Amused

Chapter 4: The Name Hidden In The Papers

My father didn’t open the folder.

Not immediately.

He just stared at it.

Like the papers inside weren’t made of ordinary ink and paper, but something dangerous.

Something alive.

The man standing in the doorway, Daniel, looked older than my father. His suit was wrinkled, his eyes were tired, and his hands kept trembling slightly.

“Where did you get this?”” my father asked.

Daniel looked at Victoria’s empty chair.

Then at me.

Then at Mia.

“I found it in the office.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“Whose office?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Victoria’s.””

The room went silent again.

It felt like every few minutes, another piece of my father’s life collapsed.

A wedding.

A marriage.

A future.

And now, a secret buried inside the woman he almost married.

“Why were you in her office?”” my father asked.

Daniel hesitated.

“I was looking for the guest list.””

My father stared at him.

“And you found a birth certificate?””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I found a locked drawer.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What was inside?””

Daniel looked at the folder.

“Documents.””

“What documents?”” my father demanded.

Daniel took a breath.

“Documents about your first marriage.””

My father froze.

“My first marriage?””

“Yes.””

The words felt strange.

Because I had spent my entire life hearing about my parents’ divorce as if it were a simple ending.

Two people who fell apart.

Two people who moved on.

But now I was realizing there had been things nobody told me.

Things hidden between the cracks.

My father opened the folder.

Slowly.

The first page was a birth certificate.

I could see the shape of the words before he even read them.

His hands tightened.

“Adrian?””

He didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

He looked at me.

And the pain in his eyes scared me.

“Her name.””

His voice cracked.

“Her name is Lily.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But it meant everything to him.

“You know that name?”” I asked.

My father sat down.

Slowly.

Like his legs couldn’t hold him anymore.

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“How?””

He stared at the paper.

“Because your mother wanted to name you Lily.””

My breath caught.

“What?””

He looked up.

“Before you were born, we had a baby girl.””

The room spun.

“No.””

The word left my mouth before I could stop it.

My father closed his eyes.

“I thought she died.””

Mia began to fuss in my arms.

I held her tighter.

My entire body felt numb.

A sister.

Another daughter.

Another child my mother carried.

Another person who had disappeared.

“What happened?”” I whispered.

My father looked at the certificate again.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel spoke quietly.

“That’s why I brought it to you.””

My father looked at him.

“What else did you find?””

Daniel reached into his jacket.

He pulled out another envelope.

“This.””

My father recognized the handwriting immediately.

My mother’s handwriting.

Again.

“No,” he whispered.

I watched him open it.

The first letter had nearly destroyed him.

I didn’t know if he could survive another.

He read silently.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

A tear fell.

“What does it say?””

He handed it to me.

I hesitated.

Then I took it.

The paper was old.

The ink was faded.

But my mother’s words were clear.

Adrian,

If you are reading this, then I failed to protect the truth long enough.

My heart tightened.

Lily was born before Clara. She was our first miracle.

I looked at my father.

He looked away.

But someone took her from us.

My hands began shaking.

I continued reading.

They told us she was sick. They told us she didn’t survive. They showed us papers. They showed us a hospital record.

I stopped.

Because I already knew where this was going.

Victoria.

But I discovered years later that those papers were false.

My father stood suddenly.

“Victoria.””

The name came out like a curse.

I looked at him.

“What does she have to do with this?””

He didn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

Or at least he was afraid he knew.

I kept reading.

Adrian, I tried to tell you. I tried so many times.

But every time I got close, someone stopped me.

Someone who knew how much you trusted them.

My stomach dropped.

I believe Victoria knows where Lily is.

The letter slipped from my fingers.

No one spoke.

Because some truths were too large to fit into words.

My father turned away.

His shoulders shook.

“Twenty-one years.””

His voice was barely audible.

“Twenty-one years I thought my daughter was dead.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because I was angry.

I was furious.

But I was also looking at a man who had just discovered he had lost two daughters instead of one.

“Why didn’t she tell me?”” he whispered.

I looked at him.

“Maybe she tried.””

That was the hardest part.

Because somewhere between my parents’ divorce and my mother’s death, someone had made sure their voices never reached each other.

And that person had been standing at the altar hours ago.

Wearing white.

Holding flowers.

Pretending to be innocent.

My father picked up his phone.

“What are you doing?””

“Calling Victoria.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Adrian, don’t.””

My father looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because if she knows you found this, she’ll disappear.””

The room went quiet.

“You think she would run?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“I think you don’t know what she’s capable of.””

Those words frightened me.

Because I had seen Victoria angry.

I had seen the way she grabbed my arm.

But this was different.

This was twenty years of planning.

Twenty years of lies.

My father grabbed his coat.

“We need to find her.””

I nodded.

“I’m coming.””

He looked at me.

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

I felt something inside me close.

“Why?””

“Because this is dangerous.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Dangerous?””

I looked around.

“At the moment, I’m carrying a baby you didn’t know existed, after walking into your wedding because I had nowhere else to go.””

He opened his mouth.

I continued.

“I think I’ve already been in danger.””

The words hurt him.

I saw that.

But they were true.

After a long silence, he nodded.

“Okay.””

The word surprised me.

“Okay?””

“You’re coming.””

I stared at him.

“But you stay beside me.””

I nodded.

“Fine.””

Daniel picked up his keys.

“I know where she went.””

My father turned.

“What?””

“Victoria left through the back entrance.””

“How do you know?””

Daniel looked away.

“Because I saw her.””

My father narrowed his eyes.

“When?””

“Five minutes ago.””

The room changed.

“What?””

Daniel’s face became pale.

“She wasn’t alone.””

My father stepped closer.

“Who was with her?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then answered.

“A young woman.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

My father’s expression tightened.

“But Victoria called her by a name.””

“What name?””

Daniel took a breath.

And the answer made my father drop the folder.

“Lily.””

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Because the impossible suddenly became possible.

My missing sister wasn’t just a secret.

May you like

She was alive.

And Victoria had found her before we did.
