Amused

Chapter 9: The Last Secret Victoria Carried

The necklace sat in my father’s hand like a piece of a nightmare.

A silver family crest.

The same symbol that had followed us through every secret.

Every lie.

Every missing year.

But this one was different.

Because none of us recognized it.

My father turned it over slowly.

His fingers traced the engraving on the back.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“What is it?””

He didn’t answer.

Lily looked at him.

“Dad?””

My father looked up.

His eyes were filled with something I had never seen before.

Fear.

“I’ve seen this before.””

My heart sank.

“Where?””

He stared at the necklace.

“In your mother’s belongings.””

The room went silent.

“My mother had another one?””

He nodded.

“She kept it hidden.””

“When?””

“After Lily was born.””

Lily frowned.

“Why?””

My father looked toward the window.

“I don’t know.””

A terrible thought entered my mind.

“Maybe she wasn’t the only person she was hiding.””

Nobody spoke.

Because we all knew.

The truth had never stopped at one secret.

It had only opened doors to more.

My father grabbed his keys.

“We need to find Victoria.””

The airport was almost empty when we arrived.

The bright lights reflected off the polished floors.

People walked past us carrying suitcases, completely unaware that our entire family was falling apart and rebuilding itself at the same time.

My father moved quickly.

He had always been someone who belonged in places like this.

Confident.

Certain.

But tonight, he looked different.

Like a man chasing the last pieces of a life he lost.

“Daniel said she would be here,” Lily said.

My father nodded.

“She has a private terminal.””

I looked at him.

“You know where?””

“Yes.””

Of course he did.

That was the strange thing about my father.

He knew how to run a company.

He knew how to negotiate billion-dollar deals.

But he didn’t know his daughters were alive.

A woman at the security desk looked up when we approached.

“Mr. Hayes?””

My father nodded.

“We’re looking for Victoria Vale.””

The woman hesitated.

“She already checked in.””

My father’s face tightened.

“When?””

“Twenty minutes ago.””

“Did she leave?””

The woman glanced at the computer.

“No.””

My father exhaled.

“Where is she?””

The woman looked uncomfortable.

“She requested a private room.””

“Take us there.””

“I can’t do that.””

My father pulled out his phone.

“I own this airport.””

The woman immediately looked nervous.

But before she could answer, a voice came from behind us.

“You always did think money could open every door.””

We turned.

Victoria stood near the entrance.

No wedding dress.

No perfect smile.

Just a black coat and a small suitcase.

She looked tired.

But not defeated.

Never defeated.

My father stepped forward.

“Where is the letter?””

Victoria smiled faintly.

“Hello to you too.””

“Where is it?””

She looked at Lily.

Then at me.

Then at Mia in my arms.

“You found all three.””

My body froze.

All three.

My father heard it too.

“What did you say?””

Victoria’s smile disappeared.

“Nothing.””

“No.””

His voice became dangerous.

“You said three.””

She looked away.

“Adrian.””

“Who is the third?””

Silence.

That was her mistake.

Because silence was an answer.

My father stepped closer.

“Who?””

Victoria looked at me.

And for a second, I saw something strange.

Not anger.

Regret.

“I never wanted this.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You never wanted us to know.””

She looked at me.

“You think you understand everything.””

“No.””

I stepped forward.

“I understand enough.””

Victoria’s eyes moved to Lily.

“She was never supposed to find you.””

Lily’s face tightened.

“You stole my life.””

Victoria looked at her.

“No.””

Her voice softened.

“I saved it.””

Everyone stared.

“How can you say that?””

Lily’s voice broke.

“How can you stand there after everything?””

Victoria looked away.

“Because you don’t know what happened.””

My father shook his head.

“I’m done listening to excuses.””

Victoria reached into her bag.

She pulled out an envelope.

My father stopped.

The letter.

My mother’s final letter.

“I kept this because I knew you would come.””

He stared.

“Give it to me.””

Victoria held it tighter.

“First, you need to understand.””

“No.””

His voice was cold.

“First, you need to give me the letter.””

For the first time, Victoria looked scared.

Not because of him.

Because of what was inside.

She slowly handed it over.

My father took it.

He opened it immediately.

The paper was old.

The handwriting was familiar.

My mother.

The woman who had carried all these secrets alone.

My father read the first lines.

Then he stopped.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He looked at Lily.

Then at me.

Then back at the letter.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

He handed it to me.

My hands shook as I read.

Adrian,

If you found this, then Clara and Lily know the truth.

I looked at my father.

My mother knew.

She knew one day we might discover everything.

I need you to understand something. I made mistakes.

My heart tightened.

I was afraid. I was hurt. I believed things that were not true.

I continued.

But there is one thing I never did.

The next sentence made me stop.

I never abandoned any of my children.

Tears blurred my vision.

I kept reading.

The third child was not planned.

My breath caught.

Third child.

There it was.

The truth.

When I discovered I was pregnant again, I was terrified.

My father looked at me.

Lily covered her mouth.

I had already lost Lily. I believed I was losing Adrian. I didn’t know who I could trust.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

Then Victoria offered help.

Everyone went silent.

She told me she understood. She told me she could protect my children.

I looked at Victoria.

She looked down.

I was wrong.

The room felt colder.

The third child was taken before I could tell Adrian.

My father whispered:

“No…”

I kept reading.

Victoria said the baby was not safe. She said she had arranged everything.

A tear fell onto the letter.

But I later discovered the truth.

I looked at the final lines.

Adrian, if you are reading this, please find our child.

The words blurred.

Your daughter is alive.

My father closed his eyes.

A daughter.

Again.

Another daughter.

Another missing piece.

Then the final sentence.

The one that destroyed all of us.

Victoria did not hide one child from us.

I swallowed.

She hid three.

The letter fell from my hands.

Nobody spoke.

Because the impossible had become real.

Victoria looked at us.

And this time, she didn’t look powerful.

She looked like someone who knew the truth had finally escaped.

My father turned toward her.

“Where is my daughter?””

Victoria’s lips trembled.

“I don’t know.””

He stepped forward.

“Don’t lie.””

“I’m not.””

“Then who has her?””

Victoria looked at the floor.

And whispered:

“The same person who has been protecting the secret all these years.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

Victoria looked at my father.

And said a name.

A name none of us expected.

A name that made Daniel’s earlier warnings suddenly make sense.

“Your brother.””

My father froze.

“My brother died.””

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

The airport noise disappeared.

The world stopped.

“Adrian…”

She whispered:

“Your brother is alive.””

My father stared at her.

May you like

And then she said the words that opened the final door.

“He took your daughter.””
