Chapter 8: The Enemy Inside the Family
The photo stayed on my phone screen.
Noah sleeping peacefully.
His tiny face turned toward the blanket.
His little hand curled beside his cheek.
A picture that should have been impossible.
Because nobody outside Rachel’s house should have been able to take it.
I looked at the timestamp.
Ten minutes earlier.
My stomach dropped.
“Rachel.””
She immediately understood from my voice.
“What?””
I turned the phone toward her.
Her face lost all color.
“Emma…”
“I locked the doors.””
“I know.””
“The windows are closed.””
“I know.””
“Then how?””
Nobody answered.
Because we all knew the terrifying truth.
Someone had been close enough to take that picture.
Close enough to watch my son sleep.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Where is Noah?””
Rachel didn’t wait.
She ran toward the nursery.
I followed.
My heart was pounding so hard it hurt.
When we reached the room, Noah was still there.
Still sleeping.
Still safe.
I picked him up immediately.
His warmth against my chest was the only thing that felt real.
Daniel stood at the doorway, watching.
For a moment, I saw something different in his eyes.
Not fear for himself.
Fear for his son.
“Emma,” he whispered.
I held Noah tighter.
“What?””
“We need to leave.””
I looked at him.
“You’re right.””
His eyebrows lifted.
“You agree?””
“Yes.””
I looked around the room.
The nursery.
The blankets.
The toys.
The life I had imagined.
“We need to leave because someone found us.””
Daniel nodded.
“I’ll get the car.””
“No.””
He stopped.
“What?””
“You’re not taking us anywhere alone.””
His expression changed.
“Emma, I’m trying to help.””
“I know.””
And that was the hardest part.
I knew he was trying.
But trying didn’t erase what happened.
“I don’t know if I can trust you.””
Daniel looked down.
“I understand.””
That answer surprised me.
Because old Daniel would have argued.
He would have defended himself.
He would have tried to convince me.
This Daniel just accepted the punishment.
And somehow, that hurt more.
We moved to a nearby hotel under Rachel’s name.
Not because it was perfect.
Because we needed somewhere temporary.
Somewhere unknown.
Somewhere without memories.
The room smelled like artificial flowers and cleaning products.
It was not a home.
But right now, home felt dangerous.
Noah slept in the portable crib beside the bed.
I sat on the floor watching him.
Daniel sat across from me.
Neither of us spoke for a long time.
Finally, he said:
“I’m sorry.””
I didn’t look up.
“You’ve said that before.””
“I know.””
“And it didn’t change anything.””
“I know.””
I looked at him.
“You really changed your answer.””
He gave a small, sad smile.
“I finally understand that apologies aren’t supposed to make me feel better.””
The honesty caught me off guard.
Daniel looked at Noah.
“They’re supposed to acknowledge what I did to someone else.””
I stayed quiet.
“I left you when you needed me most.””
“Yes.””
“I lied about Celeste.””
“Yes.””
“I kept my family’s secrets from you.””
“Yes.””
His voice became quieter.
“And I made you feel like you were alone.””
I swallowed.
Because that was the part that hurt the most.
Not the vacation.
Not even Celeste.
The loneliness.
The feeling that when everything went wrong, I was the only person fighting.
“I was sitting on that floor holding our son,” I whispered.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
A tear fell before I could stop it.
“I thought something was wrong with him. I thought I was going to lose him.””
Daniel looked devastated.
“And you weren’t there.””
“No.””
He nodded slowly.
“I wasn’t.””
The room went quiet.
Then his phone rang.
Both of us froze.
Nobody called us anymore.
Not after everything.
Daniel checked the screen.
His face changed.
“It’s my mother.””
“Answer.””
He did.
“Mom?””
Eleanor’s voice came through immediately.
“Daniel, where are you?””
“Somewhere safe.””
“Good.””
Her voice was shaking.
“Listen carefully. I found something.””
Daniel sat up.
“What?””
“Your father’s old files.””
“How?””
“I went back to the house.””
My heart tightened.
“What house?””
Eleanor hesitated.
“Richard’s private office.””
Daniel looked at me.
“You said that room was locked.””
“It was.””
“Then how did you get in?””
A pause.
Then she said:
“Because I had the key.””
Daniel stood.
“You had a key to my father’s office?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her voice became quiet.
“Because I helped him hide things.””
The confession landed hard.
Daniel looked furious.
“What things?””
“I don’t have time to explain everything.””
“You have plenty of time.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“You don’t understand.””
“What?””
“Someone else is looking for those files.””
I stepped closer.
“Who?””
Eleanor went silent.
Then:
“Victor.””
Daniel’s face changed.
The name.
Again.
The same name connected to every secret.
“Victor Hale?””
“Yes.””
Daniel clenched his jaw.
“Why would he want the files?””
“Because he knows what Richard did.””
“And?””
“He knows what I did.””
The line went quiet.
I whispered:
“What did you do?””
Eleanor answered:
“I helped Richard hide the truth about Emma’s father.””
My heart stopped.
Daniel looked at me.
“Mom.””
“I was young.””
“No.””
His voice became cold.
“You were an adult.””
Silence.
Then Eleanor said:
“I know.””
An hour later, Eleanor arrived at the hotel.
She looked exhausted.
Older.
Like carrying secrets for decades had finally caught up with her.
She placed a thick folder on the table.
“This is everything.””
Daniel didn’t touch it.
“What is it?””
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
She looked at me.
“Proof that Richard was planning something much bigger than anyone knew.””
I opened the folder.
Inside were contracts.
Bank records.
Letters.
Photos.
And one document that immediately caught my attention.
A hospital form.
My hands shook.
“What is this?””
Eleanor sat down.
“The original birth record.””
I looked at it.
Noah’s name.
My name.
Daniel’s name.
Everything looked normal.
Until I saw the bottom.
A handwritten note.
*Subject: Genetic confirmation required.*
I frowned.
“What does this mean?””
Eleanor looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
“Richard ordered a DNA test before Noah was born.””
I froze.
“Why?””
She whispered:
“Because he suspected Noah was connected to the secret.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Connected how?””
Eleanor’s eyes filled with fear.
“Because Richard believed Noah carried proof.””
“Proof of what?””
She looked at the door.
Then lowered her voice.
“Proof that the person everyone thought died twenty-seven years ago…”
She stopped.
My heart raced.
“Who?””
Eleanor looked at me.
“Your biological father.””
The room went silent.
“He wasn’t killed because of the documents.””
I stared.
“Then why?””
“Because Richard thought he had hidden something inside his bloodline.””
I looked at Noah.
The baby who had become the center of a mystery older than him.
“What are you saying?””
Eleanor whispered:
“Your father left evidence inside your family.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It will.””
She pulled out one final document.
A letter.
“This was found in Richard’s safe.””
Daniel grabbed it.
He read the first line.
Then his expression changed.
“What?””
I took it from him.
The handwriting was familiar.
The signature was clear.
My biological father.
The letter was addressed to Richard.
*You can take the money. You can take the company. But you will never take my child’s future.*
I read the next sentence.
And my entire body went cold.
*Because Emma is not the only child I protected.*
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.
Another unknown number.
Another message.
This time, there was no photo.
Only words.
*You’re looking in the wrong direction.*
A second message appeared.
*The child you’re protecting isn’t the one you should fear losing.*
Daniel stared at the screen.
“What is it?””
I looked at him.
“Who sent it?””
His face went pale.
Because this time, he recognized the number.
“It’s Victor.””
The room froze.
“Victor is alive?”” I asked.
Daniel shook his head slowly.
“No.””
“Then how—”
He looked at the message again.
And whispered:
“Because Victor isn’t the person sending these.””
A new message appeared.
May you like
One final line.
*Ask Daniel why he never told you about his sister.*
