Amused

Chapter 6: The Memory That Was Never Mine

The call ended.

No goodbye.

No explanation.

Just silence.

My father stood frozen with the phone still pressed against his ear.

Victoria’s final words echoed through the apartment.

Ask your daughters what their mother really did the night Lily disappeared.

I looked at Lily.

Lily looked at me.

Neither of us knew what to say.

Because for the first time, the person we had trusted most was the person we were being asked to question.

Our mother.

The woman who had raised me.

The woman who had written letters.

The woman who had begged my father to find us.

Could she have hidden something?

Could she have lied?

My father lowered the phone.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

But certain.

“No.””

Lily looked at him.

“Dad…”

“No.””

He shook his head.

“Your mother would never hurt either of you.””

Victoria’s words had planted a seed.

But my father refused to let it grow.

I wanted to believe him.

I needed to.

But there was one thing I couldn’t ignore.

My mother’s letter.

Someone took Lily from us.

Not lost.

Not disappeared.

Taken.

Someone had stolen my sister.

And now Victoria was saying my mother was involved.

“There’s something else,” Lily whispered.

Everyone turned toward her.

My father stepped closer.

“What?””

Lily looked nervous.

“Something Victoria told me.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did she say?””

Lily looked down.

“She said Mom knew where I was.””

The room went silent.

My father’s face changed.

“No.””

“She said my mother abandoned me because she couldn’t handle having two children.””

“No.””

“She said you left because you found out.””

My father shook his head.

“She lied.””

Lily looked at him.

“How do you know?””

The question was gentle.

But it destroyed him.

Because he didn’t know.

Not completely.

He knew Victoria had lied.

He knew she had hidden things.

But he didn’t know every detail.

And that uncertainty hurt.

“I don’t know everything,” he admitted.

Lily’s eyes filled.

“That’s what scares me.””

I understood.

Because I felt the same.

For years, I had lived with a story.

A simple story.

Dad left.

Mom stayed.

Then Mom died.

But now every piece of that story was changing.

My father sat down.

“We need the truth.””

Nobody argued.

Because that was the only thing left.

The truth.

We spent the next hour going through everything Lily remembered.

Not guesses.

Not rumors.

Memories.

Small pieces of a missing life.

Lily sat at the kitchen table with a cup of tea between her hands.

She looked uncomfortable.

Like she wasn’t used to people listening.

“When I was little,” she began, “I remember a woman coming to see me.””

My father leaned forward.

“Who?””

“I don’t know her name.””

“What did she look like?””

Lily closed her eyes.

“She had dark hair.””

My father looked at me.

I knew what he was thinking.

Victoria.

“She always wore expensive clothes.””

Daniel quietly said, “That sounds like Victoria.””

Lily nodded.

“I think it was her.””

My father’s hands tightened.

“What did she tell you?””

Lily looked at the table.

“That my parents didn’t want me.””

The words were painful even though they weren’t mine.

My father closed his eyes.

“No.””

“She told me my mother chose Clara.””

My heart stopped.

“She told you that?””

Lily nodded.

“She said my parents had a new baby and forgot about me.””

I looked at Mia.

My little sister.

The baby who had unknowingly brought all of us together.

My father looked devastated.

“She made you believe that?””

“Yes.””

Lily wiped her face.

“And for years, I hated people I never even met.””

My father reached across the table.

“I’m sorry.””

Lily looked at him.

“For what?””

“For not finding you.””

The silence that followed was heavy.

Then Lily asked the question nobody wanted to hear.

“Why didn’t you?””

My father looked at the floor.

Because there was no easy answer.

“I thought you were gone.””

“But why?””

He looked up.

“Because someone showed me papers.””

Lily froze.

“What papers?””

“Hospital records.””

My father looked at Daniel.

“The same ones you found?””

Daniel nodded.

My father continued.

“They said Lily had passed away.””

Lily whispered:

“But I didn’t.””

“No.””

My father’s voice broke.

“You didn’t.””

I looked at the folder.

The fake birth records.

The hidden documents.

The lies stacked on top of each other.

Victoria hadn’t just hidden one thing.

She had built an entire false reality.

Then my phone buzzed.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

A text.

My blood ran cold.

*Stop digging.*

I showed my father.

His expression darkened.

“Give me your phone.””

I handed it over.

Another message appeared.

*You have no idea what your mother was capable of.*

My father typed immediately.

Who is this?

The response came seconds later.

*Someone who knew her better than you did.*

My fingers tightened.

Then another message.

*Meet me if you want answers. Alone.*

My father stared at the screen.

“It’s a trap.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

But something bothered me.

The person wasn’t threatening us.

They were offering information.

Someone wanted us to know something.

“Who could know this?”” Lily asked.

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel spoke.

“There is someone.””

My father looked at him.

“Who?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Your former lawyer.””

My father frowned.

“Marcus?””

Daniel nodded.

“He handled the custody arrangements after your divorce.””

I felt confused.

“Why would he know?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Because he was involved when Lily disappeared.””

The room went silent again.

My father stood.

“Where is he?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

“Find out.””

Daniel nodded.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What?””

My father immediately noticed.

“What happened?””

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

“It’s Marcus.””

My father stepped forward.

“What about him?””

Daniel swallowed.

“He wants to meet.””

“When?””

“Tonight.””

“Where?””

Daniel looked at all of us.

“At the old hospital.””

My father went still.

The hospital.

The place where Lily was supposedly born.

The place where she supposedly died.

The place where everything began.

An hour later, we arrived.

The building looked abandoned.

Half the lights were broken.

The parking lot was empty.

Rain fell against the windshield.

My father turned off the engine.

“I’m going in.””

I grabbed his arm.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Clara.””

“You said we do this together.””

He stared.

Then nodded.

“You’re right.””

Lily sat beside me.

She looked terrified.

But she got out too.

The three of us walked toward the entrance.

The doors opened with a loud creak.

Inside, the hospital smelled like dust and old memories.

A man stood at the end of the hallway.

Older.

Gray hair.

A nervous expression.

“Adrian.””

My father stopped.

“Marcus.””

The lawyer looked at me.

Then at Lily.

Then closed his eyes.

“I was afraid this day would come.””

My father stepped forward.

“What did you do?””

Marcus looked broken.

“I didn’t take her.””

The words made everyone freeze.

My father’s voice became dangerous.

“Then who did?””

Marcus looked toward Lily.

And whispered:

“Your wife.””

My father went completely still.

“What?””

Marcus shook his head.

“Not Victoria.””

He looked at us.

“Your first wife.””

My heart stopped.

“My mother?””

Marcus nodded.

And then he said the sentence that changed the entire truth we thought we knew.

“She was the one who asked me to hide Lily’s identity.””

Nobody moved.

Because suddenly…

May you like

The enemy we had been chasing was no longer standing outside the story.

She was part of it.
