

“No.””

“I know where the location is.””

“That’s exactly why you shouldn’t go.””

Noah looked at Mara.

“She deserves the truth.””

Ethan was silent.

Because he knew.

They all knew.

This wasn’t just about evidence.

It was about Mara taking back the years that had been stolen from her.

Daniel stepped forward.

“I’ll go.””

Everyone looked at him.

Grant laughed.

“You?””

Daniel ignored him.

“I started this.””

Mara looked at her father.

“You didn’t start this.””

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“I trusted the wrong person.””

Mara swallowed.

“So did I.””

The words hurt both of them.

But they were true.

Then Grant’s phone rang again.

This time, he answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

Everyone watched.

Grant listened.

His face became pale.

Then he slowly lowered the phone.

“What happened?””

Ethan asked.

Grant looked at Mara.

“It’s Vanessa.””

Mara froze.

“What about her?””

Grant didn’t answer.

“Grant.””

His voice was barely audible.

“She was found.””

Nobody moved.

The rain outside seemed louder.

Mara felt a cold feeling spread through her body.

“Found where?””

Grant looked down.

“At the old Whitmore warehouse.””

Daniel’s expression changed instantly.

“No.””

Mara turned toward him.

“What?””

Daniel looked terrified.

“The warehouse was where I kept the evidence.””

Noah frowned.

“Before you disappeared?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Ethan looked at Grant.

“You knew about it?””

Grant didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Mara stared.

“You knew.””

Grant looked away.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“I understand perfectly.””

Her voice became quiet.

“You didn’t just lie to me.””

She pointed toward the door.

“You didn’t just cheat on me.””

Her hand moved toward the papers.

“You didn’t just steal from me.””

Then she looked at the phone in his hand.

“You put everyone who knew the truth in danger.””

Grant’s face hardened.

“I never wanted anyone hurt.””

Mara stared at him.

Then glanced at her cheek.

At the table.

At the ruined anniversary dinner.

“No?””

A bitter smile crossed her face.

“Funny.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel suddenly looked at the clock.

His face changed.

“What time was Vanessa found?””

Grant frowned.

“Why?””

“What time?””

Grant checked his phone.

“Twenty minutes ago.””

Daniel went pale.

“Mara.””

Something about his voice made her afraid.

“What?””

Daniel looked at Grant.

Then at the front door.

“She wasn’t found because someone discovered her.””

The room went silent.

“She was found because someone wanted us to know.””

Noah’s expression changed.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel whispered:

“Someone is moving faster than we are.””

A phone buzzed.

Not Grant’s.

Not Noah’s.

Mara’s.

Everyone looked.

She slowly reached into her pocket.

A number she didn’t recognize appeared on the screen.

One message.

One sentence.

Her blood turned cold.

*You finally know the truth about Grant. Now find out what he did to your baby’s father.*

Mara stared at the screen.

Her hands began shaking.

Because she knew something immediately.

The message wasn’t meant to scare her.

It was meant to tell her something impossible.

Something that made no sense.

Something that changed everything.

The sender knew about the pregnancy.

And they knew something about her baby that nobody in that room knew.

Not even Grant.

Not even Mara.

She looked up slowly.

“Who knew I was pregnant?””

Nobody answered.

Then Grant whispered:

“Impossible.””

Mara looked at him.

“Why?””

Because his face had gone completely white.

May you like

And for the first time…

Grant looked afraid of someone else.
