Amused

Chapter 7: The Cousin Who Sold the Secret

The name echoed in my mind long after the call ended.

Andrew Harlow.

My cousin.

My family.

The person who sat across from me at holiday dinners.

The person who knew my grandfather’s habits, his values, his fears.

The person who knew exactly how much I trusted him.

I stared at the missing page in the ledger.

A torn edge remained where the truth had once been.

Someone had deliberately removed it.

Someone had known that one page could destroy everything.

And Andrew knew enough to warn me away from it.

That meant one thing.

He had seen it.

Maybe he had written it.

Maybe he had removed it.

Maybe he had been afraid I would find out.

I grabbed my coat.

Thomas looked up from the hallway.

“Where are you going?””

“To talk to Andrew.””

His expression changed immediately.

“Claire.””

“I need answers.””

“Are you sure you want them?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

Then I picked up my keys.

“But I need them anyway.””

Andrew was not surprised when I arrived.

That bothered me more than if he had been shocked.

He opened the door before I knocked.

Like he had been waiting.

“You found the page.””

Not hello.

Not how are you.

Just that.

I stepped inside.

“You knew.””

Andrew closed the door.

“Claire—”

“No.””

My voice was calm.

That seemed to make him more uncomfortable.

“You knew Daniel before I met him.””

He didn’t answer.

“You knew what he wanted.””

Silence.

“You knew he was using me.””

His jaw tightened.

“Not at first.””

I laughed quietly.

“Not at first?””

Andrew walked toward the kitchen.

“Do you know what it’s like to grow up knowing you’ll never be the one chosen?””

I followed him.

“Chosen for what?””

“The company.””

There it was.

The wound underneath everything.

Andrew had spent his entire life believing my grandfather’s love was a competition.

“My grandfather never promised you control.””

“No.””

He poured water into a glass.

“That was the problem.””

I stared at him.

“You hated me because he trusted me.””

Andrew looked at me.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“I understand perfectly.””

His face hardened.

“You were always the favorite.””

“That’s not true.””

“It is.””

He laughed bitterly.

“Grandpa taught you everything. Took you to meetings. Showed you the real business. He never did that with me.””

“Because you wanted power.””

“Because I wanted respect.””

“You wanted control.””

His silence was enough.

I shook my head.

“Daniel was right about one thing.””

Andrew frowned.

“What?””

“You both confuse fear with respect.””

For a moment, he looked like he wanted to argue.

Then he looked away.

“Daniel was supposed to help me.””

I froze.

“Help you?””

“Yes.””

“Explain.””

Andrew sat down.

For the first time, he looked tired.

Not powerful.

Not confident.

Just tired.

“Richard Vale approached me years ago.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“He knew I was angry.””

“Angry at what?””

“At Grandpa.””

I waited.

“He told me that the company should have been mine.””

I stared at him.

“And you believed him?””

“At first.””

The words came quietly.

“Then Daniel came along.””

I crossed my arms.

“You introduced him.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Andrew looked down.

“Because Daniel knew how to get close to you.””

The sentence felt like a slap.

“He became my friend.””

“No.””

Andrew shook his head.

“He became what you needed him to be.””

I hated how much that hurt.

Because it was true.

Daniel had not entered my life like an enemy.

He entered like an answer.

After my grandfather died, I was overwhelmed.

Everyone expected me to suddenly become someone I wasn’t.

Daniel was the person who told me I didn’t have to carry everything.

The person who held my hand.

The person who said:

“You don’t have to be a Harlow every second.””

I thought he loved Claire.

Not the inheritance.

Not the company.

Me.

“How long?””

Andrew looked confused.

“What?””

“How long did you know Daniel was manipulating me?””

He didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

My voice dropped.

“How long?””

“Before your wedding.””

The room became silent.

I felt the pain before the anger arrived.

Before my wedding.

Before I promised forever.

Before I looked into Daniel’s eyes and believed him.

“You let me marry him.””

Andrew’s eyes filled with regret.

“I thought I could stop it later.””

“Later?””

“Yes.””

“You thought you could control my life?””

“No.””

“That is exactly what you thought.””

He stood.

“Claire, listen to me.””

“No.””

“You don’t understand what Richard was planning.””

“Then tell me.””

His expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“He wasn’t trying to take Harlow Capital.””

“Then what?””

“He was trying to destroy it.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because Grandpa betrayed him.””

I frowned.

“Betrayed him?””

Andrew nodded.

“Richard believed he deserved everything.””

“And Grandpa disagreed.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Andrew looked toward the window.

“Because Richard tried to steal from him.””

The room went quiet.

Then I asked:

“And Daniel?””

Andrew swallowed.

“Daniel was the weapon.””

That night, I barely slept.

Every memory had changed.

The first time Daniel met my family.

The way he asked questions.

The way he listened when my grandfather spoke.

At the time, I thought he was interested.

Now I wondered if he was studying.

Learning.

Collecting information.

At 3:17 a.m., my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Daniel.

I almost ignored it.

Almost.

But curiosity won.

The message contained a video.

I opened it.

Daniel was sitting in a dark room.

Not his apartment.

Not his office.

Somewhere unfamiliar.

His face looked different.

No confidence.

No arrogance.

Just exhaustion.

“Claire.””

He looked directly at the camera.

“I know you hate me.””

I said nothing.

“This is not an apology.””

A pause.

“I don’t deserve one.””

The words surprised me.

Daniel continued.

“I need you to listen because I don’t have much time.””

I frowned.

What did that mean?

“Andrew told you about me.””

My stomach tightened.

“You know about Richard.””

I watched silently.

“But there’s something Andrew doesn’t know.””

Daniel looked away.

For the first time, he looked scared.

“I wasn’t the beginning.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What does that mean?””

The video continued.

“Richard found me because he needed someone close to you.””

My breath caught.

“But I found something out after I married you.””

He swallowed.

“Richard wasn’t the person in control.””

The screen froze briefly.

Then Daniel said:

“There was someone above him.””

I leaned closer.

“Who?””

Daniel looked directly at the camera.

And whispered:

“Claire, the person who planned everything…”

The video cut off.

I stared at the black screen.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice responded.

Older.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Claire Harlow.””

My heart started racing.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“My name is Margaret Harlow.””

I froze.

That name.

Impossible.

My grandfather’s wife.

My grandmother.

A woman everyone told me had died before I was born.

“No.””

The voice remained calm.

“Yes.””

I stood slowly.

“That’s impossible.””

“Your grandfather wanted you to believe I was gone.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Why?””

The woman answered:

“Because he was trying to protect you from me.””

Silence.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Claire, if you want to know why Daniel chose you…”

May you like

A pause.

“Ask yourself why your grandfather never told you the truth about your own family.””
