Amused

Chapter 6: The Woman Behind the Warning

“The person who tried to kill him before he was born.””

Celeste’s words followed me long after we left the coffee shop.

I heard them in the car.

I heard them while walking through Rachel’s front door.

I heard them while standing beside Noah’s crib at midnight, watching his tiny chest rise and fall.

Someone tried to kill my baby.

Not hurt him.

Not scare me.

Not ruin my marriage.

Kill him.

The thought was too big for my mind to hold.

I reached through the crib rails and touched Noah’s tiny hand.

His fingers curled around mine immediately.

A reflex.

A simple movement.

But it reminded me of something important.

No matter how many secrets surrounded him, Noah was real.

His heartbeat was real.

His love was real.

And I would do anything to protect him.

Anything.

“Emma?””

I turned.

Rachel stood in the doorway holding two mugs of tea.

“You haven’t moved in ten minutes.””

I forced myself to look away from the crib.

“Sorry.””

She walked closer.

“You don’t have to apologize.””

I accepted the mug but didn’t drink.

Rachel studied my face.

“What happened?””

I wanted to lie.

I wanted to say everything was fine.

That was what I had always done.

But I was tired of pretending.

“Someone tried to hurt Noah.””

The mug nearly slipped from her hand.

“What?””

I looked at her.

“Celeste says someone tried to stop him from being born.””

Rachel’s expression changed.

“Emma…”

“I don’t know what’s true anymore.””

She sat beside me.

“Then start with what you know.””

I looked down at Noah.

“I know Daniel left.””

Rachel nodded.

“I know.””

“I know he lied to me.””

“I know.””

“I know my mother hid something about my birth.””

Rachel became quiet.

“And I know someone changed Noah’s medical records.””

The room went silent.

Then Rachel asked softly:

“What if Celeste is lying?””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“What if she’s using this to get Daniel back?””

That possibility had crossed my mind.

Of course it had.

Celeste was the woman connected to the worst week of my life.

The woman who had been beside my husband while I was alone.

But there was something I couldn’t ignore.

She had information.

Information nobody else had.

“I don’t know,” I whispered.

Rachel reached over and squeezed my hand.

“Then don’t trust anyone completely.””

I looked at her.

“Not even Daniel?””

“Especially not Daniel.””

The next morning, Daniel arrived carrying a small bag.

I opened the door before he knocked twice.

“What is that?””

He looked down.

“Things for Noah.””

“I didn’t ask you to bring anything.””

“I know.””

His voice was quiet.

“That’s why I brought them.””

I almost closed the door.

But something stopped me.

Maybe because he looked different.

Not innocent.

Not forgiven.

Just tired.

“What do you want?””

Daniel held up the bag.

“Can I see him?””

I hesitated.

Then stepped aside.

“Ten minutes.””

He nodded.

“Thank you.””

That was the first time Daniel had ever thanked me for access to his own child.

And somehow, that hurt.

He walked toward the nursery slowly.

Like he was entering a place he no longer had the right to enter.

When he saw Noah, his face changed.

The walls he had built around himself disappeared.

“Hey, buddy.””

His voice cracked.

He reached into the crib and gently touched Noah’s fingers.

Noah wrapped his tiny hand around Daniel’s finger.

Daniel froze.

I watched his eyes fill.

For a second, I saw the man I fell in love with.

The man who cried during our first ultrasound.

The man who painted this nursery at two in the morning because he wanted everything perfect.

Then I remembered the beach.

The pictures.

The silence.

And I looked away.

“I’m sorry,” Daniel whispered.

I didn’t know if he meant to Noah.

Or to me.

Maybe both.

After a moment, he turned.

“Emma.””

I stayed near the doorway.

“What?””

“I need to tell you something.””

My body immediately became tense.

“What now?””

He looked down.

“Before I went to the Caribbean…”

I waited.

“I wasn’t just meeting Celeste.””

The room felt colder.

“What?””

Daniel swallowed.

“There was someone else.””

I stared at him.

“Someone else?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“My father’s old attorney.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because Celeste found records showing my father left something behind.””

“What kind of records?””

Daniel looked toward Noah.

“A trust.””

I didn’t understand.

“What does that have to do with Noah?””

Daniel’s face became serious.

“Everything.””

Later that afternoon, Daniel showed me the documents.

We sat at Rachel’s dining table.

The same table where we had celebrated birthdays.

Now covered with papers explaining why our lives were falling apart.

“This trust was created twenty-seven years ago,” Daniel said.

I looked at the pages.

“By your grandfather?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Daniel pointed.

“The beneficiary.””

I read the name.

Then stopped.

My hands went cold.

*Emma Rose Carter.*

My name.

I looked up.

“What?””

Daniel nodded.

“My grandfather created a trust for you before you were born.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

“No.””

I pushed the papers away.

“That’s not possible.””

Daniel’s voice softened.

“Emma.””

“My family struggled. We didn’t have money.””

“I know.””

“My mother worked three jobs.””

“I know.””

“Then why was there a trust?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t have one.

I picked up the paper again.

There was another name.

The person who managed the trust.

A signature.

A name.

My mother.

Margaret Carter.

I felt sick.

“My mother knew.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“She knew about this money?””

“Yes.””

“And she never told me?””

“No.””

I stood.

The room spun.

“How many things did she hide from me?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

That evening, my mother called.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

“Emma?””

“What was the trust?””

Silence.

A long, painful silence.

Then:

“Daniel showed you.””

Not a question.

A statement.

My hands tightened.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“You knew there was money in my name?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

My mother cried quietly.

“Because it wasn’t really money.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

“It was protection.””

“Protection from what?””

Another pause.

Then she said:

“From Daniel’s family.””

I closed my eyes.

“Mom.””

“Your grandfather knew something bad was going to happen.””

“My grandfather?””

“No.””

She corrected herself.

“Daniel’s grandfather.””

I felt a chill.

“He created the trust because he knew someone in his family was dangerous.””

“Who?””

My mother’s voice dropped.

“His son.””

Daniel’s father.

I stood frozen.

“What did he do?””

My mother whispered:

“He tried to erase you.””

I couldn’t speak.

“He believed you were proof of something he had done.””

“What?””

My mother took a shaky breath.

“Twenty-seven years ago, Daniel’s father caused the accident that killed someone.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“Your biological father.””

The room went silent.

I gripped the phone.

“Why would he kill him?””

My mother’s voice broke.

“Because your father discovered the truth about Daniel’s family.””

“What truth?””

And then my mother said something that changed everything.

“Daniel’s father wasn’t protecting a secret.””

I waited.

“He was protecting a crime.””

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A new message appeared.

Unknown number.

I looked down.

One sentence.

*Ask Daniel why his father kept your birth certificate locked away for twenty-seven years.*

I looked at Daniel standing across the room.

He saw my face.

“What happened?””

I slowly turned the phone toward him.

The moment he read the message, all the color left his face.

Because unlike me…

He recognized the number.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

His voice was barely a whisper.

“It’s my father’s number.””

I froze.

“Your father is dead.””

Daniel stared at the screen.

“I know.””

Another message appeared.

May you like

This time, only three words.

*I’m still here.*
