Chapter 9: The Sister Nobody Knew Existed
“Ask Daniel why he never told you about his sister.””
The message sat on the screen.
A single sentence.
But it felt heavier than every secret we had uncovered before.
I looked at Daniel.
His face had gone completely still.
Not confused.
Not surprised.
Afraid.
“You have a sister?””
The question came out quietly.
Daniel didn’t answer.
And that silence was enough.
My chest tightened.
“Daniel.””
He looked away.
“Emma…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“Not again.””
He closed his eyes.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
He didn’t answer.
I laughed softly.
A painful sound.
“When were you planning to tell me?””
“After I figured everything out.””
“That’s what you said about everything else.””
Daniel looked at me.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
I pointed toward the documents covering the table.
“Your father. My mother. My birth.
Noah. Celeste.””
My voice cracked.
“And now there’s a sister?””
Daniel lowered his head.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I stared at him.
The words that once sounded loving now felt like a locked door.
“Who is she?””
Daniel was silent.
“Who is your sister?””
His mother, Eleanor, looked away.
That movement told me everything.
She knew.
“You knew too.””
Eleanor swallowed.
“Yes.””
I turned toward her.
“How many people knew about my life except me?””
Nobody answered.
And somehow, that was the answer.
Daniel finally spoke.
“Her name is Lily.””
The name sounded strange.
Like a person who had existed in my world without me knowing.
“How old is she?””
Daniel looked down.
“Twenty-six.””
I froze.
“Twenty-six?””
“Yes.””
“You have a sister who is twenty-six years old, and you never mentioned her?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“She wasn’t supposed to be part of my life.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel walked toward the window.
“My father didn’t want anyone to know about her.””
“Why?””
“Because Lily was proof.””
“Proof of what?””
He turned back.
“Proof that Richard had another family.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Eleanor.
Her face was pale.
“You knew?””
She nodded slowly.
“Richard had another relationship.””
“With who?””
“A woman named Clara.””
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“She worked at my father’s company.””
“And Lily?””
“My father never acknowledged her publicly.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Because my father cared about his reputation more than people.””
The anger in his voice surprised me.
This wasn’t fear.
This was pain.
“You met her?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“When I was seventeen.””
I frowned.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because Lily disappeared.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“She found out who my father really was.””
“And?””
“She tried to expose him.””
I felt cold.
“What happened?””
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“She was sent away.””
“By who?””
He didn’t answer.
But Eleanor did.
“Richard.””
The next morning, we found Lily.
Or rather, she found us.
A message arrived at 6:13 a.m.
No name.
No number.
Just an address.
And one sentence.
*If you want the truth, come alone.*
Daniel wanted to go with me.
I refused.
“You’re not coming.””
His face tightened.
“Emma.””
“No.””
“After everything, you think I’m going to let you walk into this alone?””
I looked at him.
“That’s exactly what you did to me.””
The words hurt.
I saw them hurt.
But he nodded.
“You’re right.””
That answer stopped me.
Again.
Because the old Daniel would have fought.
The old Daniel would have explained.
This Daniel just accepted that he had lost the right.
“I’ll stay close,” he said.
I hesitated.
Then nodded.
“Close.””
The address led me to a small apartment above an old bookstore.
Nothing about it looked dangerous.
That almost made it worse.
Danger was easier when it announced itself.
I climbed the stairs.
And knocked.
The door opened almost immediately.
A woman stood there.
She looked about my age.
Dark hair.
Tired eyes.
And a face that somehow seemed familiar.
Not because I had seen her before.
Because she carried pieces of Daniel.
The same eyes.
The same expression when she was afraid.
“You’re Emma.””
I nodded.
“You’re Lily.””
She smiled sadly.
“Yes.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she stepped aside.
“Come in.””
The apartment was small.
Books covered every wall.
Old documents covered the table.
“You knew I was coming?””
“I hoped you would.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because you deserve the truth.””
I almost laughed.
Everyone said that now.
Truth.
As if the word could repair everything.
“Start.””
Lily nodded.
“Richard Whitmore was obsessed with control.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
The same words.
But from her, they sounded different.
“You know the crimes.””
She sat down.
“You know the money.””
She looked at me.
“But you don’t know the reason.””
“What reason?””
She took out an old photograph.
A photograph of a baby.
My hands went cold.
“Who is that?””
She looked at the picture.
“That’s me.””
I frowned.
“Why are you showing me this?””
“Because Richard wasn’t trying to protect his company.””
She slid the photo toward me.
“He was trying to protect his bloodline.””
I looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
Lily took a breath.
“Your biological father and Richard knew each other before the accident.””
“I know.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“They weren’t enemies at first.””
I froze.
“What?””
“They were partners.””
The room became silent.
“Partners?””
“Yes.””
“In what?””
Lily looked down.
“Creating something.””
“What?””
“A legal trust.””
I frowned.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does when you understand what was inside it.””
She opened a folder.
Inside were documents.
The same kind of documents that had followed me for days.
“The trust wasn’t about money.””
“Then what?””
Lily looked at me.
“It was about protecting children.””
My breath caught.
“Children?””
“Yes.””
She pointed at the documents.
“Your father discovered Richard was using the company to hide money and manipulate people.””
“Then why create a trust together?””
“Because Richard wanted to fix it.””
I stared.
“You’re saying Richard changed?””
“No.””
Lily’s voice became cold.
“I’m saying he was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She looked at me.
“Of your father exposing him.””
The room went quiet.
“Then why did my father trust him?””
“He didn’t.””
Lily reached into the folder.
She pulled out another paper.
“He created a backup plan.””
I read the first line.
*Emergency beneficiaries: Emma Carter and Lily Whitmore.*
My heart stopped.
I looked up.
“You.””
Lily nodded.
“We were the proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That Richard’s crimes were connected to both families.””
I stared at her.
“Then Noah…”
Lily’s expression changed.
“He is part of it.””
My stomach dropped.
“What does that mean?””
“Your son’s DNA could reveal the truth.””
“How?””
She looked toward the window.
“Because Richard was searching for something.””
“What?””
“The missing evidence.””
“Where is it?””
Lily looked at me.
“You already have it.””
I froze.
“What?””
She pointed at me.
“Noah.””
I stepped back.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does.””
“No.””
“Emma, your father hid information inside your family line because he knew Richard would search for documents.””
I shook my head.
“You’re saying my son is evidence?””
“No.””
Her voice softened.
“I’m saying your son’s existence proves Richard failed.””
I didn’t understand.
Then Lily said:
“Your father didn’t leave behind a document.””
She paused.
“He left behind a person.””
The room went silent.
I thought of Noah.
The baby everyone wanted to understand.
The baby everyone was afraid of.
The baby born into a war he never chose.
My phone suddenly rang.
Daniel.
I answered immediately.
“Where are you?””
His voice was urgent.
“Emma, listen to me.””
“What happened?””
“Eleanor found something.””
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“Victor wasn’t working for my father.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
“He was working against him.””
I looked at Lily.
She had gone pale.
“How do you know?””
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“Because Victor left a message.””
“What message?””
Daniel took a breath.
“He said the person behind everything was never Richard.””
My heart started racing.
“Then who?””
Silence.
Then Daniel whispered:
“Your mother.””
I looked at Lily.
She looked just as shocked.
“No.””
Daniel continued.
“Emma, there’s something you need to know.””
“What?””
His voice broke.
“The woman who raised you wasn’t protecting you from Richard.””
I held my breath.
“She was protecting you from the truth about herself.””
The call ended.
I stood frozen.
Then Lily slowly said:
“Emma…”
I looked at her.
“What?””
Her face was filled with fear.
“I think we need to find your mother.””
“Why?””
She looked at the door.
“Because if Daniel is right…”
May you like
She swallowed.
“Your mother may be the reason Noah was born.””
